Baco Mercat

408 S Main St
Los Angeles, CA 90013

Bäco Mercat is the home of the “bäco,” the signature flatbread sandwich that was developed by chef Josef Centeno. The original bäco was the crispy pork belly and beef carnitas with caraway pepper. Since then, the bäco bread has taken center stage and works as a vessel for all things delicious: pork, beef, poultry, seafood and vegetables. The bäco bread is served in its original sandwich form, but we also roll it thin and bake it crispy with toppings. This inspiration is taken from the Spanish version of a pizza called “coca.” Our menu spans Western- and Eastern-Mediterranean influences, includes both small and big plates, and continually changes with the seasons. We source our poultry, pork and beef from producers who raise their animals humanely with no growth hormones or antibiotics. We love Southern California's produce, and you'll find lots of vegetable dishes on our menu, too. Our commitment is to bring you the best-quality ingredients and make them as tasty as possible. Located in the historic Old Bank district in downtown Los Angeles, Bäco Mercat is a neighborhood restaurant that also offers a focused liquor program with hand-picked spirits, beers and wines from around the world.

"Fideo and borracho beans with cilantro and pork belly simmering on the stove, the spicy warmth of menudo every Christmas and New Year’s, egg salad with a fried egg between a butter toasted bolillo, and puffy tacos stuffed with lengua carnitas and crushed avocado then doused with pequin chile-vinegar salsa. These are just some of the dishes that have inspired me – the food that I was nurtured with by the women who raised me. Bar Ama is my interpretation of their Tex-Mex." --Josef Centeno

The Continental Club
Distance: 0.2 mi Competitive Analysis
116 W 4th St
Los Angeles, CA 90013

(866) 687-4499

Established in 2013 and open February 2014, The Continental Club is a concept by Ashley Joyce with design by partners Ashley Joyce and John Lasker. The Continental Club aims to cater to the vibrant and diverse downtown LA community. The design is based on a traditional London members’ club contrasted with modern, anti-establishment accents. Though officially a single street address, The Continental Club hosts two distinct settings. Sunday through Thursday guests enter from 4th Street to the J. Parkinson Room at The Continental Club. This intimate space is named after John Parkinson, the architect responsible for many iconic downtown landmarks including City Hall, The Coliseum, Union Station and The Continental Building. The emphasis is classic cocktails and conversation. On Fridays and Saturdays, guests are greeted by a doorman in the alley, led down a stairway and through a wood-paneled hallway to enter The Continental Club. This expanded space includes semi-private seating areas surrounding a central bar and small dance floor. Unique table service includes pitchers, punch bowls and martini sets. The attention to detail and exceptional service is reminiscent of Las Vegas, London and Havana clubs of the 1950s and 1960s. The Continental Club is part of Circa93.

The Smell
Distance: 0.1 mi Competitive Analysis
247 S Main St
Los Angeles, CA 90012

(213) 625-4325

The Smell is an all-ages, alcohol and drug-free, punk rock/noise/experimental venue in Downtown Los Angeles, California. The Smell, notable for its DIY ethic, is home to many of the area's avant-garde performers and artists. The venue is maintained by Jim Smith, one of the four original organizers of the club, and a number of volunteers. The Smell continues in the tradition of Los-Angeles-based underground clubs such as The Masque and Jabberjaw. Aside from its primary function as a live music and performance art space, The Smell hosts a library, a vegan snack bar and a gallery space. The venue predates the conception of the Gallery Row district in which it is located. The Smell and the relatively new Gallery Row both border Skid Row.HistoryThe Smell was founded by Ara Shirinyan, Jarrett Silberman, and Jim Smith as one of the few all-ages art/performance spaces in Los Angeles, after the demise of two local venues, Jabberjaw and the Impala Cafe, during the same week in late 1997. The Smell opened just a short time later, on January 8, 1998. It was originally located by the intersection of Magnolia and Lankershim in North Hollywood, but when the cost of rent rose during the NoHo Arts District boom in 1999, the venue relocated to cheaper Downtown Los Angeles. Shirinyan gave up his ownership before the venue's move, so Silberman, Smith, and Mac Mann constructed the new space.

We are a Bottleshop & Bar. Curated Unique Natural We sell & serve curated wine & craft beer and hold weekly events to celebrate them at our BAR! 16 Taps of Curated beer & 40 wines by the glass at the Bar & you can buy any bottle in the store & drink it in the Bar ! Beer & Wine bottles at the shop are curated. This can, occasionally, mean that selections can range a bit toward the offbeat, straying occasionally into the realm of the intentionally obscure – but frankly, simply selling things is boring; unless one cares about what they are. So we might not always have the precise bottle of Chateau Koala at the same price that Wines R Us had advertised, but we will almost always have a tastily pleasing version of something that you imagined at the proper cost.
