In 2001, the University of Connecticut designated human rights as a university priority. This was the culmination of a flourishing of human rights activities at the University in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Thomas J. Dodd Research Center was founded in 1995, housing the Nuremberg archives of former Nuremberg Executive Counsel and Connecticut Senator, Thomas J. Dodd. Since 2000, the University has hosted the Marsha Lilien Gladstein Visiting Professor of Human Rights that brings leading human rights scholars to the University campus to teach and give a public lecture on central developments in the field. The Human Rights Institute was founded in 2003 by the Gladstein Professor of Human Rights, Richard A. Wilson in order to promote interdisciplinary research and teaching across the University. Since then nine joint faculty have been hired at the Institute to build the research profile of the Institute and to contribute to the growing undergraduate major and minor, and graduate certificate in human rights. In 2001, a human rights minor was established at the University and currently enrolls approximately 40 minors, making it one of the largest human rights minors in the country. On the basis of the success of the human rights minor, a human rights major was launched in 2012. The human rights undergraduate major now has over 50 students earning degrees in human rights and participating in internships across New England. The Institute has one of the largest human rights majors in the country.
The Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary Jewish Life was established in 1979 with the support of philanthropists Doris and Simon Konover. In 2013, Professor Jeffrey Shoulson succeeded the Center’s founding Director, Arnold Dashefsky, as Director and Konover Chair of Judaic Studies, a position made possible through the generous $1.5-million endowment from the Konover Foundation. The Center seeks to promote the academic and scholarly study of Jewish history, culture, and civilization in recognition of the need to bring that study to a general audience. Center activities are open to all persons, regardless of religious or ethnic background. The Center actively works with many departments, centers, programs, and institutes across the university on instructional, research, and programming initiatives in areas of shared interest. Faculty affiliated with the Center also have formal working relationships with several institutions of higher learning in Israel, including the University of Haifa, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the University of Tel Aviv.
Researchers at the Music Dynamics Laboratory are working to uncover the general principles of neural dynamics that underlie music perception and cognition. We are investigating the neural processes underlying pitch, rhythm and tonality, as well as the perception of song and the experience of emotion in music. Music is a high-level cognitive capacity, a form of communication that relies on highly structured temporal sequences comparable in complexity to language. Music is found among all human cultures, and musical ‘languages’ vary across cultures with learning. Unlike language, however, music rarely refers to the external world. It consists of self contained patterns of sound, and certain aspects these patterns are found universally among musical cultures. Our research is uncovering fundamental mechanisms of hearing, communication, and auditory system development. We are identifying innate constraints that shape musical communication, with potentially important implications for language learning. Our research has implications for understanding a wide range of hearing and communication disorders, and it has applicability to improving the design of neural prostheses, enhancing the perception of music and other sounds in cochlear implant patients.
