Kismet is a duo of dreamers doing all the things their favorite forerunners imbued in them. Sonia, for instance, worked at a Recycling Center where she learned to utilize materials donated from the community to use toward creative play, engaging whole families or one child at a time. More impressively, Sonia has worked at Art City in City Museum for 11 years. She celebrated her 11th year July 2 of 2014. Tom, on the other hand, was inspired by a shop in Omaha, NE Called the Antiquarium that sold records, books and art and provided a safe place for locals to hang out, drink coffee, read books, play chess, and philosophize. Later on in life, inspired by said cultural center, Tom moved to Durango, Colorado where he opened his own record store / art gallery / venue which lasted 4 years. A large part of Tom’s music collection comes from this endeavor. Following Durango, Tom moved to Denver where he worked at one of the finest record stores in the country for 2 more years.

Bread and Roses Birth Services

The phrase ‘bread and roses’ comes from a 1912 textile strike in which Rose Schneiderman said “The worker must have bread, but she must have roses, too.” This phrase has been used for over a century by feminists and activists, meaning that we want our sustenance but we also want beauty and we want both without compromise. Midwifery is the fight for autonomy over normal life processes, specifically during the childbearing years. The universal midwifery tradition is to build practices based on reciprocity, continuity of care, consent, and support. Midwives work to maintain natural life cycles through community-based knowledge and love. We labor for access to safer options and better outcomes with self determination over our own bodies and communities. We take a holistic view of family through a social context, and work to create open and dynamic spaces and roles for ourselves and each other. This must include continuing education, expertise in counseling, and playing supportive roles during normal, healthy, and safe childbirth experiences. This is the struggle of midwifery. “Yes, it is bread we fight for, but we fight for roses too.”

In a search for new methods to ‘read the city’, Bauer focuses on the idea of ‘public space’ and more specifically on spaces where anyone can do anything at any given moment: the non-private space, the non-privately owned space, space that is economically uninteresting. His photos are often about contact with architecture and basic living elements. Energy (heat, light, water), space and landscape are examined in less obvious ways and sometimes developed in absurd ways. By exploring the concept of landscape in a nostalgic way, he investigates the dynamics of landscape, including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on our assumptions of what landscape means to us. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination. His works establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. These works focus on concrete questions that determine our existence. By taking daily life as subject matter while commenting on the everyday aesthetic of middle class values, he often creates work using creative game tactics, but these are never permissive. Play is a serious matter: during the game, different rules apply than in everyday life and even everyday objects undergo transubstantiation. His works are characterised by the use of everyday objects in an atmosphere of middleclass mentality in which recognition plays an important role. Chris Bauer currently lives and works in Chicago And St. Louis. (Pulled from Facebook conversation – Alex Rauch 2013)
