In June of 1997, we pulled the first loaves of bread out of our newly installed hearthstone oven in a small, converted storefront in the Cass Corridor of Detroit: Avalon International Breads was born. When Avalon began, our greatest aspiration was to become an inspiration to others. Now, our customers, our employees and the community are inspiring us as we find new ways of fulfilling Avalon’s mission: Eat Well. Do Good. Avalon has grown as the Hearth and Soul of Detroit into a new production facility, the Avalon Bakehouse on Bellevue in Detroit. Germack Coffee Roasting Co. is a division of Germack Pistachio Co. Owned by the Germack Family, the Germacks have been roasting specialty foods in Detroit's historic Eastern Market since 1924. Germack Pistachio Co. is the oldest importer of pistachios in the US. GERMACK roasts in-house, and offers a full line of nuts, dried fruit, chocolates, and candies at retail and wholesale. In 2012, Germack Coffee Roasting Co. was established to roast specialty coffees for retail and wholesale buyers, and to operate an Eastern Market cafe offering coffee and tea by-the-cup.
Mootown Ice Cream & Dessert Shoppe, founded by sisters Chris & Kim Kelley, dreamed of owning their own business in Detroit, specifically Detroit Eastern Market. After many discussions and heated debates on what type of business; they determined something important was missing… ice cream so they opened the first ice cream shop ever in Eastern Market district. Mootown opened on May 13, 201! Adamant about supporting and serving a local made ice cream; we pursed an extensive and serious search to find what we believe is the best Michigan made ice cream; Hudsonville Ice Cream! A genuine partnership began. Hudsonville has been making ice cream in Michigan since 1926. Our coffee partner is AJ O’Neil Chief Bean Officer for Detroit Bold. AJ, believes that Detroit’s economy should be supported by more than just the auto industry. Being primarily furnished by Haworth and Haworth Collection products, our 2500sf space offers 11 different work-zones from a single person lounge, to a 40 person conference space. For the ‘heads-down-flying-solo’ type to the, ‘more brains are better than one’ types, the STUDIO is designed to accommodate the variety of work styles present in today’s work place. OUR TRAINING/CONFERENCE SPACE This space is good for meetings of 20 up to 40 (dependent on layout), and can be reserved in 1 hour increments and all day if needed. The room is quite private from the rest of the STUDIO, and comes equipped with conference seating, powered tables, a 75” wall mounted monitor, and an AV/Sound system that is separate from the rest of the STUDIO. 1001 Woodward is an office building in Downtown Detroit, Michigan. It replaced the Majestic Building, a 14-story high rise on the same site. The building is located just south of the neighboring David Stott Building, at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Michigan Avenue overlooking Campus Martius Park. Constructed from 1963 to 1965, the 25-story building is designed in the International Style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.HistoryThe building occupies the site of the Majestic Building, which was demolished in 1962 to make way for 1001 Woodward. It was constructed between 1963 and 1965 to house headquarters for First Federal Savings and Loan of Detroit, and was known as the First Federal Building. By January 1998, the Savings and Loan was part of Charter One Financial and the parent company sought to sell the structure and lease a portion back. In December of that year, it was purchased by a partnership of The Carpenters Pension Trust Fund-Detroit & Vicinity and the Operating Engineers Local 324 Pension Fund for $6.5 million. As part of the sale, Charter One leased the ground floor, two office floors and the basement. The Michigan Court of Appeals occupied two floors under a lease which ended in 2001. The court relocated to Cadillac Place with several other State of Michigan offices.
