The Center for Wearable Electronic Sensing Systems and Technology addresses critical issues in three broad areas: namely, medical applications with an initial focus on early stage prognostics of cardiorespiratory and sleep disorders, monitoring of safety and security in at-risk operations, such as firefighting, mining and nuclear power plant operations, handling of hazardous materials, and maintaining security, and finally, wellness and recreational applications, including sports, human performance, monitoring the aging population in terms of position and fall detection, rehabilitation, metabolism and activity monitoring of obese populations, and aesthetic applications. Three driving forces motivated the pursuit of the Center for Wearable Electronic Sensing Systems and Technology. (1) Developing fundamental science toward the goal of providing affordable and accessible healthcare and disease prevention: (2) OSU is uniquely positioned to develop CWeSST due to faculty expertise in areas such as engineering, health science, biomechanics, and human science. (3) Wearable electronics is a growing domain in higher education and in industry: “The market for smart fabrics was valued at €188.15 million in 2011 and the CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) during 2016-21 is forecast to be ~ 30%.” (http://www.smithersapex.com).
