The Ukrainian National Museum is one of the largest Ukrainian museums in the United States and boasts a unique collection of Ukrainian art, writings, icons, and other innumerable artifacts that range from the Cossack Era to modern times. The Ukrainian National Museum has become a globally unrivaled hub for the preservation, study, and promotion of Ukrainian culture and welcomes visitors to discover the vibrancy of Ukraine and its people. Permanent exhibits include: Folk art- This exhibit focuses on the art generated in each of Ukraine’s regions and displays carvings, metal works, leather products, ceramics, embroidery, and pysanky among other original Ukrainian folk artifacts. Pysanky- Discover the miracle of pysanky! This decorated Easter egg is a symbol of the Ukrainian heritage and is artfully crafted in all regions of Ukraine and by the diaspora. Different colors, patterns, styles, and manners of execution keep each region’s pysanky unique and identifiable. Cossack Era- Visitors have the exciting opportunity to see the curiosities of seventeenth and eighteenth centuries on display. Rare stamps, ornamental jewelry, and Cossack weapons adorn the exhibit. World War I- Dedicated to the First World War, this exhibit showcases documents, weapons, uniforms, and personal artifacts recovered upon its end. Genocide/Holodomor- The museum is proud to shed light on the Russian-headed genocide of the Ukrainian people that occurred between 132 and 1933. This genocide committed by Stalin’s regime led to the murder of 10 million Ukrainians and is acknowledged solemnly in the exhibit.. Перша світова війна Наративно-наочна виставка, присвячується Першій світовій війні, відомій також як Велика Війна, що відбувалася між двома могутніми військово-політичними блоками – Антантою (Франція, Росія, Великобританія) та Троїстим союзом (Німеччина, Австро-Угорщина, Італія) і тривала з 28 липня 1914 року до 11 листопада 1918 року. The North Avenue Bridge can refer to one of three bridges that has carried North Avenue (Illinois Route 64) over the North Branch of the Chicago River on the north side of Chicago, Illinois. A center-pier swing bridge built in 1877 was replaced in 1907 by a bascule bridge, allowing river traffic more room for maneuvering in and out of the North Canal, just north of Goose Island.Due to deteriorating conditions and undercapacity, the bascule bridge was torn down in 2006 to make room for a hybrid suspension/cable-stayed bridge. The suspension/cable-stayed bridge fully opened on May 23, 2008.HistoryAs Chicago grew into a center of industry and commerce in the late 19th century, numerous fixed-span crossings were replaced by center-pier swing bridges, the most common type of bridge that allowed pedestrians and wagons to cross the Chicago River while also periodically allowing ship traffic below. In 1877, one of these bridges was constructed just north of Goose Island.Development of the bascule bridgeThe 1877 bridge and its counterparts, while the most common bridge of the mid-19th century, were criticized by both the shipping and real estate industries of Chicago. As the 19th century came to a close, shipping vessels had grown larger, and the swing bridges' center piers had become navigational hazards. In addition, each swing span required a large clearance around the bridge, preventing the development of docking facilities near the bridge. As open land along the Chicago River grew scarce, real estate and shipping companies grew increasingly critical of the swing spans.
