The Grocery is a project-oriented creative space owned and operated by Janet Galore and Demi Raven in North Beacon Hill, Seattle. We are currently renovating the building, and will have studio space, a residency, and project-based exhibitions in the future. The building was built in 1929, owned by Sam and Mary Ulovitch, who ran a grocery store there until 1943. In 1955, the store was listed as Three Thousand and One Grocery. Masaru Nomura purchased the building in November of 1956, and from 1961 through 1965, the building was known as Fred’s Grocery. The building has also served as a restaurant supply, and an outreach ministry from 1998-2005.

We make substantial art work about necessary subject matter ... the crimes we are conscripted into from birth, the crimes against ourselves and each other we participate in for the duration of our lives. We dive into the pools inside you... Your refusal to look inward does not relieve you from being a murderer. And you are. You exploit and you murder, and you accept it. If nothing else, at least we know we will have seen you for what you are ... and struggled to discover why we love you ... in any case ... someone will have seen you. Lost Dance Project creates iconographic art pieces. It is our ambition to maintain an unsurpassed level of quality, originality and intelligence in our work. We produce fine art painting, photography, performance art pieces, installations, written works, dance works. We encourage you to support working artists and purchase an artwork from an artist you like. We cordially invite you to make an appointment to visit the studio -- contact us at [email protected] or 206 383 4105.

Melissa Painter is an Artist of Photography and Mixed Media. Armed with a macro lens and a penchant for really being in her work she is often found consumed by all things flora and fauna and covered with fiber, sand, glass, pigment and the occasional rusted razor blade. She hails from the Valle of the Cross in the Appalachian mountains, hands deep in the soil breathing soft mossy air and believing all the best things in life are to be felt deeply in every possible way. She was schooled formally at the Evergreen State College (BA in Art Therapy) and informally by folk art legend Irmaly Braken. When Melissa is not pursuing her other passion as an Intuitive Advisor/ Tarot Reader, she can be found most evenings mixing it up at the Lux Divinorum Designs Studio in the Inscape Arts building, Seattle Washington.
