The Chicago Water Tower is a contributing property in the Old Chicago Water Tower District landmark district. It is located at 806 North Michigan Avenue along the Magnificent Mile shopping district in the Near North Side community area of Chicago, Illinois in a small park, the Jane M. Byrne Plaza. The tower was constructed to house a large water pump, intended to draw water from Lake Michigan. It is the second-oldest water tower in the United States, after the Louisville Water Tower in Louisville, Kentucky. The Chicago Water Tower now serves as a Chicago Office of Tourism art gallery known as the City Gallery in the Historic Water Tower. It features the work of local photographers and artists.HistoryThe tower, built in 1869 by architect William W. Boyington from yellowing Joliet limestone, is 154 feet (47 m) tall. Inside was a 138-foot (42 m) high standpipe to hold water. In addition to being used for firefighting, the pressure in the pipe could be regulated to control water surges in the area. Together with the adjacent Chicago Avenue Pumping Station, it drew clean water from water cribs in Lake Michigan.

The Civic Opera Building is a 45-story office tower located at 20 North Wacker Drive in Chicago. The building opened November 4, 1929, and has an Art Deco interior. It contains a 3,563-seat opera house, the Civic Opera House, which is the second-largest opera auditorium in North America. Today, the opera house is the permanent home of the Lyric Opera of Chicago.Samuel Insull envisioned and hired the design team for building a new opera house to serve as the home for the Chicago Civic Opera, as the company was called. The building has been seen as being shaped like a huge chair and is sometimes referred to as "Insull's Throne." Insull selected the architecture firm Graham, Anderson, Probst & White who were responsible for several other buildings in the downtown Chicago Loop. As they did on other occasions, the architects commissioned Henry Hering to produce architectural sculpture for the building.Prior to the opening of the building on July 15, 1929, the opera's inaugural season took place.During the 1950s and 1960s the building was identified by a large "Kemper Insurance" sign, although it was not that company's headquarters. In 1993, the Lyric Opera of Chicago purchased the opera house it had rented for 64 years. In 2012, Tishman Speyer Properties L.P. sold the 915,000sqft office tower portion of the building for $125.8 million to an affiliate of Nanuet, N.Y.-based Berkley Properties LLC.

Museum of Broadcast Communications

Chicago, IL 60602

The Museum of Broadcast Communications is an American museum, the stated mission of which is "to collect, preserve, and present historic and contemporary radio and television content as well as educate, inform and entertain through our archives, public programs, screenings, exhibits, publications and online access to our resources." It is located in Chicago, Illinois. The museum's locations (1987–present)The Museum of Broadcast Communications first opened in June 1987 in the River City condominium complex, located at 800 S. Wells St. It remained there until June 1992, when it moved to the Chicago Cultural Center. The MBC then left the Cultural Center in December 2003, with plans to open in a new building of its own at 360 N. State St. in 2005. Subsequently, construction of the new MBC experienced various delays and setbacks, with construction stopping in 2006 and the half-completed building slated to be sold in December 2008, which MBC founder and president Bruce DuMont blamed on a lack of $6 million in state funding that had reportedly been promised to the museum three years earlier. On November 7, 2009, DuMont announced that funding for the museum from the state of Illinois had finally been obtained and that construction would begin once again. Seven months later, Governor Pat Quinn stated that Illinois would give the MBC a capital grant of $6 million to help complete its construction. (In December 2009 the MBC held a construction fundraiser in Oak Park, Illinois, where DuMont was living at the time. The event's headliner was Bill Jackson, the creator and host of the children's program The BJ and Dirty Dragon Show, which aired on Chicago TV from 1968 to '74, originally as Cartoon Town.)

Principle -what an interesting word! In life, there are many meanings for the word principle. In the floral world, principles are the guidelines for creating visually attractive floral compositions. Here at Flora Elements, the definition of principles is a set of rules that you may bend to your liking after you have understood and mastered them all, listened to your heart, let your fingertips feel all the textures, and allowed your eyes to be focused and balanced and opened the portal to envisioning a work of art when you see buckets of flowers. Simple, right? For many people, floral design comes naturally, while others must learn step by step and repeat those steps many times. If people all learn by using the same book, why are there are so many variations of floral design? As children, people are encouraged to be an individual, express themselves, and let the world know they are not cookie cutter versions of anyone else. This encouragement is especially prominent in the world of art. So, why should floral design be any different? Floral design is art after all! Principles and elements of design are put into place to offer a guideline that if people decide to go to competitions, they are all judged by the same standards. If people choose to play outside the box and abolish all the rules what does society say about them? Exactly! Each person is an individual, one of a kind, unique. How does a person succeed in this world with the labels that are put on them? I, Lisa Belisle, the proprietor of Flora Elements, strongly believe that a solid foundation of knowledge and skills is crucial before an individual can stretch, bend, or break the rules and remove the limitations that limit him/her. Principles and Elements provide florists with the knowledge of floral design mechanics. For example, when a person looks at a large floral structure, he/she may wonder how the designer put that together. The viewer may form a positive or negative opinion of the structure based on learned floral design principles. The viewer will evaluate the tools and supplies and their effectiveness by looking at things like foam, containers, tape, wire, and other materials that were used to make the floral structure under inspection. A beginning student must understand the principles, tips, and tricks to avoid flowers dying quickly, damage being done during delivery and set up, and to prevent the consumer from making a snap judgment that the floral product created is not worth the quoted price. In every Flora Elements class or workshop, the principles of floral design are stressed in a very gentle way so that each student learns properly from the start. The production techniques that are used are always evolving so if there is a new and better way, we will present that technique along with the traditional way.
