Cosumnes River College is a two-year community college located on the southern edge of Sacramento in Sacramento County, California. It opened in 1970, taking its name from the Cosumnes River which flows just a few miles to the south. Current enrollment is 13,500 students at its main campus. Folsom Lake College, a former satellite campus, attained independence in 2004.HistoryThe concept for Cosumnes River College was included in a Master Facility Need Study that was approved by the Board of Trustees of the Los Rios Community College District in February 1967. A campus site of 180acre was obtained and construction proceeded on a library building, a science building, an automotive and technology complex, a women's physical education building, and a swimming pool. In the fall of 1970 the college opened with an initial enrollment of about 2,100.The architect who designed the original buildings of the college is Nacht & Lewis Architects of Sacramento. They also designed the Learning Resource Center in 2005.In September 1975, the Business/Social Science building was dedicated, which included computer laboratories. In the spring of 1989, the California state finals for the National Geography Bee were first held within the recital hall. They have been held there in April ever since. In fall of 1990, the cafeteria building was opened, with facilities for both staff and student dining, and also for the instructional food service program. The next phase of construction was in the summer of 1991, which added the College Center building with space for the Admissions/Records, Financial Aid, Business Services, Administration and the book store. In fall of 1995 a visual and performing arts complex was opened, completing the roster of facilities in the college's original plan.

When the environment meets all of the needs of children they become, without any manipulation by the adult, physically healthy, mentally and psychologically fulfilled, extremely well-educated, and brimming over with joy and kindness towards each other. They develop such excellent study habits that they far surpass the level of the curriculum of traditional schools. Why Montessori? It works! That individual attention, praise, and repetition is worth its weight in gold. Children are grouped in mixed ages and abilities in three to six year spans. There is constant interaction, problem solving, child to child teaching, and socialization. There is no limit to how long a child can work with a piece of material. Rather than lecturing to large or small groups of children, the teacher is trained to teach one child at a time, and to oversee 30 or more children (with one non-teaching assistant) working on a broad array of tasks. The teacher is fluent in her teaching of the basic lessons of math, language, the arts and sciences, and in guiding a child’s research and exploration, capitalizing on his interest in and excitement about a subject. The teacher does not dictate what to study or read, nor does she set a limit as to how far a child follows an interest. The teacher is trained to recognize a child’s readiness according to age, ability, and interest in a specific lesson, and is prepared to guide individual progress. A child can work on any material he/she understands. This is possible because the children stay in the same group for three or more years and much of the teaching comes from the children and the environment.

AVID is an upper elementary through high school system that prepares students least served in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility. They are typically students who are first-time college-goers in their families, low-income and are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. The AVID methodologies are implemented not just in the AVID elective class but also in academic subject areas school wide. AVID students are enrolled in a school’s toughest classes, such as honors and Advanced Placement, and attend an academic elective class-called AVID-taught within the school day by a trained AVID teacher. A well-developed AVID system increases school wide advanced-level course enrollment, and the number of students attending college. The AVID Elective is currently implemented in approximately 1,406 schools in California.
