Penn Presbyterian Medical Center is a hospital located in the University City section of West Philadelphia. It was founded by Reverend Ephraim D. Saunders in 1871 and formally joined the University of Pennsylvania Health System in 1995. It is located between Market Street and Powelton Avenue, and N. 38th Street and N. Sloan Street.HistoryPresbyterian was founded in 1871 by the Alliance of Philadelphia Presbyteries as a 45-bed facility on. The Reverend Dr. Ephraim D. Saunders, a Presbyterian minister, dedicated the land in memory of his son Courtland, who was shot and killed in service on September 21, 1862, in a battle during the Civil War. Reverend Saunders said at the dedication, "A few days before the battle of Antietam... he passed with me from his tent in the forest... In view of the perils of war... he recommended that in the case of his death... the property should all be donated to some prominent... charity." The incorporators declared the purpose was "to provide medical and surgical aid and nursing for the sick and disabled..." Care and nursing was granted to the indigent of Philadelphia, funded by donations from individuals and Presbyterian churches, to fulfill its Christian mission. This commitment was renewed in 1952, when the trustees of the Hospital voted against moving to the more affluent suburbs, choosing to remain in West Philadelphia. The original name was "Presbyterian Hospital of Philadelphia." It has since grown into a 300-bed institution on with various nationally recognized medical institutes, specialty centers and research programs.Presbyterian's School of Nursing, founded in 1887, has a long history of imbuing the medical center with an increased awareness and importance placed on the value on nursing in the treatment of patients. As a result, nurses at Presbyterian are recognized by the medical center for improving the quality of care it strives to provide.

For more than a century, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center has provided outstanding health care services. It has grown tremendously over the years, and today Penn Presbyterian ranks as one of the region's premier medical facilities, combining state-of-the-art technology with personalized care from outstanding physicians and staff. Penn Presbyterian has an outstanding track record of medical accomplishments — such as creating one of the first coronary care units in the country — and it continues to provide leading-edge care as part of Penn Medicine. Several of Penn's premier medical programs — including cardiology, family medicine, internal medicine, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, psychiatry, radiology and imaging, and surgery — are located on Penn Presbyterian's campus. In recent years, Penn Presbyterian has become a regional leader in performing minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery. Because hospitalization can be stressful, the staff at Penn Presbyterian is concerned about patient comfort and peace of mind. Most hospital rooms are private, and the patient care team understands the importance of being attentive to patient and family needs and of keeping them informed about their medical care. The connection between Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is close and strong. Many Penn Medicine specialists treat patients at both of these respected institutions, offering added convenience and reassurance for patients.

Philly Fish Fry

Philly Fish Fry! Philly Fish Fry is a monthly social swing dance at the University of Pennsylvania hosted by West Philly Swingers in collaboration with the larger Swing Dance Community of Greater Philadelphia. We also have Lindybombs (outdoor swing dancing parties!) the day before the Fish Fry. We have free (with admission) novice lessons from 8 to 9 PM and an all-levels social dance from 9 to midnight. Who can come? Anyone and everyone who is interested in learning to swing dance or would just like to enjoy the music is welcome to attend. You need not bring a partner, and need not be affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania. Penn ID NOT required. All classes are designed for the beginner- if you can walk, we can teach you to dance. Why is it called the Fish Fry? The inspiration for holding a Philly Fish Fry comes from the song of the same name by one of the greatest swing artists of all time, Louis Jordan. Fish Fries were popular during the Depression Era, when people all over the country would fish all week, put the fish in an ice box, and then take them to a public park for a fish fry. The fish fry was always held on Saturday nights during the Depression and sandwiches would cost a mere 25 cents! If you read the lyrics of Saturday Night Fish Fry, you'll notice these events were as much a dance jam session and party as a means to make a few dollars. You won't find any fish on our Fish Fries, but you will find the festive nature of these events: plenty of dancing, fabulous music, and you don't have to be a "cook, or a waiter, or a good musician" to get in free!
