The Historic Downtown Farmers Market was established July 8, 2012, to meet the demand of a high volume of residents who have a low volume of healthy produce and grocery options. We have a unique community in Downtown LA, now home to over 50,000 residents and rapidly growing. Particularly in the Historic Core, we have the highest concentration which represents: seniors, students, those on a fixed income, professionals, artists, musicians, actors, and entertainment industry types. We wanted a market to expand and reflect our incredibly diverse community. We were one of the first to offer EBT. We support our local retail with opportunities to pop up at the market. We are always looking for new ways to satisfy the neighborhood’s needs. We need you! It is important to remember that this is a new market, which depends on the support of its community to thrive and survive. We appreciate your love and support as we rotate and experiment with our growers and farmers who may come and go as we build momentum in the market. Our commitment to you is as long as you keep coming. We will do our very best to hear your feedback, respond, and push to make the market bigger and better! If just 500 people come and spend $20 per week, this is an excellent beginning.

After attending École Supérieure de Cuisine Française in Paris and years of traveling and immersing herself in the cultures of Japan, France and the United States, Kei Okumura founded Sugarbird Sweets in 2008. Many years later, Sugarbird has a Franco-Japanese essence which defines Kei's simple yet stylish confectionaries and pays tribute to her travels and culinary adventures. Exotic spices, seasonal fruits, teas and surprising textures find their way into Kei's confections and baked goods in a way that sets apart Sugarbird from the rest.
