Welcome to prospective students, current students, and alumnae!!!! The Department has undergone some notable changes in the past decade. We added the International Development Ph.D. program in 2004, and last year the undergraduate economics program left the College of Business and became part of the department. Today, as a result, we offer undergraduate degrees in political science, paralegal studies, economics, and American studies. We offer a masters of science in international development, a masters of arts in political science, and a Ph.D. in international development. The department offers minors in political science, American studies, economics, legal studies, human rights, and campaigns and elections. The department also offers undergraduate scholarships in political science, pre-law, paralegal studies, and American studies. These are awarded on an annual basis, with the application process taking place in the spring for the next academic school year. As well, we offer one multi-year scholarship, the Evelyn Gandy Award, to a student who is beginning his or her junior year. Unlike our other scholarships, this award is a full presidential level scholarship and is awarded for two years (it will be next awarded for the 2013/2014 academic year). The department is also home to a number of student organizations: Pi Sigma Alpha (the political science honor society); the Paralegal Society; the Southern Miss Political Society (open to anyone with an interest in politics); the Pre-Law Society and the Future Black Law Students Association (both of which are open to any student interested in attending law school). Faculty members include nine political scientists, four economists, two lawyers (paralegal faculty), and one geographer. Faculty research and teaching interests include religion and politics; media and popular political culture; race theory; human rights and protest movements; economics in the Middle East; the economics of health, technology, development, and sovereignty among others. All full time faculty have advanced degrees from a wide spectrum of universities including University of Florida, University of Michigan, University of Georgia, University of Utah, Southern Illinois, Old Dominion, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and University of Alabama.

Political Science Political Science is the traditional academic discipline for those interested in government, government service, politics, or the law. In our department many students consider themselves pre-law, others plan a career in politics or government, and some just like to talk about politics. We emphasize writing in all of our classes, as well as discussion, and many of us have an interest in what might be called the popular manifestations of politics-how politics is portrayed in music, film, literature, and television since we think it is important for citizens living in a mass society to recognize the political influences that surround them. Political science at Southern Miss has faculty from the Universities of Michigan, Florida, North Carolina, and Utah. We have a young and energetic faculty who will challenge you to think about politics and the political system while helping you develop skills that will be useful for you in a variety of settings. We teach courses across the breadth of the discipline, (law, theory, methods, public administration, international relations, comparative government and American politics) and many of us infuse our course materials with internet materials, film, television programming, and music. The department sponsors several student organizations including two pre-law societies, a political honor organization (Pi Sigma Alpha), and a politics discussion group (the Southern Miss Political Society). Finally the department has a number of small scholarships that we award annually. Because political science is a liberal arts major, which educates rather than trains, our students find employment in a variety of places. USM political science graduates have gone to law school, graduate school, joined the Peace Corps, taken jobs in politics, government, and in the private sector.

Economics Will today’s budget deficit impoverish tomorrow’s taxpayers? Do illegal immigrants take jobs away from native workers? Does free trade decrease our standard of living? What can be done to improve the US economy after the great recession of 2007-2009? Why is Africa still so poor but India is becoming so much richer? Economics is the social science that helps answer all of these questions. Economics is the social science that explores the concept of choice—how people choose to allocate scarce resources: time, money and effort. By understanding the science of choice, economics holds powerful implications for the fields of policy, medicine and law. With its origin as a social philosophy, economics is closely related to the fields of sociology, political science, and anthropology. However, modern economics is distinguished by its use of analytical models and sophisticated statistical techniques to create a modern field with applications in business, government and society. Students deciding to major in economics at Southern Miss can choose between the social science track and the mathematics track. Students in both tracks take a variety of courses from money and banking to international trade; from development economics to microeconomic theory; from econometrics to economic history. These topics are seen in their practical application in the capstone seminar where the students answer their own inquiry using the science of choice.
