Los Angeles, CA 90013

L.A. Dance Project is an artist collective founded in 2012 by renowned choreographer and dancer Benjamin Millepied, along with composer Nico Muhly, art consultant Matthieu Humery, Founding Producer Charles Fabius and Nicholas Britell. L.A. Dance Project’s mission is to create new work and to revive seminal collaborations from influential dance makers. Programs include full-length evenings in traditional theater venues as well as various modular performances in non-traditional environments. New works by the company endeavor to be multidisciplinary collaborations with various artists: visual artists, musicians, designers, directors and composers. L.A. Dance Project promotes the work of emerging and established creators, contributing to new platforms for contemporary dance. L.A. Dance Project’s inaugural performance, commissioned by The Music Center was held at Walt Disney Concert Hall on September 22, 2012. The company’s most recent premiere of the new work Reflections by Benjamin Millepied took place at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on April 23, 2013. In addition to the time it spends at its home base in Los Angeles, L.A. Dance Project will continue to tour at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam, Istanbul, Spoleto Festival in Italy, Edinburgh International Festival, La Maison de la Danse in Lyon, France and Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London. Renae Williams Niles, Director of Programming for the Music Center, says, "We are extremely honored to be able to further our commitment to supporting new exploration with esteemed artists by working with Benjamin on his first Los Angeles based project. He has established himself as one of the world's most commissioned choreographers and for him to make a commitment of creating new work right here bringing together local and internationally renowned artists was worthy of support. For the Music Center to play this significant national and international role allows us to achieve our goals of leadership in a phenomenally influential way." Born in Bordeaux France, Benjamin Millepied began his dance training at the age of eight with his mother Catherine, a former modern dancer. From age thirteen to sixteen, he attended the Conservatoire National de Lyon. In the summer of 1992, Millepied made his first appearance in New York City, for a summer program at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet. The following year, he became a full-time student at the school, having received the "Bourse Lavoisier," a scholarship award from the French Ministry of Culture. In the 1994 at the School of American Ballet Spring Workshop, Millepied originated a principal role in Jerome Robbins' "2 & 3 Part Inventions" set to music by J.S Bach. That same year, he was awarded the "Prix de Lausanne." In his last year at SAB, Millepied received the Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise and was invited to become a member of New York City Ballet. In the spring of 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Principal Dancer. In addition to dancing, Millepied has also choreographed ballets for numerous companies around the world, including three works for NYCB - "Quasi Una Fantasia" (2009), "Why am I not where you are?" (2010), and "Plainspoken" (2010). For NYCB's 2012 Spring Season, Millepied will create a world premiere ballet to a commissioned score by Nico Muhly, a frequent collaborator, which will premiere at the Company's Spring Gala performance on May 10, 2012. During his career at NYCB, Millepied has originated roles in ballets choreographed by Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, Helgi Tomasson, Mauro Bigonzetti, Boris Eifman, and Angelin Preljocaj, among others. He has also danced featured roles in numerous ballets including Balanchine's "Agon," "A Midsummer Night's Dream"(Oberon), "Rubies" from "Jewels," and "Symphony in C," Robbins' "Dances at a Gathering," "Dybbuk," "Fancy Free," and "West Side Story Suite" and Martins' "Fearful Symmetries," "Jeu de Cartes," and "Swan Lake." In addition to the three ballets created for NYCB, Millepied has also choreographed works for American Ballet Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Danses Concertantes, The Mariinsky, Het Nationale Ballet, Grande Theatre de Geneve, and Ballet de Genève, among others. He has also collaborated with a range of composers including Philip Glass, Nico Muhly, David Lang, Daniel Ott, and Thierry Escaich, as well as designers such as Rodarte, Paul Cox, Marc Jacobs and Santiago Calatrava. In addition, in 2010, Millepied choreographed and appeared in Darren Aronofsky's feature film "Black Swan." Millepied also directed the Morriss Center Dance Workshop in Bridgehampton, New York in 2004 and 2005. From 2006 to 2007, he was choreographer-in-residence at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, and in 2007 he received the United States Artists Wynn Fellowship. In 2010, he was made Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture. Millepied recently retired from New York City Ballet to concentrate on his choreography. In 2010 Millepied directed his first short film with actress Lea Seydoux and score by Angelo Badalamenti. Recently, he directed 5 short films set to Philip Glass new violin partitas. 2A Gallery Address: 400 S Main St #2A Contact: Calvin Phelps Email: [email protected] Website: www.2AGallery.com Phone: 213.924.3472 How is the project operated? This is an independent artist/curator ran space. How long has it been in existence? The space was founded in July of 2013. What was your motivation? To utilize a particularly unique space as a venue for creative production and exhibition. Number of organizers/responsible persons of the project. One. How are programs funded? The programs are self funded, but sales would certainly be welcomed. Who is responsible for the programming? I am, but I hope to bring together various viewpoints and voices. Number and average duration of exhibitions/events per year. I expect to have about 8 exhibitions a year with various performance or video screenings interspersed in that schedule. What kind of events are usually organized? Solo exhibits, group shows, video shows and performances. How is your programming determined? By the quality of the work. I listen to suggestions from artists and curator friends, as well as conduct as many studio visits as possible. In addition to emerging artists coming out of the various academic programs in LA, I listen to the advice of those who have defined the trajectory of contemporary art in LA. Do you accept proposals/submissions? Yes, but they must take 2A’s spatial limitations into account. What is your artistic/curatorial approach? I’m interested in interstices and how artwork can occupy those loosely defined spaces. What’s working? What’s not working? Everything seems to be off to a great start. Maybe I’ll have a different answer after there have been a few shows. What kind of role do you hope to play in your local art scene or community? I want to provide an intimate experience where people can come together and enjoy a specific work or show. I usually move opening events between 2A and my personal apartment down the hall from the space. What idea are you most excited about for the future? I have an idea to create a couple of video towers showing six individual works. The videos are short so the work can be shared by a larger number of people.

Established in 2013 and open February 2014, The Continental Club is a concept by Ashley Joyce with design by partners Ashley Joyce and John Lasker. The Continental Club aims to cater to the vibrant and diverse downtown LA community. The design is based on a traditional London members’ club contrasted with modern, anti-establishment accents. Though officially a single street address, The Continental Club hosts two distinct settings. Sunday through Thursday guests enter from 4th Street to the J. Parkinson Room at The Continental Club. This intimate space is named after John Parkinson, the architect responsible for many iconic downtown landmarks including City Hall, The Coliseum, Union Station and The Continental Building. The emphasis is classic cocktails and conversation. On Fridays and Saturdays, guests are greeted by a doorman in the alley, led down a stairway and through a wood-paneled hallway to enter The Continental Club. This expanded space includes semi-private seating areas surrounding a central bar and small dance floor. Unique table service includes pitchers, punch bowls and martini sets. The attention to detail and exceptional service is reminiscent of Las Vegas, London and Havana clubs of the 1950s and 1960s. The Continental Club is part of Circa93.
