The San Francisco cable car system is the world's last manually operated cable car system. An icon of San Francisco, the cable car system forms part of the intermodal urban transport network operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway. Of the 23 lines established between 1873 and 1890, only three remain (one of which combines parts of two earlier lines): two routes from downtown near Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf, and a third route along California Street. While the cable cars are used to a certain extent by commuters, the vast majority of their 7 million annual passengers are tourists. They are among the most significant tourist attractions in the city, along with Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Fisherman's Wharf. The cable cars are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The cable cars are not to be confused with San Francisco's heritage streetcars, which operate on Market Street and the Embarcadero.HistoryBeginningsIn 1869, Andrew Smith Hallidie had the idea for a cable car system in San Francisco, reportedly after witnessing an accident where a streetcar drawn by horses over wet cobblestones slid backwards, killing the horses.
Montgomery Street is a shared Muni Metro and Bay Area Rapid Transit subway station in the Financial District of San Francisco, California. It is located on the Market Street Subway beneath Market Street, between Montgomery Street and Sansome Street. Embarcadero is a BART and Muni Metro station in the Financial District of San Francisco. The easternmost stop on the Market Street Subway, Embarcadero acts as a major hub for passenger movement throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. With 45,460 exits each weekday in 2015, Embarcadero is the busiest station in the BART system, a title for which it vies with its western neighbor, Montgomery Street. It is the first stop in San Francisco for BART trains after crossing through the Transbay Tube from West Oakland. This station was an infill station, opening in May 1976, three years after the rest of this section of BART's system; it was the first infill station in the BART system.LocationEmbarcadero is located in the northeastern section of San Francisco's Financial District, specifically underneath Market Street between Front and Drumm Streets to the north and Fremont and Main Streets to the south. The Ferry Building, Embarcadero Center, Transbay Terminal and the eastern end of the California Street cable car line are all located near Embarcadero station.HistoryService at this station began on May 27, 1976, three years after the other San Francisco stations. The station was not part of the original plans for the system. As a result of increasing development in the lower Market Street area, the basic structure of the station was added into the construction of the Market Street subway, anticipating a later opening. The later opening resulted in the Embarcadero station having a much different design than the other three Market Street stations. The station was designed by chief BART architect Tallie Maule and Hertzka & Knowles & Associates in collaboration with Parsons Brinckerhoff, Tudor Construction, and Bechtel.
Civic Center/UN Plaza is a BART and Muni Metro station in the Civic Center of San Francisco. The westernmost of the dual BART/Muni stops on the Market Street Subway, Civic Center/UN Plaza acts as a major hub for passenger movement throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. With 18,432 exits each weekday, it is the fourth-busiest station in the BART system.LocationOutside, in the United Nations Plaza itself, facing Market Street, there is a fountain and a north-south cross marking its center to be at latitude/longitude coordinates 37°46′48″N 122° 24′49″W. There is a flea market at the plaza or farmer's market every day, year round.There are several notable buildings in the Civic Center area, including City Hall, the War Memorial Opera House, Asian Art Museum, Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall. The San Francisco Public Library's main branch is located across the street and San Francisco City Clinic is 2 blocks east on 7th street. Tenderloin is located two blocks north of the station.HistoryService at this station began on November 5, 1973.Station layoutLike all stations in the Market Street Subway apart from Van Ness, Civic Center/UN Plaza has a tri-level configuration. Passengers first descend from the street to a mezzanine concourse containing faregates for passengers to enter separate BART and Muni paid areas, with one BART entrance on each end and one for Muni in the middle. Muni Metro trains stop at an island platform on the second level down. The Muni platform is punctured in several locations by openings for stairs and escalators that go directly from the mezzanine level to the BART platform, bypassing the Muni platform. As the openings are not blocked off by walls, it is possible to hear activity on the Muni platform from the BART platform.
Powell Street is a shared Muni Metro and Bay Area Rapid Transit station near the intersection of Market Street and Powell Street in downtown San Francisco. The station is located along the Market Street Subway and extends underground from Fourth Street to Fifth Street. Hallidie Plaza connects to the station on the north side of Market Street. Like all of the shared BART and Muni stations on the Market Street Subway, the concourse mezzanine is on the first level down, an island platform for the Muni Metro is on the second level down, and the island platform for BART is on the third level down.The Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde cable car lines turn around at Powell and Market, above the station. Union Square is three blocks north of the station, the Westfield San Francisco Centre is on Market at Powell and the old United States Mint building is located one block away at Fifth Street and Mission Street. Also nearby is the famous Yerba Buena Gardens and Moscone Center, each about a block away, near Mission Street on 4th. Within the area is the The Metreon shopping center and movie theater. Van Ness Station is a Muni Metro station on the Market Street Subway at the intersection of Market Street and Van Ness Avenue (U.S. Route 101) in San Francisco, California. The station consists of a concourse mezzanine on the first floor down, and a single island platform on the second level down. Service at this station began in February 1980.It is the final station (going outbound) or the first station (going inbound) wherein all of Muni Metro's lines run together along the Market Street Subway (until the Embarcadero Station), and going outbound, the metro lines split into two general directions prior to Church Station: the J and N lines exit the subway at the Duboce portal before Market & Church Streets to operate on surface streets, while the K, L, M, and S lines continue through the Market Street Subway to serve Church Station. Going inbound, the J and N lines enter the subway through the same portal where they exit outbound and meet up with the L, M, S, and T lines before heading into Van Ness Station.
