Spice was first established in 1997 in the upper eastside with the concept to Americanize Thai food in a place with a modern d袯r. As our popularity grew due to our wonderful and loyal patrons we expanded to locations in Chelsea and University Place (currently relocated to Union Sq.). Both locations are not only cutting edge but also in busy areas with lots of nearby activities. In an effort to grow into neighborhoods where we feel the locals will appreciate our brand of food and service we opened a new location on second avenue and Sixth Street. The design is a combination of vintage and trendy, reminiscent of the old diners of the area yet with clean lines and tons of wooden furniture that has become our trademark. Our prized marble bar and communal seating are new features in the spice method of operation but we feel the changes give our new space a unique feel. We at spice strive to be the premier Thai restaurant in the East Village. We continue to infuse classical Thai cuisine with a hint of the modern to appeal to both the traditionalist and fist time Thai diner. Please sample our delicious stuffed crab Rangoon, scrumptious shrimp fritters and our popular authentic Pad Thai. For the vegetarian in your group, be sure to try our meat-free dishes. After enjoying our flavorful Thai food, sip on a Passion Fruit Bellini, Lynchee Martini or a half Carafe of refreshing Pink Asian Sangria. Our hope is that our specialty drinks will make you feel like you are on a beautiful beach in Thailand.

According to Homer, Eolo—Italian for Greek mythology’s Aeolus, ruler of the wind— lived on the volcanic Aeolian islands off the north coast of Sicily and was a favorite among the Greek gods. He gave Odysseus a wine bag filled with wind to speed his historic voyage home. Nearly there, Odysseus’s curious crew opened the bag, the winds escaped and their ship was pulled back to the Sicilian archipelago. When I think about Sicily, my sensory memories of childhood summers come flooding back: the heat of scorching sun, the view of shooting stars in August, the taste of salt when swimming in the Mediteranean Sea, and the scent of the wind, which delivered the hot scirocco breeze from Africa in the desert-like summers. The air carried warm aromas of bread baking at the nearby panificio, dried shrubs burning to fertilize the soil and garlic and herbs from my neighbors’ kitchens. All of these smells arrived at my balcony window thanks to my imaginary friend, Eolo. ~Melissa
