Welcome to the Official Page for the High School of Fashion Industries (HSFI). This page will serve as a resource to all those interested in all that the high school is doing. The High School of Fashion Industries is located in the heart of Manhattan's Chelsea district. Serving grades 9 through 12, HSFI is a public school part of New York City's Department of Education. HSFI has career and technical education programs related to fashion, art, and merchandising. Our students are an extremely talented group and are often afforded several opportunities to exercise their talents through various partnerships and programs at HSFI. ------------------------------------------------- Below you'll find a little history regarding the High School of Fashion Industries. "The High School of Fashion Industries history begins in 1926. A garment center loft on West 31 Street, its initial purpose was to train a work force for the many different trades of the fashion industries. Most of the students were immigrants or children of immigrants who were working toward better lives in a new country. As part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project construction of a new school began in 1938. In 1941 Central Needle Trades High School opened its doors. The curriculum was almost entirely vocational focusing on sewing, machine work and fashion design. The school had many ties to the labor movement in New York as illustrated in the landmark murals in the auditorium [see groups images]. As the fashion industry of New York changed so did the high school. In 1956 the name was changed to the High School of Fashion Industries and new majors were added." ------------------------------------------------- Today the high school stands as a testament to the power of career and technical education. HSFI has hosted educators from Denmark, Austria, Turkey, and Japan in addition to many others from several states within the US. Publications such as the New York Times and Women's Wear Daily have taken notice of our faculty and student work. In closing here is a statement made about the high school after a visit by representatives of the National Center for Research in Vocational Education: 'Students we observed in classes and spoke with in groups were self-confident and motivated. They expressed great pride in their school, respect and admiration for their teachers, ad a strong sense of commitment to their education. They clearly felt a sense of connection to the school and the school family. Students who plan to pursue careers related to the occupational focus of the school felt they were receiving a first rate education for these pursuits; students who planned on careers unrelated to the specific focus felt they were receiving strong academic preparation as well as valuable work skills… The teachers and administration we observed and met were dedicated and innovative…Students told us of teachers working with them before school, after school and on lunch hours….' This organization, associated with the University of California and the U.S. Department of Education, was able to witness some of the amazing things that are happening at HSFI. The Washington Irving Campus is located at 40 Irving Place between East 16th and 17th Streets in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, near Union Square. It is a public school campus run by the New York City Department of Education. The campus was entirely a high school, Washington Irving High School, until 2008, when Gramercy Arts High School was established at the site, along with the High School for Language and Diplomacy in 2009, International High School at Union Square in 2010, and Union Square Academy for Health Sciences and the Academy for Software Engineering in 2012.HistoryThe school is named after writer Washington Irving. The building in which the school is located was designed by the architect C.B.J. Snyder and built in 1913. The original building is eight stories high, though the extension on 16th Street designed by Walter C. Martin and built in 1938, is eleven stories high.The school had been located on Lafayette Street, but because the student population was growing at a rapid rate, a decision was made to move the school to another location, and land was purchased at 40 Irving Place. The school started out as a branch of Wadleigh High School, known at first as Girls' Technical High School, the first school for girls in the city. In 1913 the name changed to Washington Irving. On September of 1986, the school became co-ed. Currently there are more than 2,000 students. In the period that Hector Xavier Monsegur (Sabu) attended Irving, 55% of the school's students graduated with their classes.
We are an academic community committed to educating students with adult responsibilities. We service the educational needs of students ages 17-21 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:35 p.m. Monday through Friday. Our unique hours provide students who work or raise families the opportunity to create an academic schedule that dovetails with their adult responsibilities. We have an open admissions policy and enroll students who have been discharged from other schools due to age and older foreign-born students with limited English proficiency. Our goal is to graduate students who are prepared for college or who are equipped with improved literacy and communication skills that enable them to find better employment or enhance their status in the workplace. In order to ensure that students receive the appropriate services they need to succeed, we engage in constant monitoring of attendance and academic performance, and in providing appropriate academic intervention and support services. Intervention may take the form of counseling, parent-teacher-student conferences, supplementary instruction, supervised study programs, group and individual tutorials, and the provision of social welfare supports such as medical, housing, legal, and employment assistance. Beginning in 1989 with only 25 students we serve over 800 a year today. Approximately two-thirds are older, foreign-born ELL students representing over 50 countries from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Our non-ELL students have typically dropped out from other schools or needed to leave those schools for a variety of reasons. Many of them have dropped out from more than one high school prior to their admission to our school. By the time they reach Manhattan Comprehensive, approximately 60% are legally and financially independent of their families. Approximately 70% work during the day to support themselves; approximately a third are raising children of their own.
Friends Seminary is a private day school in Manhattan. The school, the oldest continuously coeducational school in New York City, serves 761 college-bound day students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. The school's mission is to prepare students "not only for the world that is, but to help them bring about the world that ought to be." It is guided by a service mission statement and a diversity mission statement. Friends is a member of New York's Independent School Diversity Network, and diversity is a key part of its educational philosophy.Currently, Robert "Bo" Lauder is principal, the school's 35th. Lauder came to Friends in the fall of 2002 after serving as Upper School Head at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.HistoryFriends Seminary, established by members of the Religious Society of Friends, whose members are known as Quakers, was founded in 1786 as Friends' Institute through a $10,000 bequest of Robert Murray, a wealthy New York merchant. It was located on Pearl Street in Manhattan and strived to provide Quaker children with a "guarded education." In 1826, the school was moved to a larger campus on Elizabeth Street. Tuition in that year was $10 or less per annum, except for the oldest students, whose families paid $20. (By 1915, tuition had risen to $250.) The school again moved in 1860 to its current location and changed its name to Friends Seminary.In 1878, Friends Seminary was one of the earliest of schools to establish a Kindergarten. In 1925, it was the first private co-educational school to hire a full-time psychologist. M. Scott Peck, who transferred to Friends from Phillips Exeter in late 1952, praised the school's diversity and nurturing atmosphere. "While at Friends," he wrote, "I awoke each morning eager for the day ahead... t Exeter, I could barely crawl out of bed."
Baruch College Campus High School is a public high school located in the Flatiron District in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Baruch College Campus High School received the highest number of applications among all of the New York City public high schools in 2011. BCCHS is renowned for its high academic standards, advisory program and perfect graduation rate. In 2012, BCCHS ranked 489 in the U.S. News & World Report list of best "gold-medal" U.S. high schools.HistoryBaruch College Campus High School was a vision between Anthony Alvarado, the former superintendent of Community School District 2, and Matthew Goldstein, the President of Baruch College. They wanted to create a small, liberal arts college preparatory high school on a college campus. In 1997, the school was established. Jill Myers was the principal for the first 6 years in the original location of the school on 18th Street. The school was later moved to 17 Lexington Avenue's upper floors. In 2009, the school moved to 55 East 25th Street between Park and Madison Avenues, which is near Baruch College of The City University of New York.EnrollmentAdmission to BCCHS is based on a screening process whereby the school evaluates and ranks all applicants based on their previous school year's final academic record, standardized test scores, attendance and punctuality. The demographics of the students is as follows: 61 percent Asian, 22 percent white, 11 percent Hispanic, and 6 percent black.
The Norman Thomas High School for Business and Commercial Education is a public high school in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City under the New York City Department of Education. Formerly known as Central Commercial High School, and before that, the Central School of Business and Arts, its former location was on 42nd Street in a structure constructed with a 20-story office building in the air rights above it. It was renamed after Presbyterian minister and Socialist activist Norman Thomas and moved to occupy the first nine floors of 3 Park Avenue, a 42-story skyscraper on East 33rd Street at Park Avenue in 1975.The high school was originally designed to train students for secretarial and commercial occupations such as accounting, bookkeeping, merchandising and salesmanship, clerical skills, stenography and typing. As of 1940, every senior at Central Commercial High School was required to complete four weeks of work in an office during the last semester. In later years, this has expanded to include such topics as data processing and physical distribution
The United Nations International School (UNIS) was established in 1947 by a group of United Nations Parents to provide an international education for their children, while preserving their diverse cultural heritages. What began as a nursery school for 20 children quickly grew, adding grades, students and faculty. Today, UNIS has over 1550 students in two locations, serving the United Nations, International and New York communities. Our campus in Jamaica Estates, Queens is a K-8 school and our Manhattan campus, overlooking the East River, is K-12. UNIS was one of the founding schools of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and was among those awarding the first diplomas. The comprehensive K-12 curriculum prepares UNIS students for the IB, and the school’s internationally recognized academic standards enable our students and to go on to study in top colleges and universities in the United States and worldwide. The main language of instruction is English and all students study French or Spanish, beginning in the elementary school; Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese and Russian are also taught beginning in the seventh grade at our Manhattan campus. At Rebecca School, we consider the variations in individual motor and sensory processing systems and tailor each child’s program to his or her specific needs. There is no “one-size-fits-all” for children with neurodevelopmental delays in relating and communicating. Each child has unique strengths to be developed and limitations to be remediated. Our goal is not to fit the child to the program but to fit the program to the child.

The School of Apostles and Prophets is dedicated to bringing integrity to the Prophetic and Apostolic ministry. This is accomplished by a syllabus that teaches not only spiritual giftings, but also brings emphasis to maturity and character building. These courses are conducted with the aim of training and equipping both members and visitors who are either called to fivefold ministry or simply want to understand the function of these five ministries; (Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, Teachers) in the local church. It is our conviction that the Church is “built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone” (Eph.2:20) Local churches that have an active apostolic and prophetic ministry incorporated in their leadership structure, tend to be more founded in their faith and more able to mature and mentor others into deeper faith and growth. Pastors, Teachers and Evangelists are just as important to the development of the saints, but there has been an abundant emphasis and supply of these ministries for decades. The Holy Spirit is now revisiting the Church and re-vitalizing the five headship ministries. He is demolishing our stereotyping of their function and placement, and rebuilding all five offices based on better things. The School of Apostles and Prophets will bring great understanding to you as a student or as a seeker in this regard.

Students in the BFA Photography & Video Department are immersed in all aspects of commercial and fine art photography, giving them a better understanding of various genres, ideas and vocabularies. With access to cutting-edge facilities—as well as a 100-plus faculty of photographers, museum directors, critics, art directors, photo editors and photography collectors—students are able to cultivate their own sensibility and visual style. School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City is an established leader and innovator in the education of artists. From its inception in 1947, the faculty has been comprised of professionals working in the arts and art-related fields. SVA provides an environment that nurtures creativity, inventiveness and experimentation, enabling students to develop a strong sense of identity and a clear direction of purpose.

The Digital Imaging Center is a treasury of technological resources assembled in one location, serving full-time, matriculated undergraduate students majoring in advertising and graphic design as well as students registered in classes held in the DIC. Part of the creative process is the final output and execution of work. The industry-standard printers and copiers of the DIC Studio provide the electronic and manual tools to bring projects to life. The lab is closed during the winter break and for two weeks prior to the summer session as well as the two weeks at the end of the summer. Students must pay a summer lab fee in order to use the lab during the summer.
The SVA Library contains 80,000 books, millions of digital images, a picture file of 150,000 images and special collections of videos, DVDs, scripts and comics. The library maintains subscriptions to 400 print periodicals as well as a number of online reference databases in art, design, the humanities and popular culture, and offers computers with Internet access and a range of digital-imaging hardware. In October of 2006, the Milton Glaser Design Study Center and Archives opened with more than 5,000 works of art, sketches, magazines, newspapers, photographs, posters, prints and other materials. The archives have since grown, and include the Chermayeff & Geismar, Seymour Chwast, Heinz Edelmann, Steven Heller, Ed McCabe, James McMullan, Tony Palladino, George Tscherny and Henry Wolf collections.
