I’m a psychologist and coach, currently licensed in Arizona (PSY 4315) and California (PSY 27871), who likes to take a caring yet upfront approach to therapy. I have experience treating a variety of concerns, from sleep issues to relationship problems to anxiety and depression. My passion lies with treating underserved populations and I look forward in particular to working with the LGBTQ, Kink/BDSM, and Polyamory/Open Relationship/Swinger population. Whether you are struggling with something minor, looking for a life-approach overhaul, or wanting to tune up your relationship, I can offer you help on your own schedule. I offer office hours outside of the usual 9-5 weekday schedule.
I specialize in working with individuals and couples who have endured a loss in life. Loss is present in the death of a family member or beloved pet, the end of a relationship, the onset of chronic illness, coming out as LGBT, a troubled (or absent) sex life, a breakdown in communication within a partnership, changing careers, finishing school or being laid off from a job. Even aging or a change in our physical appearance, such as weight gain, can create feelings of grief. I work from the assumption that you are the ultimate expert on your life, not me, and that you just need some support during a time of transition, or some help getting "un-stuck" from a pattern that isn't serving you anymore. I won't judge you, or tell you what choices to make, and I don't assume there is something "wrong" with you. (In fact, I think that seeking personal therapy is one of the healthiest, most self-affirming choices you can make!) I also won't stare blankly in a way that makes you squirm, with an occasional "Mmm hmmm" before announcing, "I'm afraid our time is up for this week." Here's what I will do: I will listen empathically, ask questions to elicit your truth, and share what I've learned about human behavior through my education and many years of working with people. I will guide you to figure out what might be "in the way" of you having the life you want, and then we'll work together to figure out how to change what isn't working. For those with past trauma, or for individuals who are suffering with anxiety or phobias, I offer EMDR, which is an effective and generally short term treatment specifically designed for these issues. My style is warm, compassionate and highly interactive. I see my work as first and foremost connecting with you as another human being trying to survive in this demanding world. I provide a supportive environment that supports self exploration, as well as offering new ways to think about personal challenges, suggestions for alternative actions, and gentle probing into places where you may be holding yourself back from your full potential. I trust that people are doing the best they can at any given time, and that even behaviors that no longer serve us have a positive intent behind them. My main office is located on the border of the Mission and Bernal Heights neighborhoods of San Francisco, with ample, free parking and access by public transportation. I have a second office in Burlingame, just off El Camino Real, which is a ten minute walk from the Burlingame Caltrain station. I sometimes work with a small therapy dog, and my San Francisco office is dog friendly, so you are welcome to bring your canine buddy with you at that location. Please call or email for a no-cost consultation, to see if we're a "good fit."
Therapy is a transformative process that facilitates change by helping people to become more themselves. I work collaboratively with my clients to create a space where they can explore their experience with the trust that whatever they share with me will be met with respect, empathy, and curiosity. The therapeutic process is a creative endeavor that is different for each individual I work with, so I encourage clients to express what works for them and what doesn’t. While therapy expands one’s understanding of the past, it is ultimately about finding freedom, ease, and fulfillment in the present. Exploring the past is productive when it increases our self-compassion by illuminating the relationship between past events and current challenges, and when it allows us the opportunity to process emotions that were previously overwhelming. From a place of self-awareness and self-acceptance, people can use therapy to develop tools and practices that allow them to risk experimenting with new ways of being in the world. This process can be deepened and accelerated by grounding it in bodily awareness. What is unconscious can often be accessed through the body, so I occasionally invite clients to notice their sensations, or help them explore their patterns of movement and breathing. Generations of ancestors have influenced our personal histories, and we are embedded in cultures and institutions that shape our experience. It is essential to consider these larger forces to fully make sense of our lives, and including these factors in the therapeutic process helps empower people by relating their personal difficulties to systems of power and oppression.

St. Anthony-Immaculate Conception School, located on the border between San Francisco’s historic Mission District and the Bernal Heights Neighborhood, was founded in 1894 by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose to educate the immigrant children of this neighborhood. As the demographics of the neighborhood have changed, the mission of the school has remained constant, provide the best quality education possible to the children entrusted to our care. SAIC keeps up-to-date with educational theory and practice to ensure our students are well-prepared for the rigors of high school. 100% of our eighth graders who apply to Catholic and private high schools are accepted to one of their top three choices. We offer a rigorous academic program that focuses on 21st Century Skills in a supportive and nurturing, faith-based environment. In addition to the core academic subjects, we are very strong in technology and the arts. We are a small community and our strong sense of faith and family permeate everything we do. We have small class sizes, with teacher to student ratio averaging 1:16, which allows for teachers to get to know all of their students and their families very well. This also allows students the opportunity to grow in their faith as they deepen their knowledge both in and out the classroom.
