The Missouri School for the Blind is an educational institution in the United States specially designed for students who are blind or visually impaired. It has served the Greater St. Louis area for more than 150 years as a governmental agency of the state of Missouri. In 1860, the Missouri School became the first educational institution in the nation to adopt the braille system. It also owned, developed and operated one of the nation's earliest braille printing presses.HistoryThe Missouri School for the Blind is a state-operated agency in St. Louis, Missouri, serving children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The school opened under the formal name "Missouri Institution for the Education of the Blind" in 1851. It was organized as a private charitable enterprise by Eli William Whelan, a blind teacher who had previously been the superintendent of the Tennessee Institution for the Blind. The Missouri General Assembly placed the school under state control in 1855, and it was given its present name by legislative decree in 1879.Among the alumni of the Missouri School are the blind musicians John William Boone (1864–1927) and Louis Hardin, aka "Moondog" (1916–1999).Modern eraAs of 2011, the school has an enrollment of sixty-seven students served by nineteen teachers, forming a student/teacher ratio of 3.5. Modern classrooms are augmented with technologically advanced tools including BrailleNotes and other computers with refreshable Braille displays and text-to-speech functions. The physical location of the school has changed numerous times since it was founded, but it has never closed. It remains in the city of St. Louis, fully operated by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

St. Francis de Sales Church (the Oratory of Saint Francis de Sales) is a Roman Catholic Oratory located in south St. Louis, Missouri. It is the second largest church in the Archdiocese of St. Louis after the cathedral-basilica. The church is popularly known as the "Cathedral of South St. Louis."The historic main church was designed in the neo-Gothic style. Its stained glass windows were crafted by the St. Louis glazier Emil Frei, Sr. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 2005 the church has been operated by the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, which practices the Latin liturgy and emphasizes the liturgical arts, with a strong music program.BeginningsThe original Saint Francis de Sales Church was destroyed following the great St. Louis Tornado in 1896. It was rebuilt according to the design of Berlin architect Viktor Klutho in a neo-Gothic style. The sanctuary contains an 52ft altarpiece featuring a polychrome sculpture of the Crucifixion in its upper register. Side altars are dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, as well as Our Mother of Perpetual Help and the Infant of Prague. The stained glass windows are the work of the eminent St. Louis glazier Emil Frei, Sr. The church is dedicated in honor of Saint Francis de Sales, bishop and doctor of the Church. At 300 feet tall, the church, with its main spire, ranks as the sixth-tallest church in the United States.

Hello there St. Louis queers! I'm Aurora, and I'm here to rid you of all your heteronormative nightmares... at least as far as the fit of your garb goes. I am the founder of Queer Alt STL, the big, warm hug of an alteration shop that you've been missing since you bought that awesome vintage men's button down that droops off your dainty lady shoulders. After a year of pitiful home-taught sewing while working as a nanny in England, I finally went to school and got a shiny BFA in Costume Design and Realisation for Theatre and Film at Northbrook College in Worthing, West Sussex. I then worked in the West End in London, apprenticing in costume making for The Lion King and Shrek the Musical, and ended up with a full time dressing job on Singin' in the Rain. After moving back to St. Louis in April of 2013, I began working as a seamstress at a couture bridal shop. After working with a few queer customers who weren't sure what to expect at the bridal shop, I thought how wonderful it would be to serve the St. Louis LGBT community with a clearly open, accepting, non-judgmental alterations studio.
