What Book ’Em needs: - Paperback dictionaries - Thin, paperback cook books - Manga, comics (Super heros, etc) , graphic novels - Small business ideas / self-employment - Paperback mysteries, especially those with male protagonists - Criminal law / Blacks Law Dictionary - Ancient mythology, all cultures - Hood novels - History (all cultures) - Home improvement / how to build things - African authors - fiction/non-fiction - Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) - Sci-fi and fantasy - Beginning languages - all, including sign language - Horror, vampires - Native American / Indigenous authors - fiction / non-fiction - Computer science, networking, programming - Cars - Books with odd and interesting facts What Book ’Em does not need: • Heavy textbooks (except nursing) • General fiction. (eg: book group selections) • Encyclopedias/heavy volumes -- Bibles, as they are usually provided by prison pastors. However, we do get requests from women prisoners for Christian fiction. When donating fiction, please keep in mind that 90% of our recipients are men, and thus are interested in novels written by men about male protagonists; at this time we have plenty of novels written for women. No prison will accept a book with writing, underlining, or spiral binding. Out of respect for the inmates, we do not send books which are musty, stained, or outdated. We can use textbooks if they don’t have underlining and if they aren't over 3 pounds, as postage is very expensive. Books can be dropped off at the Merton Center, M – F from 10 to 4, Saturday 12 - 4, and during our Sunday work sessions.
Radiant Hall Studios traces its origins back to November 2012, when Ryan Lammie returned to Pittsburgh from New York. He was looking for a studio space for his art making and soon signed a lease for a makeshift studio in a 1930s former Polish social hall in Lawrenceville. Finding himself with more space than he could use, he invited an artist friend to move in. Radiant Hall has since become a framework for creative community building, especially around issues of sustainable development. In 2015 Radiant Hall became a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, with Ryan Lammie as Executive Director.
While Pittsburgh's air quality has improved significantly since the days of "The Smoky City", there is still a lot of work to be done. Local athletes are regularly exposed to high levels of PM 10, PM 2.5, Smog, and ozone which can all lead to health and respiratory problems. AU is dedicated to educating local athletes about these problems and empowering them to make a difference in the fight against unhealthy air.
We come up with innovative solutions to global problems that work mostly on the individual level. A big theme is the untapped power that each person has. We say: "Raindrops make rivers, and rivers move mountains."
Pittsburgh's tender mercies, respect for its lands, and loyalty to high ideals are more than evident within the gates of Allegheny Cemetery. Conceived in the minds of Pittsburgh's leading families and businessmen in 1844, Allegheny Cemetery was created to be far more than the typical country burying grounds of that age. After its incorporation, 100 acres were purchased and the first interment took place in 1845. Today, Allegheny Cemetery encompasses 300 acres with over 15 miles of roadways. Of that 300 acres, 100 acres remain for future development, making Allegheny not only one of the most affordable but accessible cemeteries in the greater Pittsburgh area. Allegheny Cemetery has been the choice of more than 124,000 people as their final resting place. Some had worldwide fame, others were known throughout Pittsburgh. But most were known only by the friends and family who loved them and wanted the assurance that they would be memorialized in the most caring, dignified, and respectful manner possible. Together, they make up the Allegheny Cemetery family.
