JHess Studios is the teaching atelier of sculptress Alicia Ponzio and painter Justin Hess, with Justin’s personal working studio at its core. The Atelier system is a centuries-old tradition of training artists within the studio of an active professional artist, providing both a ‘classroom’ structure of education combined with the opportunity to work alongside with and learn from a professional artist. The studio itself offers 2,200 sqft of open studio space with light flooding in from large North and South facing windows. Housed in a historic building constructed in 1924, JHess Studios is located in the SOMA district of San Francisco and is easily accessible by major freeways as well as public transportation with plenty of parking in the surrounding neighborhood. Classes are held in the evenings and on weekends to better accommodate those with work, family and other personal commitments. As the skills involved take a great deal of time and practice to develop, students are welcome to take one or multiple classes in each session, or on an ongoing basis. Those who wish to replicate the curriculum similar to that of a full time academy, but without the full time commitment, are able to work with the instructors to design a suitable course of study tailored to their individual needs and schedule. Courses are offered quarterly throughout the year in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Écorché and Anatomy, as well as week long workshops held regularly in January and the Summer.

EVERY WEDNESDAY: Drop in class and milonga (dance party). 8 pm: Beginner/Intermediate class. Regular classes by Marcelo Solis. 9 pm to midnight: Milonga, with the best music. Each class begins with brushing the fundamentals: walking to the rhythm of tango, proper posture and body alignment, comfortable embrace. Every time we investigate a series of concepts using the movements of the dance, from very basics to more sophisticated. We will work on technical details through exercises and drills. I will demonstrate how the elements function in connection with the music, the floor, the partner, and other couples on the line of dance. The students learn to gracefully navigate the milonga floor as well as the whole cultural context of social tango. At Café Florida we play an exquisite selection of Tango, Milonga and Vals tandas; you’ll find a friendly and inviting atmosphere, where dancers adhere to the Milonga codes. Experience the connection of dancing Tango, join us. Prices: $15 one class and/or milonga. CLASSES CARDS: $44 for 4 classes for one individual. $72 for 8 classes for one individual or it can be shared by a couple that takes the classes together and dance together.
