Dear Friends of the Detroit Greek Independence Parade, Annual Detroit Greek Independence Parade is a celebration Orthodoxy, Hellenism, and Freedom. Detroit/Windsor Metropolitan area is one of the strongest Hellenic communities across entire United States and Canada. We are proud of our heritage and of how we have shaped history in the Detroit area. The Parade offers us an opportunity to further grow our unique culture and keep it influential and alive. This year, we would like to recognize individuals that have shown exemplary results in promoting Orthodoxy, Hellenic Civilization, and Hellenic Culture. Over the years, they have selflessly contributed their time, energy, and resources for the betterment of our Greek American community. It is important to recognize senior members of the Hellenic community that have laid the foundation and continue to be pillars in the Hellenic society. We owe these individuals a debt of gratitude for helping preserve Hellenism for future generations to come. Without their diligent efforts, our rich history and culture would be lost. Nomination forms will be available at the DGIDP meetings, Malista.com, greekparades.com, and [email protected]
The RAIZ UP is a hip-hop collective based in Southwest Detroit. Taking hip-hop back to its “roots,” we started gathering outdoors at Clark Park this past summer, with open mic/freestyle cyphers; beatmaking, graffiti and b-boy sessions; and dialogues. We believe hip-hop has the potential to help build a better community through artistic creation, participatory education, and collective action. Our initial goal is to provide an open space for everyone to practice, enjoy and/or learn about the different elements of hip-hop culture. We recognize that all those who love and appreciate hip-hop have something to contribute and are welcomed. Understanding that hip-hop often plays an active role in raising awareness and fighting for social change, we also wish to encourage each other to critically explore the social issues that affect us as a community. We will be organizing a series of upcoming activities: workshops, film screenings/discussions and live hip-hop shows. As your neighbors and friends, we invite you to help us build on these ideas by actively participating with your experience, talents, skills and opinions!
