Gold Star Studios was a major independent recording studio located in Los Angeles, California, United States. For more than thirty years, from 1950 to 1984, Gold Star was one of the most influential and successful commercial recording studios in the world.Founded by David S. Gold and Stan Ross and opened in October 1950, Gold Star Recording Studios was located at 6252 Santa Monica Boulevard near the corner of Vine Street in Hollywood, the studio name was a combination of the names of the two owners -- (Dave) GOLD and STA(n) R(oss). The studio was renowned for its unique custom-designed recording equipment, which was designed and built by Gold, as were its famed echo chambers.Peak yearsIn the mid-1950s, aspiring pop star and future recording legend Phil Spector began hanging out at local studios, including Gold Star, hoping to learn about recording. He eventually won the confidence of Gold Star's house producer-engineer Stan Ross, who took Spector under his wing and taught him the basics of record production. In the early 1960s, Spector used Gold Star as the recording venue for most of his famous "Wall of Sound" recordings. It was also the venue for many important recordings by the Beach Boys, including portions of their 1966 LP Pet Sounds, the international #1 hit "Good Vibrations", and recordings for the aborted Smile project.
Ocean Way Recording was the name of a series of recording studios located in Los Angeles, California and Nashville, Tennessee. Originally known as a two-building complex in Hollywood called United Western Recorders, the United site was sold to Allen Sides, who renamed it to Ocean Way Recording in 1988.In 1999, the building located on 6050 Sunset Boulevard was partitioned and sold as EastWest Studios. Ocean Way retained the other building and continued to operate on 6000 Sunset Boulevard. In 2015, it was sold and renamed to United Recording Studios.BackgroundThe original United Western studios, constructed in 1952, was the home of many major recording sessions in the 1960s and 1970s. Bill Putnam, the original owner and partner, Jerry Barnes, sold the studio operations to Harman Industries along with UREI (United Recording Electrical Industries) in 1982. Allen Sides purchased the United property in 1988, and renamed it Ocean Way Recording. He had been leasing Studio B in United for 2 years previously.In 1999, the original Ocean Way/Western Recorders facility at 6000 Sunset Blvd. was sold to Cello Recording Studios (now EastWest Studios ), and Sides retained the building next door at 6050 Sunset Blvd.LocationsTwo additional studios were later added to the Ocean Way Family; Record One studios in Sherman Oaks in 1988, and Ocean Way/Nashville opened on famed Music Row in 1997. The Ocean Way Nashville facility was later sold to Belmont University. Ocean Way recording now carries on business at two locations - Hollywood and Sherman Oaks.
Gower Gulch is a nickname for the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Gower Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.Since the days of silent film, the surrounding area had contained several movie studios, including the Christie Studios (on the northwest corner) during the 1920s, then later, Columbia and Republic Studios to the south along Gower Street. Western films at both studios were extremely popular, especially from the 1930s through the 1950s, and actual working cowboys would come to Hollywood hoping to find work in the movies. They would congregate at that particular street corner, which is how it acquired its nickname. The Columbia Drug Store, which stood on the southeast corner for several decades, was a hangout for many western film extras in hopes of finding work, knowing the casting agents from the studio could reach them there. Indeed, John Wayne, Gene Autry, and Roy Rogers all got their start in this neighborhood, as did director John Ford. Columbia Studios was filming western films about every ten days for a time. The cowboy extras stood at the corner already dressed in their Stetson hats, boots, and bandannas, ready for saloon scenes, as cattle rustlers, or as members of a posse. The pay was about $5 a day or $10 for a minor speaking role.
The Ravenswood is a historic apartment building at 570 North Rossmore Avenue in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Designed by architect Max Maltzman and built by Paramount Pictures in 1930, it is considered a landmark Art Deco masterpiece. It has been declared a Historic-Cultural Monument (no. 768) by the City of Los Angeles.HistoryThroughout the years, it housed several movie stars, including Mae West, Ava Gardner and Clark Gable.Mae West moved into Apartment #611, a 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit, shortly after her arrival in Hollywood in 1932. The apartment had been reserved for her by Paramount and she liked it so much she never left. Offered a lifetime lease, she eventually had a share in the building when she lent the owners some money and they used the building as collateral. West lived there until her death in 1980.Artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres also resided here for a time.
Pacific Theatres's Cinerama Dome is a movie theater located at 6360 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California. Designed to present widescreen Cinerama films, it opened November 7, 1963. Today it continues as a leading first run theater. The original developer was Saul Pick.HistoryIn February 1963, Cinerama Inc. unveiled a radically new design for theaters which would show its movies. They would be based on the geodesic dome developed by R. Buckminster Fuller, would cost half as much as conventional theaters of comparable size, and could be built in half the time. Cinerama's goal was to see at least 600 built worldwide within two years. The following April, Pacific Theatres Inc. announced plans to build the first theater based upon the design, and had begun razing existing buildings at the construction site. Located on Sunset near Vine Street, it would be the first new major motion picture theater in Hollywood in 33 years, and would be completed in time for the scheduled November 2 press premiere of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. The design was adapted by the noted architectural firm of Welton Becket and Associates.Total construction time is reported to have been 16 weeks. The domed roof comprises 316 precast concrete panels (most hexagonal) in 16 patterns, each weighing some 3200lb. The first pentagonal panel was placed on August 29, with the rest to be installed over 4 weeks.

Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church is a parish in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles located on Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood, California. The church today serves an urban, multiethnic community and is known for, among other things, its gay and lesbian ministry and its many outreach programs, including programs to assist the poor. Founded in 1904, the parish was the home parish for many actors during the classic Hollywood era of the 1920s through the 1950s, including Bing Crosby, John Ford, Irene Dunne, Loretta Young, Ricardo Montalban and Ann Blyth. The Italian Renaissance church, built in 1928, but not completed until 1954, received a historic preservation grant in 2000 for the J. Paul Getty Trust and is considered one of the most beautiful churches in the Los Angeles Archdiocese.HistoryEarly yearsBlessed Sacrament Church was formed in 1904, and the first church, which accommodated 250 people, was built on Hollywood Boulevard (then called Prospect Ave). As the movie business developed in the 1910s, the population of Hollywood increased dramatically. By 1919, the old church was "literally bursting at the seams every Sunday." Enrollment at the parish school also jumped from 17 students in 1915 to 140 in 1919.

A place in the 80's for veteran and newbie Hollywood "Wanna-Bees" that just wanted to get noticed and make it big someday! Whitley has since closed it's doors to the local wanna bees and has been converted to an upscale over-priced condo building! LMAO Yuck! or should I say Yucca... :)
Hollywood United Methodist Church is a United Methodist church located at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Highland Avenue in the Hollywood Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Its English Gothic architecture and the giant HIV/AIDS Red Ribbon on the bell-tower have made it a prominent landmark in Hollywood. The church's facilities, in addition to housing an active congregation, are used by the private non-religious Oaks School and have been the settings for many movies including Sister Act and Back to the Future.HistoryConstruction on the first building, the Recreational Hall, was started in 1927 by a group of congregants who began organizing the new church in 1909. The rest of the structure was completed on March 16, 1930.ArchitectureThe church building was designed by Thomas P. Barber, and based in part on the English Gothic style of Westminster Hall in London. The structure is steel-framed concrete, with the sanctuary roof having an open hammer beam construction.Use as a movie filming locationDue to its convenient location in the heart of Hollywood and its mixture of Gothic and modern architecture, the church has been used frequently as a filming location for Hollywood movies. The "Enchantment Under the Sea" dance scenes in Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II were filmed in the church's gymnasium. Interior scenes for the movie Sister Act were filmed in the hallways, classrooms, and offices of the church, although the film crew repainted the interior to make it appear much older. Scenes from Anger Management, Big Momma's House, Jarhead, People Like Us, and several other movies were filmed on the premises.
