The Tabernacle building has a rich & storied history. Opened in 1910 as The Broughton Tabernacle; Dr. Leonard Gaston Broughton was the pastor and a physician. Dr. Broughton started the Georgia Baptist Medical Center and nursing school, which began as the Tabernacle infirmary with three beds. The Third Baptist Church was an active congregation with over 4000 members. The congregation relocated during the mid eighties and the building lay vacant until the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, when it was converted into a House of Blues club. After the Olympics, the building continued to operate as a music venue under a variety of different owners. The Tabernacle is currently operated by Live Nation. Atlanta is known on the surface for things like Coca Cola, Gone with the Wind, and our International Airport. What people outside of the city may not know about is the rich artistic culture bubbling just underneath the surface. A night at Speakeasy Electro Swing Atlanta is one of mind expansion and wonder. Nestled in some of the best underground clubs in the city, it is a hot bed of the best variety arts and music the south has to offer. With DJ Doctor Q at the helm, spinning the tunes as a back drop to performance artists, circus entertainers, burlesque performers, makers and vendors, this is an event to keep on your calendar throughout the year.
Introducing….Sounds from the Underground The movement that we call “Sounds from the Underground “(SFTU) was born out of struggle. From around the city, Atlanta’s rising jazz composers were notating piece after piece and filling up their desk with songs from a place deep inside them with not enough venues to support their appetite for live expression. For some time, these musicians have dealt with these frustrations…and we’re happy to say that the times are a changin’. SFTU will start it’s residency at a small hideaway known as Elliot Street Pub in the Castleberry Hills district of Atlanta. Below this quaint neighborhood bar littered with musical portraits that feature Frank Zappa and others lays a refurbished basement that was once home to the jazz club “Dee’s Bird Cage” from the 1940s to the 1980s. This quaint space will be our listening room for some of the finest music Atlanta has to offer every 2nd and 4th Mondays starting Feb 27th at 8pm. Each night we’ll feature two local composers and their music that is improvisational in nature. Because we aim to peak the interest of fellow musicians and music lovers we will not be charging a cover initially. We will however provide a basket for each one of our patrons to contribute to support each act that brings their talents to the stage in hopes that something special can grow and flourish. In addition to this, we hope you’ll support this wonderful venue buy purchasing something to say thanks to them for hosting us. Spread the word. The movement has begun in Atlanta.
