El Alma is a vibrant, homespun take on the contemporary flavors of Mexico. Chef Alma Alcocer-Thomas prepares food as she might cook for you in her home. Diners will find tacos al pastor, queso, and carne asada tacos, but will also have an array of small plates and sophisticated entrees using fresh ingredients and richly layered sauces including duck enchiladas with mole, relleno de camarones (shrimp-stuffed poblano served with chipotle sauce and corn pudding), and for the hearty vegetarians out there, smokey ancho relleno stuffed with seasonal vegetables. Alcocer also features one of her childhood favorites, ‘gringas,’ a popular Mexico City snack made of flour tortillas, cheese, and savory pastor. “I wanted to create a menu that would fit the location on Barton springs,” says Alcocer. “It’s fun, flavorful Mexican food that is very approachable. It’s a casual, authentic representation of the food I grew up eating.”

Little Barrel and Brown
Distance: 0.2 mi Competitive Analysis
1716 S Congress Ave
Austin, TX 78704

(512) 582-1229

That sense of adventure is what Little Barrel and Brown is all about. Three friends originally from Chicago wanted to open a restaurant on South Congress that was diverse (food- and price-wise) and would add to the already amazing culinary scene. Matt Botticelli, Andrew Botticelli, and Tim Brown—the team behind Botticellis South Congress—felt that Austin, and SoCo in particular, had a void when it came to American and New American dining, so the trio opened Little Barrel and Brown in late December 2013. “We always said we wanted a place where you could have a meal for $15 or $50,” said Matt Botticelli. “If you were a vegetarian, there were options. If you just wanted a sandwich, we had that—and great appetizers and beautiful entrées.” The menu caters to a discerning bar crowd and features creative takes on traditional dishes and fresh ingredients from local purveyors including John Lash’s Farm to Table, Lonestar Foodservice, and JBG. Items range from appetizers such as Sloppy Joe Sliders with duck confit, arugula, and pickled red onion ($14) and Lockhart Grilled Quail with carrot, peas, potato, and cornbread ($15) to a Blue Cheese Burger with marrownaise and fixin’s ($13) and a Roast Pork Sandwich with braised greens, pickles, and beer mustard ($14) to entrées such as Grilled Rack of Lamb with wild rice, brussels sprouts, and lamb bacon ($30) and Red Snapper with rice, savoy cabbage, and beets ($32). The eclectic mix of food is complemented by a thriving bar scene. The idea is to relax while imbibing on a craft cocktail, a delicious wine, or a local brew (happy hour is daily from 5 to 7 and all day on Sunday and Monday). Or simply dine at the large bar—it can seat up to 24 people—which is truly the centerpiece of Little Barrel and Brown and runs through the entire restaurant. Interior designer Natalie Holzem juxtaposed rich colors and fabrics with modern fixtures and exposed brick to create an inviting urban space. The bar is also front and center at brunch (Saturdays and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.), where mixologists whip up homemade Bloody Mary’s ($6) and light mimosas (glasses $3 and carafes $10) to go with a menu that features everything from chicken and waffles and yogurt parfaits to steak and eggs and a traditional LB&B breakfast of eggs, house-made sausage, toast, and hash browns with gravy. Kids are welcome too and can order from their own menu.

Little Lucy's Mini Donuts story starts with a young boy who would visit San Francisco's Pier 39 to frequent a shop that had his favorite treat: mini-donuts. After polishing off a bag of the mini-donuts, he would fold up the bag and save it in his velcro wallet as a reminder of the deliciousness he had just experienced. This boy would wait months until he could return, and when he did, he would unfold the bag from his wallet to get a refill. To him, those mini-donuts were the entire reason for a trek to San Francisco. Later, as an adult he returned to the same shop with a friend who instantly became a fellow mini-donut lover and business partner. Together, they have gone through countless measures to bring the same goodness to home — in Austin, TX. With the help of a little pup named Lucy (our mascot and inspiration), the dream came to life. Today, we're pumping out those fresh mini-donuts at our awesome pink truck at 74 Rainey St starting at 8 pm weekdays and 4pm on weekends. We stay open until 12am on weekdays and 2:30am on weekends. Why are you still reading this? Go there now!

Cooper's Old Time Pit BBQ Austin

217 Congress Ave
Austin, TX 78701

(512) 474-4227

Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que is honored to be the best of the best in the barbecue business and home of the original World Famous "Big Chop." The Wootan Family has provided its World Famous Pit Barbecue to hundreds of thousands of hungry diners over the years at its family-owned and operated restaurant. Now you can get a taste of Texas Hill Country BBQ that restaurant reviewers have raved about, and remember It's All About The Meat. Cooper's famous Old Time Pit Bar-b-que looks forward to it's first Austin location at 217 Congress, opening in the fall of 2014. Celebrating the history of Congress Avenue in the early 20th century, Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-b-que will bring great food, live music and local flare to downtown Austin. The building: 217-221 Congress has an incredible history we can't wait to bring alive in the renovated space. The 200 block of Congress has been the home to several pubs, saloons, cafes and restaurants over the years including the Bradshaw Saloon, Pearlhouse Saloon, Tradewinds Lounge, The Dew Drop, Avenue Cafe, Las Manitas and Copa Lounge. Across the street was home to the International and Great Northern Rail Road Depot, built in 1888. The upstairs space at 217 was once the Travis Hotel, rumored to have been a cat house in years past! We plan to restore the facade to its original state to honor the location's eclectic history. Cooper's will feature a live music stage, a rooftop garden, and a beautiful oak-shaded back patio. Cooper's is bringing the food, feel and history of Texas to the table in the fall of 2014. We look forward to you joining us.
