Old Main is an academic building on the campus of Wayne State University. It is located at 4841 Cass Avenue in Midtown Detroit, Michigan, on Wayne's main campus.LocationOld Main is located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Cass and Warren Ave. in the busy Midtown area of Detroit. Old Main is situated at the southern end of the main campus of Wayne State University, across Warren from the Science Building and just north of the college's Hilberry Theater. It stands approximately 1.5 miles north of downtown Detroit, one block west of the city's main street, Woodward Avenue, and within less than a mile of three of Detroit's major freeways, the Chrysler (I-75), the Lodge (M-10), and the Ford (I-94).HistoryThe building now known as Old Main was originally built as Detroit's Central High School. Construction of the building began on December 13, 1894. It was built over a three-year period out of brick and limestone quarried from the land directly in front of it. The structure was designed by architects Malcomson & Higginbotham and contained 103 classrooms, laboratories, offices, and space for 2,000 students. The building cost $573,345.13, most of which was paid for by state appropriations and an emergency building fund campaign.
The Maccabees Building is a historic building located at 5057 Woodward Avenue in Midtown Detroit, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. and is currently owned by Wayne State University.The building consists of a five-story base which covers the entire site. The nine-story spine sits above this rising to a height of 197ft with ten-story wings buttressing each corner. The building's exterior resembles the letter "H" with this clearly evident on the fourth through tenth story floorplans.The high-rise truss tower features Art Deco and Romanesque details which include large arched windows on the ground and second level with rose windows accenting the second floor. Windows on the tenth and fourteenth floor are arched with decorative spandrel panels. The exterior is faced with limestone. The entrance is recessed in a three-story barrel vault arch which continues into the building to form the lobby ceiling.The central section is topped by a radio broadcast tower. This was originally the broadcast tower for WXYZ radio, and television, until the station moved to new facilities in 1959. WGPR radio now occupies transmission facilities on the tower, along with some data transmission equipment for Wayne State University. The height above ground to the tip of the antenna is 465.9ft.
The University Tower Apartments, the newest apartment building on campus, opened in 1995. This modern 11-story complex is located one block south of Forest Ave at the southern edge of main campus and just west of the School of Medicine. University Tower Apartments offers one, two and three bedroom units. Students who wish to live in University Towermust be at least 21 or junior standing.

Founded in 1868, WSU consists of 13 schools and colleges offering more than 380 programs to nearly 28,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Those classes evolved into the Detroit Junior College in 1917, the College of the City of Detroit in 1923 and now WSU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The Wayne State University School of Medicine currently hosts an enrollment of more than 1,000 medical students in undergraduate medical education, master’s degree, Ph.D., and M.D.-Ph.D. programs and courses encompass 14 areas of basic science. WSUSOM traces its roots through four predecessor institutions since its founding in 1868. According to U.S. News ranking, the school ranks 179d in its Research activities, and 85th in primary care.The Detroit College of Medicine was founded in 1868 in a building on Woodward Avenue. The Michigan College of Medicine was incorporated in 1879 and offered classes in the former Hotel Hesse at the intersection of Gratiot Avenue, Madison Avenue and St. Antoine Street. In 1885, the two schools merged to form the Detroit College of Medicine and occupied the former Michigan College of Medicine building. The college was reorganized and refinanced as the Detroit College of Medicine and Surgery in 1913, and five-years later, came under control of the Detroit Board of Education. In 1933, the Board of Education joined the Detroit College of Medicine and Surgery with the colleges of Liberal Arts, Education, Engineering, Pharmacy, and the Graduate School to form an institution of higher education called the Colleges of the City of Detroit. This was renamed Wayne University in 1934 and became a state-chartered institution, Wayne State University, in 1956. The First Congregational Church of Detroit was established in 1844. The first two church buildings were near the Detroit River. The church came to its present site on 33 E. Forest (at Woodward) in 1891. As a Christian community, located in the heart of Midtown Detroit, FCC provides in-house ministries, transformational learning experiences and missions programs to equip God's children to build God's kingdom in the earth. ETS encourages students to begin their training with a course in church and society, whose purpose is to examine how social position provides the foundations for beliefs and values. We provide opportunities for students to practice their beliefs within urban ministry settings, and to work with an outstanding faculty of academic and church leaders who serve as mentors for the journey.

The two churches along with St. Joseph Church (1828 Jay Street) were merged into Mother of Divine Mercy Parish on July 1, 2013. St. John’s Episcopal Church was organized in December of 1858. Our earliest members embodied the ingenuity and toughness of 19th century Detroit—business owners, merchants, craftsmen, soldiers, lumberjacks and farmers. Our diverse membership was woven into the fabric of the emerging city, and necessarily committed to the flourishing of Detroit. Our chapel was completed in 1859 and church building was completed in December of 1861. St. John's has seen our neighborhood change from farms and orchards to residential, to commercial, and then derelict. The tide began to turn with the renovation of the Fox Theatre, across the street from the Church. The Tigers new ballpark, Comerica Park, opened next door in 2000, and the Lions' Ford Field opened two blocks away in 2003. New housing also began to be built, but the recession in 2008, and subsequent City of Detroit bankruptcy in 2013, delayed or scuttled many projects. In 2014 development began again in earnest with the announcement of the ambitious District Detroit plan to spend $650 million to re-develop 50 square blocks of the neighborhood around St. John's. This project includes retail, residential, and the new Detroit Red Wings hockey arena opening in 2017. Through all the chances and changes of the neighborhood and metro Detroit, what has not changed has been the Faith in Jesus Christ for which our founders erected our glorious edifice. Attracting members from all of Metro Detroit, we are excited to be a part of the rebuilding of the neighborhood. In cooperation with our neighbors, we do Our Lord's work in the comprehensive social, cultural and spiritual renewal of Detroit.
