LOS ANGELES’ HISTORY ECHOES AT COLE’S, ORIGINATOR OF THE FRENCH DIP SANDWICH, housed since 1908 in the hollow of the Pacific Electric building, once the nucleus of the Pacific Electric railway network. At its peak, 100,000 Angelinos passed through the downtown hub daily, many of them stopping to sample the restaurant’s famed French Dips and cold pints. Cole’s, Los Angeles’ oldest public house, evokes the spirit of saloons that dotted the west in the early 1900’s. Original glass lighting, penny tile floors, historic photos, and the welcoming 40-foot mahogany Red Car Bar were preserved in the recent restoration of the cherished landmark, recipient of the Los Angeles Conservancy’s coveted Preservation Award recognizing outstanding achievement in the field of historic preservation. The Red Car’s ample selection of premium spirits, drafts, and historic cocktails compliment the saloon’s classic French dips. The Varnish at Cole’s, acclaimed for its perfectly executed classic cocktails opens Monday & Tuesday at 8pm and Wednesday through Sunday at 7pm.

Otium is a contemporary restaurant that draws from the rich culinary heritage and experiences of Timothy Hollingsworth. It is designed to be a social restaurant with an open kitchen merging indoor and outdoor spaces. Otium strips away the rigid formalities of dining while focusing on the quality of food, warm service, and relaxed casual ambience, paralleling the true essence of its name. Metro ExpressLanes is a pilot, one-year demonstration program overseen by Metro and Caltrans to improve mobility and sustainability on two of our busiest freeways in Los Angeles County. This program offers an innovative package of transit and roadway improvements to introduce congestion pricing as a new way to travel. Existing carpool lanes on I-10 (from I-605 to Alameda Street) and on I-110 (from SR91/Artesia Transit Center to Adams Boulevard) are being converted to High Occupancy Toll lanes known as Metro ExpressLanes. The general purpose lanes will not be tolled. The Metro ExpressLanes will offer reduced congestion and provide another travel option for solo drivers by paying a toll, while carpoolers that meet the occupancy requirements, transit, and motorcycles will continue to use the lanes toll free.
