PUBLIC WORKS "Givin' the People what they Want" a multifaceted event and community space in San Francisco's Mission District. Public Works consists of a performance/event space, bar, art gallery and artist work shop/community room. From DJ oriented Club Parties and live bands to independent film screenings,performance art and random creative Outbursts, Public Works is a Hangout, a Happening, an Adventure. The art gallery provides a space where the work of local SF based artists can mingle with both the up and coming art star and the budding savant. We encourage the growth of art and creativity in the Mission and San Francisco as a whole and are intent to provide a forum and a physical space for both. As part of our commitment to the Neighborhood we will donate a portion of our proceeds to various local non profits in addition to assisting them with promotions and events. Root Division ( http://rootdivision.org/ ) , a non profit which brings art classes to kids in schools that can't afford programs is a current beneficiary. The San Francisco Pretrial Diversion Project (SFPDP) was established in 1976 through the joint efforts of a group of socially conscious citizens, the San Francisco Bar Association and the Judges of the Municipal Courts. Their Experience had shown that most individuals charged with a misdemeanor offense did not benefit perceptibly by jail time. They were convinced that both the goals of crime prevention and rehabilitation would be better served by an alternative program of rehabilitation, education, and community service work. SFPDP was formed to provide “first time” misdemeanor offenders of non violent charges an opportunity to have their case dismissed by completing a program. Continuing our tradition and philosophy of “Dignity and Respect, Compassion and Accountability/” SFPDP added more programs design to address various needs of the Court, the Clients and the Community such as Court Accountable Case Management, Court Accountable Homeless Services, Community Involvement Team Yes!, The Navigator Project, Neighborhood Courts, No Violence Alliance, Own Recognizance, Pretrial Diversion, Project 20 / Project 22, & Supervised Pretrial Release
The EDC provides legal assistance to people who are in legal proceedings for eviction in San Francisco. This legal assistance includes guidance in the legal process of evictions, help in preparing papers for people to file in court, possible referrals to other legal resources, hands-on guidance during the settlement conference, and detailed coaching to prepare for a trial. The EDC doesn't provide the services of a lawyer; clients act as their own lawyer. The EDC charges a sliding scale fee for its services and payment plans are possible. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. We also provide a self help packet for people who need to respond to a Summons and are unable to use the EDC's services because of time or other constraints. The EDC can provide help for people living outside of San Francisco, but many of the services are limited. If you are behind in your rent, you may be able to avoid having an eviction filed against you. Our Rental Assistance Disbursement Component (RADCo) provides interest-free loans and grants to tenants residing in the City and County of San Francisco who have fallen behind in their rent due to a temporary financial setback. BCEF was founded in 2001 by AIDS Emergency Fund (AEF). Together, BCEF & AEF partner to maintain a very low administrative overhead. BCEF does not receive federal or public funding. We rely on the dedication of an extensive volunteer network and the generosity of many individuals, corporations and foundations. Our signature fundraising event, This Old Bag: The Power of the Purse raises one-quarter of BCEF's annual budget.
Over one billion people worldwide live in extreme poverty; the majority of them live in Sub-Saharan Africa and eke out a living as small-scale farmers. Many live on small plots of land and plant crops during the one or two rainy seasons hoping to grow enough to get them through the long dry and hungry season. Most grow the same rain-fed crops, harvest them at same time and sell them into the same markets, making just enough money to survive, but not enough to escape poverty. With irrigation, we know that farmers can safeguard their crops against drought and climatic emergencies, create sustainable, thriving small businesses by growing more and selling their crops at a profit, and effectively lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
Twenty years ago, Melissa Chittick and Stephen Salmons had a magnificent idea. They wanted to share their love of early cinema with the world and they knew that presenting silent films as they are meant to be seen—in beautiful prints on a big screen with live musical accompaniment—could thrill modern audiences. Today, their creation has outstripped their wildest dreams and grown into the largest and most prestigious silent film festival outside of Pordenone, Italy. Over the years, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival has become an internationally renowned destination for filmmakers, scholars, and movie lovers. Every year enthralled audiences partake of new discoveries and old favorites accompanied by the likes of the Matti Bye Ensemble, Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, Alloy Orchestra, Stephen Horne, Donald Sosin, and Dennis James on the Castro Theatre’s world-famous Mighty Wurlitzer organ. In the last 20 years, the festival has presented more than 150 rare and classic silent films, all with live music performed by the most accomplished composers and musicians in the field. We have published over 140 original essays by local writers and key figures in silent-film history, preservation, and music, and we have supported film preservation efforts by exhibiting major restorations, as well as by direct funding and a fellowship for emerging archivists. The Festival has commissioned new scores that have set a new standard for excellence in film accompaniment. Every summer—and during special events throughout the year—the Festival brings authors, archivists, and filmmakers to the stage to help audiences appreciate the history, preservation, and continuing influence and importance of these early works of cinema art.
SFGFF is the city's leading movement for films & conversations about people and the planet. The Specialists Guild is supported by donations and by providing services to San Francisco Bay area companies. We train people on the Autism Spectrum to provide services , such as software testing, data entry and graphic design, to local companies with the goal to successfully transition them into open market positions.
Taja Gabrielle de Jesus was a beautiful soul who was unapologetically unafraid to always be herself. She had an infectious energy that, combined with her sweet nature, made her a delight to everyone whose path she crossed. And when she did cross your path, she always had a story to share. It might have made you laugh or it might have made you cry, but it was always truly, authentically her. She was well loved by everyone for her kind heart, inspirational spirit and impeccable style–she loved to rock those flashy outfits. On Sunday, February 1, Taja was brutally stabbed and became the 5th trans woman to be murdered in the US in 2015. That’s more than one murder a week. And all of them were women of color. She is also the fourth trans woman of color in California to be murdered in the last four months. We must put an end to this continual dynamic. It saddens and angers us every time someone from our community is taken from us. It devastates us when it’s someone we know and love. The Trans* Activists for Justice and Accountability Coalition (“TAJA”) is united in anger and outrage over her murder. TAJA’s Coalition includes leadership from: TGI Justice Project, El/La Para Translatinas, Trans March, Community United Against Violence, Transgender Law Center, St. James Infirmary, The SF LGBT Center, Trans Employment Program (TEEI), TRANS:THRIVE at the API Wellness Center, Dimensions Clinic, Center of Excellence for Transgender Health, and Trans Life at the SF AIDS Foundation.
