Olvera Street is in the oldest part of Downtown Los Angeles, California, USA, and is part of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument. Many of the Plaza District's Historic Buildings are on Olvera Street, including the Avila Adobe (1818), the Pelanconi House (1857), and the Sepulveda House (1887). The tree-shaded, pedestrian mall marketplace with craft shops, restaurants and roving troubadours is a popular tourist destination.HistoryEarly daysLos Angeles was founded in 1781 by Spanish pobladores (settlers), on a site southeast of today's Olvera Street near the Los Angeles River. They consisted of 11 families — 44 men, women, and children — and were accompanied by a few Spanish soldiers. They had come from nearby Mission San Gabriel Arcángel to establish a secular pueblo on the banks of the Porciúncula River at the Indian village of Yang-na. The new town was named El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles. Priests from San Gabriel established an asistencia (a sub-mission), the Nuestra Señora Reina de los Angeles Asistencia, to tend to their religious needs. The pueblo eventually built its own parish church, known today as the "Old Plaza Church." Unpredictable flooding forced the settlers to abandon the original site and move to higher ground in the early 1800s.

Avila Adobe

Los Angeles, CA 90012

The Avila Adobe was built in 1818 by Francisco Avila and has the distinction of being the oldest standing residence in Los Angeles, California. It is located in the paseo of historical Olvera Street, a part of Los Angeles Plaza Historic District, a California State Historic Park. The building itself is registered as California Historical Landmark #145, while the entire historic district is both listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The Plaza is the third location of the original Spanish settlement El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles sobre el Río Porciúncula, the first two having been washed out by flooding from the swollen Río Porciúncula (Los Angeles River). The Avila Adobe was one of the settlement's first houses to share street frontage in the Pueblo de Los Angeles of Spanish colonial Alta California. The walls of the Avila Adobe are 2.5- thick and are built from sun-baked adobe bricks. The original ceilings were 15ft high and supported by beams of cottonwood, which was available along the banks of the Los Angeles River. Though the roof appears slanted today, the original roof was flat. Tar (Spanish: brea) was brought up from the La Brea Tar Pits, located near the north boundary line of Avila's Rancho Las Cienegas. The tar was mixed with rocks and horsehair, a common binder in exterior building material, and applied to beams of the roof as a sealant from inclement weather.

IAO’s work embraces three primary areas of intent: We Innovate by creating an environment that encourages new exploration of the olfactive arts, fostering discussion and experience of scent through strategic cross-discipline projects, and by providing space for experimentation in our Perfumers’ Lab. Similarly, we facilitate new creative practices spanning the popular and fine arts through project-based residency and research programs. We Educate by generating greater public awareness of scent and perfumery and by helping emergent perfumers gain greater knowledge, exposure and skills. As well, we inform the public about social and scientific issues that impact the art form. We do this by offering ongoing series of classes and workshops, and through a public speaking series. We Support by advancing the art of perfumery and the work of independent scent creators through business mentorships and creative partnerships, and with our ongoing creative residency programs in our Los Angeles chief facility. In 2013 we launched the Art and Olfaction Awards, an awards mechanism devoted to promoting and advancing independent and artisan perfumers. More information can be found at artandolfactionawards.com

The Good Luck Gallery

Los Angeles, CA 90012

(213) 625-0935

The Good Luck Gallery, located in the heart of the Chinatown arts district, is the only gallery in Los Angeles to specialize in self-taught art. Whether it is called Outsider, Folk Art, Naive or Visionary, the emphasis is on artists who are driven by a compulsive need to create and who work beyond the margins of the traditional art world. The gallery is owned and curated by Paige Wery, who brings twenty years of experience and a passion for intuitive art to the venture. For six years she was the publisher of Artillery, Southern California’s premier art magazine. The Good Luck Gallery – which opened in 2014 – brings attention to the purity and vitality of work that speaks for itself, without formal training or need of critical interpretation. Established artists are shown, as well as the emerging and overlooked, and every form of art – from painting, drawing and sculpture to performance and installations – will be on display. In addition to regular gallery shows, an online shop features paintings, ceramics, thrift store finds, handmade arts and crafts, as well as zines and literature.

Drawing Room for Kids
Distance: 0.1 mi Competitive Analysis
945 Chung King Rd
Los Angeles, CA 90012

(213) 687-3113

We’re going to create a gallery show of fine art prints of drawings and paintings created by kids. Children's art often gets overlooked because, like all other art, exceptional pieces can get lost in a sea of less interesting ones. Kids usually draw on inexpensive paper which can get dirty and smudged; the paints, crayons and colored pencils used are also not so great; sometimes there are several paintings or drawings on the same piece of paper, and you have to pick and choose the best ones. We’re going to curate kids' art the same way any gallery curates "grown-up" art. We'll photograph the chosen pieces, perform basic color and contrast corrections, clean them up, print them on museum quality watercolor paper and frame them professionally. On August 25 from 5 to 9 pm – during Chinatown Summer Nights – we’ll host a Drawing Room For Kids at the Gallery at 945 Chung King Road. Any child will be welcome to come in and draw as much as they want. There will be crayons, colored pencils, markers and an endless supply of paper on hand. If they choose to participate, their artwork will be considered for a gallery exhibition. The best work - curated by Mat Gleason of Coagula Gallery and Magazine and gallery owner Ed Freeman among others – will be included in a show that will open later in the year. Proceeds from sales will be divided among the artists, the gallery and Chinatown Service Center's Youth Program for the Arts.

Self made hustler is a company that represents the men, women, and children that BELIEVE in themselves to pursue their passions and dreams. For the ones who were called dreamers and were told to give up. For those who failed and chose persistence. For the ones who aren’t phased by the negativity of others. For those that are bullied into believing they are less than, but continue to stand against the grain. For the ones who make their dreams a reality, and especially for those left with no choice but to dream. We believe in supporting the SELF MADE HUSTLER. The person that hustles daily and never loses sight of their dream or creating a better future for themselves. Our product makes a statement to the world. “It speaks for itself” is one of our mottoes at SMH because our product truly speaks for itself, from the name to the quality. Wearing SMH Product will make a statement in fashion, as well as in the day-to-day lifestyle of anyone. As the great Steve jobs said, “Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
