The Rice University Office of STEM Engagement (R-STEM) supports and promotes Rice’s wide-ranging efforts to improve K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Houston-area school districts. R-STEM is the central point of contact at Rice for all STEM-related outreach and education efforts toward school districts, parents, students, nonprofits and others. We promote science awareness by supporting Rice faculty and students, as well as K-12 educators, who are developing STEM-related educational outreach programs. In collaboration with the Office of Vice Provost for Research, we facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations, professional development workshops for teachers, and collaborations between scientific and educational communities that integrate authentic research and practices. Because of the amplified impact of teachers on student learning, the major focus of our program is to provide comprehensive professional development to elementary and secondary science teachers through year-long professional development in inquiry science. What distinguishes R-STEM’s programs from other professional development training programs are the broad impact in terms of teachers and school districts served, and the deep focus on science content and constructivist pedagogy. The R-STEM program: *empowers teacher leaders for campus-wide improvement of STEM learning *provides insights into cutting-edge STEM research *enriches and deepens teacher mastery of science, math, engineering, and technology content and state standards (TEKS) *supports the exploration and implementation of best practices *provides more than $1000 of materials to campuses for each participant *facilitates teacher development through campus support and mentoring *offers a range of enrichment activities for past participants (Catalyst events) The content of all R-STEM programs is highly aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). R-STEM provides programs for elementary, middle, and high school science teachers in the Greater Houston area. We also run summer programs for middle and high school students, internships for high school, community college students and teachers, and we host campus tours for teachers in our programs.

Religion and Public Life Program at Rice University

(713) 348-4132

Launched in 2010, the Religion and Public Life Program is part of Rice University’s Institute for Urban Research. It is directed by Elaine Howard Ecklund, an assistant professor of sociology and a Baker Institute for Public Policy Rice Scholar at Rice University. The Religion and Public Life Program provides an interdisciplinary platform for bridging the gap between the best religion scholarship and the various constituencies that might benefit from that scholarship. Conversations about the role of religion in our lives—whether the topic is embryonic stem cell research, American foreign policy in the Middle East, immigrant rights, or religious expression in the political or business world—often become divisive in language and rhetoric, as groups on different sides of an issue often create myths about one another. Our hope is to help these groups fully understand one another’s perspective. We are beginning with a focus on how religion interfaces with medicine, science, and education. Program Initiatives: Books in Public Scholarship — a forum for scholars to review and discuss forthcoming books on religion that are poised to make a big public impact. Reading Religion at Rice — a gathering of scholars to review drafts of scholarly articles on issues related to religion and public life that are highly relevant to particular constituencies. Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship — a one- to two-year fellowship for recent college graduates who want to participate in scholarly and public conversations about religion and plan to work in areas such as law, academia, or public policy. Semi-Annual Lectureship — a biannual event bringing together scholars from various sectors and perspectives to engage in civil conversation on issues related to religion and public life. Undergraduate Student Fellowship — a one- to two-semester fellowship for students working on research with Dr. Ecklund, providing them with the opportunity to participate in program planning and execution, and host program guests.
