HISTORY The Institute was founded by members of St. Michael’s Church team ministry in 2001 as a long-term solution to violence. Originally a training organization, the Institute hired its first Executive Director in 2001 and the Streetworkers program was introduced in 2003. Since then, a constellation of programs has grown to better serve the community’s most vulnerable youth and families whose lives have been affected by violence. Today the organization has a $1.8 million budget, a board of 30 members and a staff of 32. THE NEED Providence is one of the poorest cities for children in the nation, and poverty level correlates to rates of violence. There are estimated to be over 1,400 gang members in the city. A 2009 survey of youth in the Institute’s summer jobs program revealed that nearly 50% of the respondents had lost a family member to murder; 75% had lost a friend to violence; 90% had a friend who was stabbed or shot; nearly 90% said they regularly witness violence in their schools. PROGRAMS Noviolence Training directly teaches the principles and practices of nonviolence to students, police officers, inmates, and community members. Annually trains new trainers to work in schools and other settings. Streetworkers provide advocacy and mentoring, and act as a positive presence in the streets and in the lives of gang-involved or at-risk youth. They build relationships, gather information and mediate conflicts to prevent violence. They respond to stabbings, shootings and homicides. Youth Programs provide positive opportunities for youth in the form of employment, life skills training, leadership development, and safe-space and awareness-raising events. Victim Support Services reaches out to provide services to families and friends of homicide victims, as well as living victims of stabbings and shootings. Juvenile Reentry provides a family-centered approach and case management to releasees from the RI Training School referred by Probation and Parole Officers.
At Highlander Charter School, students get individual attention, build lasting bonds, and use customized plans to learn in the ways that are most effective for them. Highlander is an urban charter school with 274 students in grades pre-K-6 located in the heart of Providence, and 260 students in grades 7-12 located on 42 acres in Warren. It offers all the benefits of a private school – small classes, diverse populations, individual attention from teachers – in a public school setting. With small sized classes, the diversity of each student at Highlander is celebrated. Each student works with teachers specially trained to help students, even those with learning differences, master reading and math. Together, students and teachers develop individualized learning plans that help students acquire the skills they need while learning about things that really interest them. Highlander’s high school has moved from seat time requirements to competency based in an effort to provide all students with the skills they need to progress to completion. Through close involvement with the community and parents volunteering their time, Highlander Charter School is a place where kids come early, stay late, and build the educational foundation they need to succeed.

McAuley Ministries is an independent non-profit organization sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, whose work is rooted in the ideals of their founder, Catherine McAuley. McAuley Ministries includes McAuley House, a meal site and house of hospitality for the hungry or homeless; McAuley Village, a transitional housing program for homeless single-parent families; and The Warde-robe, a volunteer-supported thrift store offering quality used clothing and household goods to those in need. McAuley Village has an on-site, licensed child care center for infants, toddlers and pre-school age children. The pre-school is a Head Start provider.

The United States has developed a preoccupation with incarceration. With over two million people incarcerated, the U S is home to the world’s highest incarceration rate. Even China and Russia—hardly bastions of liberty and civil rights— have lower numbers of prisoners. We hold the unenviable distinction of being the "incarcerator in-chief." Over seven million people are under some form of DOC supervision; a dis- proportionate number are people of color. The infamous "War on Drugs/ Crime" is a war on race and class . This is a CIVIL RIGHTS Issue. With many policies driven to punish rather than by knowledge of what improves community safety, and with politics and profit playing a major role, the criminal justice system costs too much and isn’t fair. America can hardly boast that it houses 25% of the world's prisoners, when it only has 5% of the world's population. As a result of a nearly four-fold increase in inmates since the 80's, the DOC spends in excess of $80 billion annually. The incarceration rate has declined by just over 1% per year since 2011, yet at that pace it will take nearly another century to revert to pre- Regan "Drug War" years. Recidivism refers to the revolving door that seems to plague the US justice system. Over 40 percent of inmates re-offend within one year of their release — 67.5% recidivate within three years. Those statistics remain unchanged for over a decade. Is this really the America we have envisioned for our children and their children?
WIC recipients show higher birth weight, lower infant mortality, improved blood iron levels and diets, improved brain and neurological development, and lower use of intensive care nurseries compared to infants born to lower income mothers that have not benefited from proper nutritional food supplements.
Women's Development Corporation (WDC) WDC is one of the largest nonprofit housing developers in Rhode Island and an innovator in the design, development, construction and management of housing for low to moderate income families, the elderly and persons with special needs. WDC reclaims and restores historic buildings, constructs new, energy efficient housing and revitalizes neighborhoods with a combination of federal, state and private financing. Wdc also provides rental and home ownership opportunities. In 1979, WDC was founded by professional women with expertise in architecture and design, community planning and historic preservation. WDC achieves a high level of efficiency by completing developments on time and within budget. WDC’s thoughtfulness in design ensures that buildings fit within a neighborhood and are functional and attractive. Housing Opportunities Corporation (HOC) Founded in 1983, HOC is a nonprofit property management corporation. Although a separate corporation, HOC is a WDC affiliate and serves as the developer's management arm. WDC and HOC believe comprehensive property management is a critical component in a project from the initial planning stages throughout the property's ongoing life. As a result, HOC provides resourceful, skilled, firm, and responsive 'hands-on' property management during the development of the property – to ensure quality, permanent housing for families, the elderly and groups with special needs –and every day thereafter – to protect against its disinvestment.

Women Refugee Care aims: - To promote gender equality and to empower fellow refugees women; - Advocate and support vulnerable groups of women with the principle of: "If you give me a fish, I eat in one day but if you teach me to fish, I eat always." - Promote the development of economic projects and positive actions in favor of children and women; - Fight malnutrition and undernourishment by entertainment and education sessions, healthy eating and balanced diet also health education, body hygiene instruction; agriculture methods of livestock and fishing trough its programs health and agro pastoral; - Fight against girl juvenile delinquency with schooling projects; - Build a pilot school for girls from poor families in the Congo; - Follow up refugees students in accordance with teachers, social workers and principals in school to build a bridge between parents and schools; - Support the children from poor families by paying their school fees, particularly case of distress affecting children and women in any unanticipated circumstance in relation to rights of children and women.
