Los Angeles, CA 90013

L.A. Dance Project is an artist collective founded in 2012 by renowned choreographer and dancer Benjamin Millepied, along with composer Nico Muhly, art consultant Matthieu Humery, Founding Producer Charles Fabius and Nicholas Britell. L.A. Dance Project’s mission is to create new work and to revive seminal collaborations from influential dance makers. Programs include full-length evenings in traditional theater venues as well as various modular performances in non-traditional environments. New works by the company endeavor to be multidisciplinary collaborations with various artists: visual artists, musicians, designers, directors and composers. L.A. Dance Project promotes the work of emerging and established creators, contributing to new platforms for contemporary dance. L.A. Dance Project’s inaugural performance, commissioned by The Music Center was held at Walt Disney Concert Hall on September 22, 2012. The company’s most recent premiere of the new work Reflections by Benjamin Millepied took place at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on April 23, 2013. In addition to the time it spends at its home base in Los Angeles, L.A. Dance Project will continue to tour at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam, Istanbul, Spoleto Festival in Italy, Edinburgh International Festival, La Maison de la Danse in Lyon, France and Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London. Renae Williams Niles, Director of Programming for the Music Center, says, "We are extremely honored to be able to further our commitment to supporting new exploration with esteemed artists by working with Benjamin on his first Los Angeles based project. He has established himself as one of the world's most commissioned choreographers and for him to make a commitment of creating new work right here bringing together local and internationally renowned artists was worthy of support. For the Music Center to play this significant national and international role allows us to achieve our goals of leadership in a phenomenally influential way." Born in Bordeaux France, Benjamin Millepied began his dance training at the age of eight with his mother Catherine, a former modern dancer. From age thirteen to sixteen, he attended the Conservatoire National de Lyon. In the summer of 1992, Millepied made his first appearance in New York City, for a summer program at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet. The following year, he became a full-time student at the school, having received the "Bourse Lavoisier," a scholarship award from the French Ministry of Culture. In the 1994 at the School of American Ballet Spring Workshop, Millepied originated a principal role in Jerome Robbins' "2 & 3 Part Inventions" set to music by J.S Bach. That same year, he was awarded the "Prix de Lausanne." In his last year at SAB, Millepied received the Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise and was invited to become a member of New York City Ballet. In the spring of 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Principal Dancer. In addition to dancing, Millepied has also choreographed ballets for numerous companies around the world, including three works for NYCB - "Quasi Una Fantasia" (2009), "Why am I not where you are?" (2010), and "Plainspoken" (2010). For NYCB's 2012 Spring Season, Millepied will create a world premiere ballet to a commissioned score by Nico Muhly, a frequent collaborator, which will premiere at the Company's Spring Gala performance on May 10, 2012. During his career at NYCB, Millepied has originated roles in ballets choreographed by Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, Helgi Tomasson, Mauro Bigonzetti, Boris Eifman, and Angelin Preljocaj, among others. He has also danced featured roles in numerous ballets including Balanchine's "Agon," "A Midsummer Night's Dream"(Oberon), "Rubies" from "Jewels," and "Symphony in C," Robbins' "Dances at a Gathering," "Dybbuk," "Fancy Free," and "West Side Story Suite" and Martins' "Fearful Symmetries," "Jeu de Cartes," and "Swan Lake." In addition to the three ballets created for NYCB, Millepied has also choreographed works for American Ballet Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Danses Concertantes, The Mariinsky, Het Nationale Ballet, Grande Theatre de Geneve, and Ballet de Genève, among others. He has also collaborated with a range of composers including Philip Glass, Nico Muhly, David Lang, Daniel Ott, and Thierry Escaich, as well as designers such as Rodarte, Paul Cox, Marc Jacobs and Santiago Calatrava. In addition, in 2010, Millepied choreographed and appeared in Darren Aronofsky's feature film "Black Swan." Millepied also directed the Morriss Center Dance Workshop in Bridgehampton, New York in 2004 and 2005. From 2006 to 2007, he was choreographer-in-residence at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, and in 2007 he received the United States Artists Wynn Fellowship. In 2010, he was made Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture. Millepied recently retired from New York City Ballet to concentrate on his choreography. Australia Day
Distance: 0.2 mi Competitive Analysis
Raleighs Film Studios Hollywood
Los Angeles, CA 90013

Among Australian public holidays, Australia Day is considered one of the most important Australian Public Holidays as it commemorates the founding of the first white settlement in Australia in 1788. On May 13, 1787, British Captain Arthur Phillip set sail from Portsmouth, England, to establish a convict colony in Australia. He sailed with 11 ships, 759 convicts - 191 of who were female - 13 children of convicts, 211 marines, 46 wives and children of marines, and his staff of nine. Phillip landed at Botany Bay on the eastern coast of Australia on January 18, 1788, travelled some kilometers north to find a more suitable place for settlement and came ashore at Sydney Cove on January 26 in what is now the historic Rocks area at the southern end of today's Sydney Harbour Bridge. Sore point for Aborigines Having established Port Jackson, he then named the settlement Sydney after British Home Secretary Lord Sydney, who was responsible for the colony. Phillip was to be its governor. This date — January 26 — is now commemorated yearly as Australia Day, but while it is a day that weaves together the past and present of a great land and its people, its celebration is a sore point for some of Australia's Aboriginal community who consider they were invaded by the British on that day in 1788. It is believed that the first Aborigines started arriving in Australia in 50,000 BC, and the arrival of the British more than 51,000 years later was clearly an invasion of their land. And yet, there are those Australians who consider and accept Australia Day as a day of possible reconciliation between those people who were here in the Dreamtime and those who came later.... Still there are calls for a change in the date of Australia Day. How far the country has come Today, around Sydney Cove stand the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the hub of bus, rail and harbour transport that is Circular Quay, and the historic Rocks area where Governor Phillip's first settlement had its roots. A stone's throw away is Darling Harbour, now a major tourist site, with its Sydney Powerhouse and National Maritime Museums, paved promenade areas, gardens, and shopping and entertainment precincts. One only has to look at Sydney today to see how far the country has come. Modern Australia's birthplace, this is where Australia Day has its focus, and it is here that the years the nation has traveled is more easily discernible in the almost magical mix of Australia's historic past and its developing present. Our Mission PACE Business Development Center is a local, non-profit organization that aims to advance the wealth of our communities by giving individuals the tools to develop sustainable businesses and successfully manage their personal finances. Our History PACE Business Development Center aspires to develop the potential of the diverse Los Angeles community by empowering small business owners with the knowledge, tools and resources necessary to successfully tap the market and achieve their dreams. Although initially launched to provide entrepreneurship training classes for low-income individuals, PACE BDC has since recognized the growing need to serve a broad spectrum of business owners in the market. To this end, we currently provide a variety of services for low-moderate small business owners and minority communities, to not only start up, but also expand, their businesses. PACE Business Development Center Today PACE BDC continues to operate programs that inspire and serve aspiring entrepreneurs, small business owners, and refugees & asylees in Los Angeles County. Currently we operate two Los Angeles Business Assistance Programs (East & West) which allowed our Center to expand our services to cover a larger area of the City; in 2009 we renewed the funding for our Women’s Business Center program so that we can continue to offer programs and services targeted to women entrepreneurs; and we received funding from the SBA’s Project for Investment in Entrepreneurship in order to continue to serve the needs of entrepreneurs and small business owners in the San Gabriel Valley. Furthermore, after recognizing the importance that personal finances and credit have on the success of a business, the BDC established our Asset Building Center in 2005 and have continued to expand the services offered with the support of HSBC and the United Way of Los Angeles. The Asset Building Center provides financial education training, credit counseling, homebuyer education and tax preparation services to the low-to-moderate income communities that we serve. Finally, our most recent development is the establishment of the PACE SBA Micro-Loan Program, which enables us to make loans from $500 to $15,000 to our own clients. This is a very exciting and important addition to our services as we are now able to train, counsel, and finance the businesses that come through our doors. Regardless of your needs or your stage of business, PACE BDC is proud to say that we have developed the resources to be able to address your concerns.
