In 1923, the campus of University High School was built for children of faculty of the University of California in Berkeley. The campus closed during World War II, but was reopened as the Merritt School of Business in 1946. In 1954, the Oakland Unified School District, then operating the Merritt campus and the Laney Trade and Technical School, formed Oakland Junior College (later renamed Oakland City College). In 1960, the same year as the opening of Skyline High School, OUSD decided to relocated Merritt College from Grove Street to the hills of East Oakland.

Mills College is a liberal arts and sciences college located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mills was founded as the Young Ladies Seminary in 1852 in Benicia, California. The school was relocated to Oakland, California, in 1871, and became the first women's college west of the Rockies. Currently, Mills is an undergraduate women's college with graduate programs for women and men. The college offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and minors and over 25 graduate degrees, certificates, and credentials. The college is the also home to the Mills College School of Education and the Lorry I. The inviting F. W. Olin Library houses a collection of over 240,000 volumes and other media supporting the curricular needs of the College, with special emphases on literature, history, women's studies, art, and music. The interior of the building was designed with comfort and accessibility in mind and includes study and workstations of appealing variety, a listening-viewing room with fully equipped audiovisual stations, and a seminar room. Computer workstations are available throughout the library to access library databases, the Internet, email, or word processing. Library facilities are fully wheelchair-accessible, and special services for disabled students are available. The library is also home to the Special Collections of 12,000 volumes and 10,000 manuscripts, including a copy of Shakespeare's First Folio, a Mozart manuscript, and a leaf from a Gutenberg Bible. Housed in the Heller Rare Book Room, the collections include printed books from the 15th century to the present, as well as the Mills College Collection. It is also the home of the Mills Center for the Book, a forum for cultural, literary, and aesthetic heritage of the book. The library is open 88.5 hours a week during the semester. Reference librarians are available until 9:00 pm most weekdays and until 6:00 pm Sundays to help students organize their research efforts and make the best use of library resources. Library staff also teach students how to find and use bibliographic and electronic resources pertinent to specific needs or assignments.

Located across the bay from San Francisco, the Kodály Center for Music Education is located on the campus of Holy Names University. Holy Names offers a MMus in music education with small classes, personalized training and internationally renowned faculty from the US and Hungary. In addition to the MMus, Holy Names also offers an annual Summer Institute that provides intensive teacher training over the span of three weeks with faculty from Hungary, the US and Australia.

Staffed by graduate English students, The Place for Writers is central to the graduate experience at Mills College. Less a place than a community, The Place produces a roving series of programs and readings, including the Works in Progress reading series, the Contemporary Writers Series, interdisciplinary performances, conferences and panels on publishing and teaching, and, for the first time this year, a collaborative community dinner and poetry reading. California Concordia College existed in Oakland, California from 1906 until 1973.Among the presidents of California Concordia College was Johann Theodore Gotthold Brohm Jr.California Concordia College and the Academy of California College were located at 2365 Camden Street, Oakland, Ca. Part of the school buildings still exist at this location and the baseball field looks the same. The stately ancient buildings that housed the earlier classrooms and later the dormitories are gone. The flag pole that once displayed the American flag still stands, but no flag is shown in photographs taken in 2015. The site of the former California Concordia College is now the site of a Spectrum SchoolThe "Academy" was the official name for the high school. California Concordia was a 6-year institution patterned after the German Gymnasium. It was 4 years of what in America is called high school, plus 2 year of junior college. Years in the school took their names from Latin numbers. The numbers referred to the years to go before graduation.The classes were named:Sexta (6 years to go) -- Freshman, Qunita (5 years to go) Quarta (4 tears to go) Tertia (3 years to go) Secunda (2 years to go) Prima (1 year to go)Fuchsing. Those in Sexta were usually hazed in a mild way by upperclassmen. In addition, those in Sexta were required to do a certain amount of "clean-up" work around the school, picking up trash for example. Freshman were referred to as Fuchs. Fuchs is German for fox. To hear the pronunciation of fuchs see this website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcT5XTt9Vec Fuchs means fox. The hazing of freshman was referred to as fuchsing.Most students, even high school freshman lived in dormitories, High school students were supervised by "proctors" (selected high school seniors in Tertia),) High school students were required to study for 2 hours each night in their study rooms from 7::00pm to 9:00pm. Students could not leave their rooms for any reason without permission. This requirement came as quite a shock to those in sexta (freshmen) on their first night, when they were caught and scolded by a proctor when they left their study room to go to the bathroom without permission.

What Is EOPS? The Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) is a state funded program enacted by legislation passed in 1969 by the Assembly of the California State Legislature. It is designed to ensure campus access and provide support services to students who face economic, language, and social barriers and who are historically under-represented in higher education. EOPS is committed to assisting students who participate in the program in the successful attainment of their educational and career goals as today's students prepare to enter an increasingly technological and multicultural society. Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) is a program within EOPS that is designed to help single-parent students succeed in college. Degrees and Certificates in Environmental Management and Technology The Environmental Management and Technology program offers two Associates of Science degrees and one Certificate of Proficiency in three areas: Ecological Restoration, Ranger, Naturalist and Outdoor Education; Greening the Urban Environment; and Urban Agroecology. The Ecological Restoration degree offers students an introductory background in environmental stewardship, including land management and natural and cultural history outdoor interpretation and education. Greening the Urban Environment introduces students to the technical, ecological, social and planning fundamentals of sustainable construction projects. Urban Agroecology offers the fundamentals of urban food production on small (home garden) and large (school and community garden or farm). Outdoors, Hands-On, Academic Learning There is a wide range of employment and entrepreneurial opportunities opening in the emerging environmental and sustainability fields. The Environmental Management and Technology program introduces the major sectors of the “Green Wave” for those interested in pursuing careers in this area, transferring to a four-year institution, or understanding the background of climate change, environmental policy, city and regional planning, food security, green building, environmental education, environmental justice, renewable energy, native plant and ecosystem restoration, watersheds, pollution, recycling, and waste management. This program will help you choose an environmental field to pursue. We offer small classes taught by professionals in the field, in a relaxed atmosphere. The program offers evening and weekend courses each semester to accommodate the schedules of working adults. In Japan, teachers improve their teaching through "lesson study," a process in which teachers jointly plan, observe, analyze, and refine actual classroom lessons called "research lessons". Lesson study is widely credited for the steady improvement of Japanese elementary mathematics and science instruction. Since 1999, lesson study has rapidly emerged in many sites across the United States.

Mills Teacher Scholars supports teams of urban public school teachers to conduct teacher-led inquiry on their practice. Teacher teams meet monthly with MTS staff to pursue their year-long inquiry work. Teachers frame a question about their students' learning, select focal students, collect and collaboratively analyze student work data, and adjust their teaching in response to their new understandings about their students' learning. In 2012-2013 MTS will support the inquiry work of over 100 Oakland East Bay teachers.

SAW, or the Summer Academic Workshop, is a program dedicated to the leadership development and academic growth of first generation students attending Mills College. Our workshops are geared toward helping students develop necessary college skills to excel in and outside the classroom. The first part of the Workshop entails a rigorous four weeks of classes taught by highly respected Mills faculty, and workshops on study skills, computer technology, and academic writing. The second part of the program aims to support students though both academic and personal challenges by providing tutoring, mentoring, and academically related workshops and seminars throughout students' four years at Mills College.

JMSG opened its doors in the Fall of 1999. The Founders believed a girls' school would enable girls to develop their individual voices and acquire the intellectual and social tools to realize their full potential.

Mills Dance is at the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area's large and dynamic urban dance community. Launched in 1938 as one of the first and most visionary dance programs in the country, dance at Mills uniquely trains students to be both artist-thinkers and refined practitioners competent in multiple dance idioms. The curriculum is designed to develop each dancer's technical, performance, and choreographic abilities while urging students to seek creative inspiration in the world around them. Within the broad context of liberal arts, students study dance history and theory and are introduced to some of the fundamental philosophical ideas of dance and culture studies. Dance majors develop expertise in three areas: technique, choreography, and history/theory. Each arena is arranged progressively, allowing students to move from elementary to advanced levels in contemporary modern dance and ballet, the department's core areas of practice. Choreography classes are designed to become increasingly complex and varied over the course of study, while dance history and theory are arrayed chronologically, with knowledge building upon prior knowledge, preparing students for graduate studies should they wish. In a program with a robust dance practice, dancers at Mills have many opportunities to perform their own work or the work of students, professors, and visiting artists in the Mills Repertory Dance Company (MRDC) concerts. Additional opportunities arise from BA and MFA thesis concerts. Undergraduates also benefit by working closely with the College's small, committed group of MFA and/or MA students. The Dance Department also forges new and ongoing collaborations with renowned dance artists of the Bay Area, affording students opportunities to work with esteemed local organizations. National guest artists are also invited to Mills to offer master classes and to choreograph for the annual Repertory Company season.
