Oakland Medical Center, also known as Kaiser Oakland, is a hospital located in Oakland, California, United States, at the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Broadway, immediately above downtown Oakland. It is the flagship hospital of Kaiser Permanente, the largest managed care organization in the United States, through its Kaiser Foundation Hospitals division.HistoryThe Oakland Medical Center was the first of the Kaiser Permanente hospitals, and opened in 1942 as a result of the acquisition of the Fabiola charity hospital (which operated from 1887-1932 before being sold to Samuel Merritt Hospital) by the Permanente Foundation, founded by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and physician Sidney Garfield. This was the first modern Health maintenance organization (HMO) hospital after the experiment of using an HMO model was found to be successful among the 90,000 Richmond Kaiser Shipyards workers in the Richmond, California, Field Hospital. Several additions and renovations followed over the decades, notably a signature 12-story, 420-bed tower which opened in 1973.

The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland was started in 1978 to deliver comprehensive care to children and adults with sickle cell disease. The sickle cell center grew quickly and was funded by the National Institutes of Health as one of ten Comprehensive Sickle Cell Centers in the country. The center has been active in research nationally, conducting large multi-center trials in sickle cell disease and internationally, providing our expertise to programs abroad. Sickle cell disease is complex and requires a comprehensive approach. The care at Children's Hospital is all inclusive, focusing on patients and their families through all of the stages of their lives - from infancy, through adolescence, to a successful adulthood. While pediatric and adult programs have separate staffs, there are also shared staff who bridge the transition to adult care. Center providers are experts in sickle cell disease, transfusion medicine, and bone marrow transplantation. Our hemoglobinopathy laboratory confirms all hemoglobin disorders results for the State of California Newborn Screening Program, and sets standards for other national and international laboratories. Our center collaborates in national studies to promote better treatment for sickle cell disease and is recognized as an innovator for new therapies.

Overview: Legacy Evolution’s Father Rootz Project uses group therapy to build accountability to self, family, and community within each participant. This accountability is the key component to fostering health within relationships. The curriculum utilizes both psycho-education and a process group format to teach and integrate healthy parenting and self-awareness. Through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, the treatment allows participants to practice achieving small goals, thereby experiencing success. The program raises participant awareness of familial patterns, stressors, emotional triggers, and their impact on family dynamics. Secondly the program directs participant attention and practice towards emotional regulation, listening, and communications skills within relationships. Lastly, the program reinforces social support, and strengthens the participants’ sense of emotional intimacy with their families and community. This curriculum was created and is implemented by an experienced MFT intern with 13 years of experience in the community. Atiim Boykin was raised in East Oakland, received a Bachelor’s in both Pan African studies and Sociology, and a Master’s in Counseling Psychology.
