The University of South Dakota is a public coeducational research university located in the small town community of Vermillion, South Dakota. USD was established by the Dakota Territory legislature in 1862, 37 years before the establishment of the state of South Dakota, USD is the oldest public university in the state.On a 286-acre campus, USD is situated in the southeastern portion of South Dakota, approximately 63 miles southwest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 39 miles northwest of Sioux City, Iowa and north of the Missouri River.The University of South Dakota is home to South Dakota's only medical school, law school, and accredited business school. It is also home to the National Music Museum, with over 15,000 American, European, and non-western instruments. USD is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents, and its current president is Jim Abbott. The university has been accredited by the North Central Association of College and Schools since 1913. Nine alumni have been selected as Rhodes Scholars; Ernest Lawrence, B.A. 1922, received the 1939 Nobel Prize in Physics.

The University of South Dakota School of Law has one of the more favorable student-faculty ratios in American legal education. While the number may change slightly each year, usually approximately 75% of USD Law's upper-level courses have 35 or fewer students. Our students derive a direct benefit from this small-sized, responsive and encouraging environment. The total enrollment in The University of South Dakota School of Law is approximately 240 students, which contributes to the quality of legal education. It also facilitates the development of close associations among the members of the Law School community and creates a setting in which individual student questions and concerns can be addressed. Students, faculty, administration, and staff become well-acquainted and develop enduring friendships with one another. The faculty of 15 full-time professors, in addition to several adjunct instructors, are readily available to visit with students and exchange ideas, study law, and meet the rigorous challenges inherent in legal education. The Deans and library director also teach regularly. Student participation in the classroom is the norm, as is individualized professional/career development assistance. A primary objective of the Law School curriculum is to develop analytical and other skills that are fundamental for the legal profession. The faculty employ a variety of pedagogical techniques to achieve that objective, including Socratic dialogue, the case method, lecture, and simulation. The curriculum is designed to familiarize students with basic legal doctrines and to instill the values of the legal profession and the judicial system. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of co-curricular activities at local, regional, and national levels. These student activities complement the formal components of the curriculum and promote the development of legal skills. Skill building activities include, but are not limited to, participation in the South Dakota Law Review, Moot Court Board, Alternative Dispute Resolution Board, and Trial Team.

Unique: We are one of only a handful of programs in the nation to offer a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in Addiction Studies, as well as a Minor. Extraordinary Education: Our students consistently exceed the national average on board certification exams. Our curriculum exceeds national standards. Our faculty members have more 170 years of experience, they present at state and national conferences, serve on the boards of regional and national organizations and are members of national honor societies. We are accredited through the International Coalition of Addiction Studies Education. We are the only addiction curriculum at USD that has been approved for international and state certification, which meets International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium standards. Are you interested in learning more about research that addresses issues in addiction and/or mental health? The Center for Brain and Behavior Research (CBBRe) will be offering a multi-disciplinary summer research program in 2014 aimed at providing USD undergraduate students with an opportunity to conduct high-quality, mentored, hypothesis-driven research in fields related to substance use, abuse and related or underlying mental health issues. The program aims to introduce first generation college students from rural backgrounds to addiction and mental health research, but all USD undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. The program will incorporate a wide range of experimental methods with human or animal subjects, including cognitive, behavioral, systems, neuropharmacological, electrophysiological and molecular approaches. Faculty involved in this program are members of the Departments of Biology, Psychology, Addiction Studies, Psychiatry, and Pediatrics, Division of Basic Biomedical Sciences, School of Business, and Sanford Research. Students will work with a faculty mentor for 12 weeks over the summer of 2014 on a dedicated research project, and will present their work at the poster session held at the end of the summer program. Students will also present their work at IdeaFest in April of 2015.
