BIG HOMIE INC- We are a nonprofit organization based out of San Antonio, Texas. Our mission is to create leaders amongst youth. We were formed in October 2012 by 4 young African American men (the oldest being 30 years old and the youngest being 22). We started by working with District Attorney Susan Reed, State Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon, and State Senator Leticia Van De Putte on cleaning up the Camelot II area in northeast San Antonio, east Bexar County, where we picked up a record setting 40+ TONS of trash on April 27th (which was actually our 4th time cleaning up the area). Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson, Bexar County Sheriff Susan Pamerleau and the Sheriff's Department, the Bexar County Juvenile Department, Bexar County Public Works, Tiger Sanitation, Becks Industries, and the Camelot Volunteer Fire Department were all huge parts in each one of our cleanups. There are dozens of kids that live in the area that don't have any resources such as basketball courts, parks, or playgrounds because they live in an unincorporated area. Which basically means, that since we live in the county (outside the city limits), the county doesn't have as much money, power, or resources as the city. We can't even get street lights because we don't live in the city. The only thing to do is to play in the neighborhood streets and go to their friends' houses, but the streets were filled with TONS of trash. Literally. So we decided to get more involved in the community and not just clean and leave. We started getting the kids registered for the different events such as the Spurs Youth Basketball League and George Gervin Youth Academy's basketball tournaments. We also try to hold monthly birthday parties in the area for all the kids and Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union and Walmart both helped us tremendously with our Halloween Candy Giveaway. We've been on a mission to show the kids that there is more to life than just the filth they see on a daily basis. Our organization actually just got donated a house out in the Camelot area that we're trying to fix up and turn into our Camelot Clubhouse/Community Resource Center. It needs some work but we're determined to get it up and running for these kids.
In January of 2009, Bishop Sides shared his vision for Christian World Ministries to focus on the youth. This ministry is designed to get the youth more involved in praise and worship and offer a positive outlet for self expression. Members will learn dance moves and choreography, but more importantly, they will experience a new level of worship. KINGDOM KiDz will be scheduled to minister in different in-house and outreach events. There is a difference between entertaining a crowd and honoring God with one's gifts. This ministry's focus is not on performing, but getting people excited about God through the art of worship. Anyone from 5 to 14 years of age is welcome to participate
