San Francisco City Hall is the seat of government for the City and County of San Francisco, California. Re-opened in 1915 in its open space area in the city's Civic Center, it is a Beaux-Arts monument to the City Beautiful movement that epitomized the high-minded American Renaissance of the 1880s to 1917. The structure's dome is taller than that of the United States Capitol by 42 feet. The present building replaced an earlier City Hall that was destroyed during the 1906 earthquake, which was two blocks from the present one. It was bounded by Larkin Street, McAllister Street, and City Hall Avenue (a street, now built over, which ran from the corner of Grove and Larkin to the corner of McAllister and Leavenworth), largely where the current Public Library and U.N. Plaza stand today.The principal architect was Arthur Brown, Jr., of Bakewell & Brown, whose attention to the finishing details extended to the doorknobs and the typeface to be used in signage. Brown's blueprints of the building are preserved at the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. Brown also designed the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House, Veterans Building, Temple Emanuel, Coit Tower and the Federal office building at 50 United Nations Plaza.

Alonzo King LINES Ballet nurtures dynamic artistry and the development of authentic, creative expression through dance. Dedicated to exploring the possibilities of movement from a global perspective, the company performs original works of contemporary ballet created by choreographer Alonzo King. LINES Ballet is unique, not only because of the way it transcends and renews traditional ballet, but also because it is an American ballet company whose choreographer actively develops new work with other artists from diverse disciplines and cultures. Alonzo King understands ballet as a science — founded on universal, geometric principles of energy and evolution — and develops a new language of movement from its classical forms and techniques. LINES Ballet shares its vision of transformative, revelatory dance through performances and outreach activities worldwide, as well as by cultivating the gifts of developing dancers through the joint BFA Program with Dominican University of California, the two year Training Program, and the Alonzo King LINES Dance Center. "The term LINES alludes to all that is visible in the phenomenal world. There is nothing that is made or formed without a line. Straight and Circle encompass all that we see. Whatever can be seen is formed by a line. In mathematics it is a straight or curved continuous extent of length without breadth. Lines are in our fingerprints, the shapes of our bodies, constellations, geometry. It implies genealogical connection, progeny and spoken word. It marks the starting point and finish. It addresses direction, communication, and design. A line of thought. A boundary or eternity. A melodic line. The equator. The Performance Art Institute (PAI) is a new and exciting multifaceted art space dedicated to performance art and issues that matter in our society and culture. At the core of our program is our artist-in-residence program, which is one of the first and only of its kind. Housing and showcasing new genre artists connected to performance, film, video, sound and avant-garde music, our artist-in-residence program focuses on the development and presentation of new work created in the free-thinking and accessible atmosphere of PAI and San Francisco. Through creative alliances with local museums and nine bay area schools, artists from around the world are presented with the opportunity to meld their residency into the maximum creative environment to ideate, compose, perform and document fresh work.
McAllister Tower Apartments is a 28-story, 94m residential apartment skyscraper at 100 McAllister Street in San Francisco, California. The property is owned and operated by the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. The tower includes mixed-use offices on various floors, and the Art Deco-styled "Sky Room" with a panoramic view on the 24th floor.Conceived as an unusual combination of a large church surmounted by a hotel, construction of the building brought architectural dispute. Initially designed by Timothy L. Pflueger in the style of Gothic Revival, the investors fired his firm and hired Lewis P. Hobart, who changed little of Pflueger's design. In a resulting lawsuit, Pflueger won nearly half the damages he asked for. The building opened in 1930 as the William Taylor Hotel and Temple Methodist Episcopal Church. However, extra construction expenses had put the congregation at greater financial risk, and the church-hotel concept did not prove popular. No profit was made in six years, and the church left, losing their investment. In the late 1930s the building housed the Empire Hotel, known for its Sky Room lounge, then from World War II to the 1970s, 100 McAllister served as U.S. government offices.Reopening as university housing and offices in 1981, McAllister Tower is home to some 300 law students and their families. "The Tower" is sited one block from the administrative and scholastic center of Hastings College of the Law, and is the most prominent building in the district.
Civic Center/UN Plaza is a BART and Muni Metro station in the Civic Center of San Francisco. The westernmost of the dual BART/Muni stops on the Market Street Subway, Civic Center/UN Plaza acts as a major hub for passenger movement throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. With 18,432 exits each weekday, it is the fourth-busiest station in the BART system.LocationOutside, in the United Nations Plaza itself, facing Market Street, there is a fountain and a north-south cross marking its center to be at latitude/longitude coordinates 37°46′48″N 122° 24′49″W. There is a flea market at the plaza or farmer's market every day, year round.There are several notable buildings in the Civic Center area, including City Hall, the War Memorial Opera House, Asian Art Museum, Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall. The San Francisco Public Library's main branch is located across the street and San Francisco City Clinic is 2 blocks east on 7th street. Tenderloin is located two blocks north of the station.HistoryService at this station began on November 5, 1973.Station layoutLike all stations in the Market Street Subway apart from Van Ness, Civic Center/UN Plaza has a tri-level configuration. Passengers first descend from the street to a mezzanine concourse containing faregates for passengers to enter separate BART and Muni paid areas, with one BART entrance on each end and one for Muni in the middle. Muni Metro trains stop at an island platform on the second level down. The Muni platform is punctured in several locations by openings for stairs and escalators that go directly from the mezzanine level to the BART platform, bypassing the Muni platform. As the openings are not blocked off by walls, it is possible to hear activity on the Muni platform from the BART platform.
