This 6,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art chess center features a world-class tournament playing hall, classroom, library and casual play area. But we’re more than just a community center. We take a multi-level approach to promoting the game of chess: - Our Scholastic Outreach Initiative spreads the educational benefits of chess to thousands of students in hundreds of schools and community centers across the greater Saint Louis area, primarily through afterschool programming. - We’re a member-based community center where players of all skill levels and abilities, from beginner to expert, attend our free classes, participate in tournaments, attend lectures, take private lessons and more. - We promote chess at the top levels by hosting all of the major U.S. Championship events and matches between the world’s top players.

Our students average more than three years above grade level on standardized tests. But those achievements form only the foundation. At New City we work towards genuine understanding. Our students are taught how to discover the question, work as members of a team, and solve the problem. These skills will continue to be the hallmarks of successful members of society. The World Chess Hall of Fame is a nonprofit, collecting institution situated in the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, United States.The WCHOF is the only institution of its kind and offers a variety of programming to explore the dynamic relationship between art and chess, including educational outreach initiatives that provide context and meaning to the game and its continued educational impact. Founded in 1984, it is run by the United States Chess Trust, a charitable arm of the United States Chess Federation. Formerly located in New Windsor, New York; Washington D.C.; and Miami, Florida, it moved to St. Louis on September 9, 2011.HistoryThe brainchild of Steven Doyle, USCF president from 1984 to 1987, the World Chess Hall of Fame was created in 1986 as the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame.Opened in 1988 in the basement of the Federation’s then-headquarters in New Windsor, New York, the small museum contained a modest collection, including a book of chess openings signed by Bobby Fischer; a silver set awarded to Paul Morphy, American chess player and unofficial World Champion; and cardboard plaques honoring past grandmasters.
OUR PROGRAMS: Recycling On the Go St. Louis Earth Day’s Recycling On the Go is the region’s first wide-scale event-greening program. Green Dining Alliance A program committed to working with St. Louis restaurants to reduce their environmental impact. By considering all areas of operations, the GDA puts strong emphasis on reducing, recycling and composting restaurant waste as well as sourcing sustainable food, to-go ware and cleaning supplies. St. Louis Earth Day Festival The St. Louis Earth Day Festival is the oldest and largest Earth Day Festival in the Midwest. Attracting 30,000 attendees on average annually, the Festival is a premier destination for the public to learn about a wide-range of environmental issues in an engaging and entertaining setting. Recycling Extravaganza A collection event for hard-to-recycle items made its debut at the 2011 St. Louis Earth Day Festival. All are invited to load up their cars, trucks or bicycle baskets with any (or all) of the items that will be collected by one of a dozen partnering non-profit organizations or recycling companies. St. Louis Earth Day Symposium This important educational and networking event for local governments and planning professionals gives tools for implementing sustainable considerations in new projects throughout the St. Louis area.

Kent Sr. and Ray and Judy DeLuca Ford, YLC’s mission is to positively impact the lives of youth by offering academic enhancement opportunities designed to inspire a commitment to life-long learning and leadership from the classroom to the community.

Foundation of BAC There are 3,000 Washington University African-American alumni worldwide. Founded in May 1983, Washington University’s Black Alumni Council (BAC) began with the 10th year reunion of the Class of 1973. In early 1983, Alex Carroll initiated the reunion in honor of the avowed largest Black graduating class. Campus administrator, Cynthia L. Cosby, and others worked with Alex in sponsoring the first Black alumni reunion and formulating an alumni association. A steering committee comprised of alumni volunteers laid the foundation of what was to become the Washington University Black Alumni Council. Through the generosity and untiring support of many alumni and friends, the Black Alumni Council Scholarship Endowment has reached $100,000 in addition to additional noteworthy scholarship funds. The Black Alumni Council began fund-raising activities in February 1989 with its first scholarship dinner-dance. The BAC established its first scholarship endowment in February 1993 with a $50,000 gift to Washington University. Since that time and with other annual scholarship benefits, many African American students attending Washington University have benefitted from these scholarship resources. The Black Alumni Council has active councils in St. Louis, Missouri, Houston, Texas, Chicago, Illinois, Atlanta, Georgia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland and currently seeks to grow chapters in all of the contiguous United States! African American alumni throughout the nation participate in such BAC activities as college fairs and other recruitment activities, as well as special events within their respective states. BJC School Outreach and Youth Development was formed in 1991 to assist St. Louis-area school districts address behaviors deemed extremely harmful to young people by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These six types of high-risk behavior are tobacco use; substance abuse; poor nutrition; lack of physical fitness; risky sexual behaviors; and violence, injury and safety.
Hawthorn affiliates with the Young Women’s Leadership Network (“YWLN”) which supports five highly successful all-girls’ public schools in New York City and nine affiliate schools around the country. The YWLN model includes Daily Advisory in which a small group of girls meets each day with a faculty advisor. YWLN schools incorporate both a leadership and a health and wellness curriculum. A full time, trained college counselor works with the students beginning in 10th grade. Learning does not stop at the end of the regular school day; girls engage in programming after school and during the summer to strengthen their skills and expand their horizons. Uniforms are required. An all-girls’ school beginning at the 6th grade captures girls as they head into the tumultuous adolescent years. It is at this age that girls often begin to lose some of their earlier confidence and their self-esteem can begin to waver. Middle school girls who once saw themselves as curious and capable students, particularly in math and science, often begin to question their abilities. In a single sex environment, girls can thrive academically and socially, free from the distractions present in a coeducational school. Hawthorn girls have a real sense of belonging to a community that values them for their unique attributes and celebrates their strengths. The option of public single-sex education is not currently available in St. Louis. Hawthorn will be the first school of its kind, offering low-income families the opportunity to choose a single-sex education for their daughters. Hawthorn will provide its young women with the academic ability, self-esteem, and leadership skills that will enable them to succeed in college and beyond, forging pathways for themselves to bright futures.
