In 2005, the Department of Defense received Congressional authorization for a Base Realignment and Closure Round. Under the BRAC Joint Basing Recommendation for San Antonio, installation support functions at the Army's Fort Sam Houston were combined with those at Randolph and Lackland Air Force Bases under a single organization to form what is the largest joint base in the DoD. The Air Force is the lead agency for Joint Base San Antonio, comprising three primary locations at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, JBSA-Lackland and JBSA-Randolph plus 8 other operating locations and more than 200 mission partners. The Air Force established the 502nd Air Base Wing to provide installation support across all JBSA locations and its Air Force commander also serves as the JBSA commander. There are 49 installation support functions to include security forces, civil engineering, manpower, personnel, services, morale/welfare/recreation, comptroller, communications, legal, equal opportunity, public affairs, chapel, logistics, contracting, plans and programs and safety. JBSA services more DoD students than any other installation, more active runways than any other installation, houses the DoD's largest hospital and only level one trauma center, supports more than 250,000 personnel, including 425 retired general officers, and interfaces with 1,000 civic leaders of San Antonio, 20 smaller communities, four counties and four Congressional Districts. Its total plant replacement value is about 10.3 billion with an annual budget of $800 million. The Biohazard Brass Band (2011 MPT of the Year) - Biohazard is a high intensity, energetic, no-holds barred ensemble. Influenced by American Brass bands such as 'Youngblood,' 'Rebirth,', 'Newbirth' and 'Trombone Shorty', Biohazard's broad range of music is catered to audiences of all ages, and we guarantee a foot-stomping good time everywhere we perform. The team's goal is to provide high-quality entertainment while bringing together a mix of the traditional sounds of New Orleans and the styles of current popular music. The Biohazard Brass Band provides musical support for static ceremonies in a military or civilian setting, as well as music for organizational events, Brigade-level unit runs, and parades and festivals. Mission Brass and Cat V - Our Brass Quintets made up of two trumpets, one horn, one tuba and one trombone each. These Quintets are able to perform in a wide array of situations to include support of local civilian education programs by performing at schools from elementary schools to college and universities. We are able to perform and provide master classes to assist students in learning about the fundamentals of their instrument and it's place in various ensembles and about basic musicianship. The quintet is an essential ensemble for Soldier support missions that vary from Memorial Services to Change of Command Ceremonies, to support for chaplain services. Intrepid Winds - The 323d Army Band's Woodwind Quintet, "Intrepid Winds" is comprised of five Soldiers specializing in light classical and ceremonial music. Intrepid Winds provides musical support for a variety of settings to include indoor change of command ceremonies, graduations, receptions, and observances. This group is also available for educational outreach and recruiting performances. After 5 Jazz - A Jazz Quartet consisting of Piano, Bass, Drums and Trumpet/Saxaphone. After 5 is capable of supporting events where standard Jazz music is required.

Our Brigade U.S. Army 5th Recruiting Brigade is the center of Army recruiting activities for an area stretching across the great plains to the California border and covers more than 968,446 square miles. The brigade is tasked with the recruiting mission in all or part of 13 states, including Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. The brigade has seven recruiting battalions divided into 48 companies and 333 stations. Recruiting battalion headquarters are located in Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Mo., Oklahoma City, Phoenix and San Antonio. During the past 50 plus years, 5th Brigade has undergone a number of changes, and is continuing to change. Following World War II, the headquarters for the U.S. Army and Air Force Recruiting Service in this area was known as the San Antonio District and was located at Fort Sam Houston. In 1949, the command moved to Dallas and its name was changed first to the Texas Recruiting District and later to the U.S. Army and Air Force Southwestern Recruiting District. The headquarters returned to Fort Sam Houston in 1953 and settled into its present location, Building 2006 -- “the old hospital area.” Some might even remember the three-story brick structure of the main headquarters building as their place of birth, since it was once the obstetric ward of the station hospital. The Army and Air Force recruiting services went their separate ways in 1954. The command became known as Fourth U.S. Army Recruiting District in 1964, with jurisdiction over a five- state area. With a major reorganization in 1965, the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Stations (AFEES) became a separate organization. Of the many changes that have taken place, the most dramatic has been the recruiting concept itself--the evolution of the Volunteer Army. In 1970, Gen. William C. Westmoreland announced the Army’s commitment to end the draft. In 1972, the last draftee was inducted, and in 1973 the Induction Authority expired. For more than 35 years the Army’s strength has been maintained entirely from volunteers. Other changes have included the transfer of operation of all AFEES to the jurisdiction of the Military Enlistment Processing Command in 1976. Effective October 1995, the responsibility for recruiting health care providers was transferred from the U.S. Army Health Professional Support Agency to the U.S. Army Recruiting Command. The Armed Forces Sports Programs includes 18 Armed Forces Championships, 7 National Championships and 20 International Championships within Conseil International du Sports Militaire (CISM). The program is open to all Active Duty personnel, to include Reservists and National Guard on active duty status. The objectives of the Armed Forces Sports Program are to: CISM, which is headquartered in Belgium, is the second largest sporting organization in the world with 122 military member nations to include the U.S. Its motto of "Friendship Through Sport" establishes a common unity amongst its members. Our military athletes compete against their counterparts from other nations at venues around the world. CISM and National championships are key preliminary competitions for our military athletes who qualify to compete at the Pan American or Olympic games.
