The Colorado State Capitol Building, located at 200 East Colfax Avenue in Denver, Colorado, is the home of the Colorado General Assembly and the offices of the Governor of Colorado and Lieutenant Governor of Colorado. The building is intentionally reminiscent of the United States Capitol. Designed by Elijah E. Myers, it was constructed in the 1890s from Colorado white granite, and opened for use in November 1894. The distinctive gold dome consists of real gold leaf, first added in 1908, commemorating the Colorado Gold Rush. The building is part of Denver's Civic Center area. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Civic Center Historic District in 1974, and became part of the Denver Civic Center National Historic Landmark District in 2012.Serving as the beginning of the Capitol Hill district, the historic building sits slightly higher than the rest of downtown Denver. The main entrance hall is open 180 feet (55 m) to the top of the dome, about the height of an 18-story building. Additionally, the official elevation of Denver is measured outside the west entrance to the building, where the fifteenth step is engraved with the words "One Mile Above Sea Level." From this step, at 5280ft, the sun can be seen setting behind the Rocky Mountains. A second mile high marker was set in the 18th step in 1969 when Colorado State University students resurveyed the elevation. In 2003, a more accurate measurement was made with modern means, and the 13th step was identified as being one mile (1.6 km) high, where a 3rd marker was installed.
The Tivoli Brewery is a historic building originally home to the Tivoli Brewing Company. It was designed by prominent Denver architect Frederick C. Eberley. The building is located in the Auraria Neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. Today the building is home to the Tivoli Student Union of the Auraria Campus, serving as a student center for the Metropolitan State University of Denver, Community College of Denver, and the University of Colorado Denver. In August 2015 the revived Tivoli Brewing Company began brewing in a new facility inside the building, in the original brewing area.HistoryThe Tivoli Brewery building, located in the Auraria Neighborhood of Denver, Colorado, is considered a historic landmark. The building is the former home of the Tivoli Brewing Company, which was named after the Tivoli Gardens located in Copenhagen Denmark by past owner John Good. The Tivoli Brewery building was built in 1864 by German immigrant Moritz Sigi along with the Colorado territory's first artesian well. A well known local character and Denver councilman Sigi brewed the best "Buck Beer", a hybrid lager/ale similar to a Bock. Mr. Sigi had a sudden and tragic horse carriage accident that led to his death in 1874. The brewery was then sold to John Good.At the time, the Tivoli Brewery and Zang's Brewery were the biggest breweries before prohibition. Zang's never recovered from the prohibition leaving Tivoli to become the iconic Denver Beer for the Western Aristocrat and eventually a dominant brewery in the west. Tivoli continued to grow and the public continued to embrace Tivoli beer. After Good died in 1918, the brewery stayed in the hands of Good’s descendants and his long-time business partner, William Burghardt. By the 1950s, the brewery became one of the largest breweries in the country, producing up to 150,000 barrels a year which were sold everywhere west of the Mississippi. In the early 1960s Tivoli continued to grow with the Hi-En-Brau brand.
The Sherman Street Event Center is a historic building in the North Capitol Hill neighborhood of downtown Denver.The Moorish inspired building was constructed in 1907, as a meeting hall for the El Jabel chapter of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine . It has never been a true mosque in the Islamic sense. In 1924, having outgrown the building, the Shriners sold it to the Scottish Rite Masons, who renamed it. In 1995, the Scottish Rite sold the building to Eulipions, Inc. who converted it into a catering and events facility.
St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, is an Anglo-catholic church in Denver, Colorado. Its building, "considered by many people to be one of Denver's most beautiful churches" is a Gothic style church built c.1907-1909 that was designed by architect Ralph Adams Cram. It was dedicated January 17, 1909 as Trinity Memorial Church and renamed to St. Andrews in 1917.The distinguished architect Cram, of Cram and Ferguson in Boston, Massachusetts, was commissioned to design the building for Alexis Dupont Parker as a memorial to his wife. Parker was a "railroad magnate" of the Colorado and Southern Railway who was educated in the Episcopal Ministry and was president of the board of the Colorado diocese of the Episcopal Church.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.Expanded in 2008 to a design in keeping with Cram's original plans for a larger church, St. Andrew's now seats 175 in a sanctuary that includes works by Denver artists Marion Buchan and Albert Byron Olson. The parish house is by Denver architect Jules Jacques Benedict.
The Daniels & Fisher Tower is a distinctive landmark in Denver, Colorado, in the United States. Built as part of the Daniels & Fisher department store in 1910, it was the tallest between the Mississippi River and the state of California at the time of construction, at a height of 325 feet (99 m). The building was designed by the architect Frederick Sterner and modeled after The Campanile (St. Mark's Bell Tower) at the Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy. The 20-floor clock tower has clock faces on all four sides. Daniels & Fisher were later bought out by the May Company in 1958, and the store vacated the tower. When the store was demolished (ca. 1971), the tower was saved and renovated into lofts and businesses in 1981. It stands today in downtown Denver.The basement level of the tower has been home to Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret entertainment venue since 2006.The tower was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. A 2½ ton bell occupies the top two floors of the building, above the observation deck.

The Byron White United States Courthouse is a courthouse in Denver, Colorado, currently the seat of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. It formerly housed courthouses of the United States District Court for the District of Colorado Completed between 1910 and 1916, the building, U.S. Post Office and Courthouse was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. In 1994, it was renamed in honor of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Byron White (1917–2002) a native of Fort Collins, Colorado.Building historyThe grand Neo-Classical design of the Byron White U.S. Courthouse brought design elements popular in the eastern United States to Denver. The monumental scale and elegance expressed its official and public character, and served as inspiration for other civic buildings in the city.By 1900, Denver was a major transportation crossroads and a significant western commercial city. The monumental 1893 U.S. Post Office was already considered outdated, leading the people of Denver to seek a new, larger building for the Post Office and Federal Courts.Authorization for a new building was approved as early as 1903, but funds were not appropriated until 1908. In 1909, Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department James Knox Taylor selected New York architects Tracy, Swartwout, and Litchfield to design Denver's new Post Office and Courthouse. It was one of only thirty-five Federal buildings built during Taylor's tenure (1883–1912) that were designed by independent architects commissioned by the U.S. Treasury Department under the Tarsney Act. Passed in 1893, the Act authorized the Treasury Secretary to use private architects, selected through architectural competitions, to design Federal buildings. The Act reflected the growing demand for greater architectural standards for public buildings and opened the way for additional appropriations to maintain those standards.
19th Street Bridge is a two-span through Pratt truss road bridge in Denver, Colorado, over the South Platte River, now used for pedestrians. It was built in 1888 to replace a wooden structure and carried automobile traffic until 1986. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.HistoryA number of bridges were built across the South Platte River beginning in 1859, and by 1875, there was interest in a bridge to span the river at the 19th Street location. In 1876, a wooden bridge was constructed at the site. This previous bridge was closed to traffic in 1884 after it was damaged in a flood. Because of repeated floods destroying numerous wooden bridges, the city of Denver sought to replace them with metal structures. By 1887, because of their ready availability and low expense, the city began building metal bridges to replace the wooden spans. On August 26, 1887, the Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Works was contracted to build the 19th Street Bridge. The structure cost $25,000, including $8,250 for 120ft of iron. Construction on the new span was complete in 1888.Around 1898, a plan surfaced to rebuild the bridge as a viaduct so that it would not cross only the river, but also the rail switching yard. However, the plan was defeated in June 1904. The bridge has remained mostly unmodified since construction. Timber decking was replaced with corrugated steel following a 1961 flood and some bent hinges were replaced as a result of a 1965 flood. The 19th Street Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 4, 1985.

The Boston Building, built in 1890, was designed by the firm Andrews, Jacques and Rantoul - the same architects who designed the nearby Equitable Building. At the time of construction, it was dubbed the first "strictly modern office building" in Denver. Standing 9-stories tall (35 meters high), the building is located at 828 17th Street in Denver's historic district, on the corner of E. 17th St. and Champa. On September 18, 1978 the Boston Building received National Historic Landmark status under the Historic Resources of Downtown Denver Multiple Property Submission (Building Number: 5DV.108). The building has also been deemed a Denver historic landmark. In 1998 the building was renovated and joined with the Kistler Building to create one- and two-bedroom apartment lofts.
The Denver Woman’s Press Club (DWPC) was founded in 1898 by nineteen charter members, including organizer and first president Minnie J. Reynolds. Reynolds was an influential suffrage leader, serving as “Press Secretary” in the victorious 1893 Colorado campaign, and later as a national suffrage organizer. She was one of the first woman political writers for the Rocky Mountain News, and an early woman stump speaker and activist in the Populist Party. In 1924, the DWPC purchased the studio home of George Elbert Burr, an artist famous for his etchings of Colorado. The clubhouse was declared eligible as a historic landmark in 1968 and placed on the state register of historic places in 1995. As part of its 1998 Centennial Celebration, the Denver Woman’s Press Club restored the building and garden with funds obtained from the Colorado Historical Fund and private donations. The small clubhouse continues to be a community center, open to the public for author receptions and other special events. Many literary luminaries have been guests of DWPC including Denverite William Barrett, Barbara Cartland, Mary Higgins Clark, Barbara Kingsolver, James Michener, Robert MacNeil, Anna Quindlen, Tracy Chevalier, and Annie Proulx. Today the DWPC membership includes over 200 writing professionals in various fields – publishing, journalism, electronic communications, advertising, marketing, public relations, trade and business publications, history, education, freelance market, fundraising, and government.
Denver Dry Goods Company Building is a historic department store building located in downtown Denver, Colorado. For a while, the store was claimed to be the largest department store west of Chicago. A description on one postcard from 1916 read: "The Largest Store in the Central West, 400 Feet long-Seven Acres Floor Area, 1,200 Employees, A $1,500,000 Stock, 15th to 16th on California Street Denver Colorado".Flagship store of The Denver Dry Goods Company, the retailer was part of Associated Dry Goods, and under ADG the downtown Denver store was renovated. Many Colorado residents fondly recall the stores' motto, "Where Colorado Shops With Confidence." The store was acquired by May Company as part of Associated Dry Goods Corp. in 1986.Originally built in 1889,the store was expanded in 1898, 1906 and 1924. It was converted to apartments in 1994.

The Ellie Caulkins Opera House, which opened on September 10, 2005, is located in Denver, Colorado as part of the large Denver Performing Arts Complex. It seats 2,225. The Caulkins family pledged $7 million towards the enhancement of the lyric opera house and adjacent public spaces which were constructed inside of the Newton Auditorium.History of the theatreThe Municipal Auditorium, the largest in America except for Madison Square Garden in New York, was completed in time to host the Democratic National Convention in 1908. Mayor Speer and the Chamber of Commerce raised $100,000 to celebrate the July 7 grand opening of the Auditorium with Denver's first national political convention, when William Jennings Bryan was nominated to run for President for the third time.Originally, the building was a multi-purpose structure: it accommodated concerts, operas, theatrical shows, conventions, basketball, auto shows and even circuses, with flags flying from its domes and light bulbs outlining its pediments, cornice, and corners. The proscenium of the original building was designed to be portable so as to create different-sized spaces for different events. When the proscenium was in place, the building was a 3,326 seat theatre with an extraordinarily large back stage area. When the proscenium was raised, increasing the seating capacity to 12,000, the stage and backstage area became large enough to hold circuses and rodeos.For several years in the 1920s and 30s, Music Week was an annual event in Denver. Various communities of the state presented musical programs and most of the performances were in the Auditorium. An opera or operetta was commonly included in the offerings.In 1921, a company of Denver musicians performed Flotow's Martha in May; of special historical significance was the fact that the two performances were broadcast by radio station 9ZAF, the first time ever that a full-length opera was broadcast.

Denver Place is an office complex in Denver, Colorado, comprising the North and South Towers, Terraces and the Granite Tower. It is Colorado's largest commercial office property. Denver Place South Tower is the tallest building of the complex. It is 416ft tall, has 34 floors, and was completed in 1981. The Denver Place complex is located in the downtown area of Denver, Colorado and mostly consists of four high-rise buildings spanning two city blocks. The Denver Place North and South Towers take up the southeastern block. They were developed in 1981 by Devco Property Inc. from design by Marvin E. Knedler & Assoc. Architects, P.C. The South Tower is the tallest, reaching 416ft with 34 floors, while the North Tower is 285ft tall with 23 floors. At street level is a retail mall. Formerly known as the Plaza Tower, this skyscraper stands at 398ft tall with 31 floors. At the north end of this block is the Ritz-Carlton Denver, the city's first and only Ritz Carlton, formerly an Embassy Suites Hotel. The building is 390ft tall and has 38 floors.Both the Granite Tower and the Ritz-Carlton parts of Denver Place were sold. Mid-century neon signs are in danger of disappearing all over the city of Denver. An example of why this is the case is exemplified in the story of Denver's main street: Colfax Avenue. During the 1950's, Colfax Avenue was better known to many westward travelers as Route 40. As these travelers ventured toward their mountain destinations, they were greeted by the bright neon signs of the city. These neon signs were made with great craftmanship and artistry and were designed to grab the attention of the multitudes of motorists traveling the strip. The motels along Colfax that many consider run-down and seedy today were popular tourist stops in the heyday of Colfax. After the opening of Interstate 70, which allowed travelers to completely bypass Colfax, the once-vibrant businesses along the street began to experience a decline. Today, the neon signs that survive are a reminder of an important era in the history of Colfax. These still-standing signs are in danger of disappearing for a variety of reasons. Reurbanization is bringing an influx of residents back into the neighborhoods along Colfax and leading to a demand for new development. The old restaurants, bars, and motels on Colfax as well as the signs that are attached to them are quickly becoming prime targets for development. In addition, many of these aging signs are in need of repair. It is often more cost effective for these businesses to replace their iconic neon signs with cheaper, lower-quality versions. In light of several recent examples of mid-century signs disappearing from the landscape, we at Save the Signs are doing what we can to encourage everyone to appreciate these signs as works of art that are worth saving.

Confluence Park is an urban park encompassing the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River in Denver's Lower Downtown (LoDo), a bustling district of 19th-century brick warehouses and storefronts that has been redeveloped since the late 1980s.Current usageThe park includes concrete trails often filled with walkers, runners, and bikers. Some grassy areas, river overlooks, and park benches are also available. Two pedestrian bridges cross the South Platte River and Cherry Creek at Confluence Park. The eastern edge of the South Platte in Confluence Park has been transformed into a kayak run, immediately across from R.E.I.'s (Recreational Equipment Inc.) Colorado flagship store. The park is adjacent to a number of new up-scale townhouses, apartments, and loft developments, another park bordering the South Platte downstream, train tracks, and Denver's skatepark.The Platte Valley Trolley originates in Confluence Park, running along the west side of the South Platte River from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and for all Denver Broncos home games.

The Sherman Street Event Center is a historic building in the North Capitol Hill neighborhood of downtown Denver.The Moorish inspired building was constructed in 1907, as a meeting hall for the El Jabel chapter of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine . It has never been a true mosque in the Islamic sense. In 1924, having outgrown the building, the Shriners sold it to the Scottish Rite Masons, who renamed it. In 1995, the Scottish Rite sold the building to Eulipions, Inc. who converted it into a catering and events facility.
