Sargent's Daughters opened in November 2013 on New York’s Lower East Side. The gallery's focus is on contemporary art that has a strong historical lineage while challenging current aesthetic conventions. Sargent's Daughters takes its name from the painter John Singer Sargent, who was an innovator working in a traditional medium. Accordingly, the gallery interest is in artists whose work combines the same qualities of tradition and cutting edge. In addition to solo exhibitions by emerging artists and mid-career artists, the gallery programs two-person and small group exhibitions to create new conversations within the context of each artist's work. Sargent's Daughters produces artist catalogues to further the discourse of contemporary art.

Lu Magnus is an art laboratory and salon dedicated to building a new model of what an art gallery can be. Launched in November 2010, Lu Magnus is located in the Lower East Side and activates its 18-foot ceiling space by enabling the production of cutting-edge exhibitions and building a platform for discovery, collaboration and exchange. The experience of art and the physical encounter of people and thoughts are what make Lu Magnus not just a mirror of contemporary society but an active link in the community and creator in the future. This model evolves around Lu LAB programming that is developed in close collaboration with the artists on view, encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations, participatory and performative happenings, public workshops, and exhibitions that become subject to shared investigations and dialogue. The Lu LAB programming makes the gallery into a dynamic meeting place with the mission to incubate and give a platform to thought leaders. The LAB is not focusing on one professional area, but on quality of thought and building community. We invite the public into the physical space to encounter and engage in the constant exploration of how art can challenge, transform and inspire us.

We are a gallery exhibition space located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, located at 33b Orchard Street between Hester and Canal Streets. Why 33 Orchard? [a] To create a gallery structure that invites other gallerists/curators, who do not currently have permanent spaces, to install exhibitions of their programs alongside like-minded professionals. [b] The need to create such a space, stems from the prevailing gallery business model which has become too costly with the commercial rents, production costs, and art fairs fees associated with maintaining them. [c] We are passionate about the ideas of sharing resources, collaborating, and splitting the costs of operating an art gallery. Who is 33 Orchard? Jane Kim: Jane Kim is an art dealer, gallerist, and curator based in New York. Kim's professional experience includes working at various galleries in New York City and Paris, then creating her first gallery Thrust Projects in 2005 which subsequently became Jane Kim Gallery in 2011, an online gallery for contemporary art. Her work also includes the pop-up show Swing State at the location, 119 Hester Street in NYC this past April-May 2013.

Warholian Lineage Research Center
Distance: 0.1 mi Competitive Analysis
191 Henry St
New York, NY 10002

(917) 749-0319

First conceived in 1990 and formulated through other paths during the years since, the Center explores art and culture from the perspective of Andy Warhol’s mentoring relationship with his environment; specifically with Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, as well as the exploration of the ideas and lineages of each. The essence of the Warholian Research Center is it’s creation of a place to explore the underpinnings of what Warhol passed on to his two inheritors in a mutual symbiosis. Encompassing the openness Warhol’s legacy spoke to: a dialogue to be carried out in the community and the school; a roundtable spirit. This resource for contemporary inquisitors was founded to encourage the forming of new conclusions and new manifestations in the arts, that continue to look to this lineage for inspiration and guidance. HISTORY... The unique circumstance of losing three icons of the art world within a three year period left a particular unresolved, emotional and complex precedent for research. Warhol’s encouragement supported his proteges’ continuation and the evolution of his own impact, relationships that should have produced many more works and documentation. In the latter part of Warhol’s life, he made a conscious decision to absorb Haring & Basquiat into his life- and let himself be immersed in theirs, even as highly uncharacteristic as this was of Warhol’s previous relationships with other visual artist peers. DEVELOPING CONCLUSIONS... Warhol’s contribution was indeed collaborative, thus “Warholian” refers to Andy Warhol and his collaborators, sometimes regardless of their knowledge of contribution or their proper due given. Warhol actively documented his intellectual mentoring of Keith Haring and Haring considered Warhol a mentor in the most classic of ways, according to Haring’s own writings. The fact that Haring was first and foremost a community artist, and that Warhol saw him as a continuation of his work, is an underlying emphasis of the Warholian Linage Research Center. Jean Michel Basquiat was the only visual artist that Warhol extensively collaborated with on actual works. Warhol’s work with Basquiat was unprecedented and thorough and create another major emphasis of research at Warholian Lineage Research Center. Basquiat's heritage and Warhol’s ideas on diversity are also of major emphasis in understanding the Warholian lineage by current and future generations. Warhol’s emphasis on the uniqueness of each individual and his reliance on women in his environment also serve as major clues to his directive. CURRENT GOALS... To create a non-profit arts organization with expanded offices, exhibition, and research facilities open to all in Manhattan. To support education of this lineage and the creation of educational outreach for people of all ages and to support the manifestation of museums for Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring in New York City. To document and promote the Warholian lineage and the modern, contemporary and new artists of this lineage. To encourage the mentor and disciple relationship in culture at large, based on this linage and other historic examples.
