The American Pride was built in 1941, originally as a two-masted "schooner-dragger" and launched as the "Virginia". She spent over forty years commercially fishing the Grand Banks and George's Banks. In October of 1996 she was purchased by the Children's Maritime Foundation and began her historic 7500 mile sail under Captain Greg Clinton through the Panama Canal to her current home port in Rainbow Harbor, Long Beach, California. The once successful fishing schooner now majestically sails the waters of Southern California where she now shares the adventure and romance of a "tallship" with all who come aboard.

I’ve always been thankful to the Almighty God for the good life that I am enjoying here in America and have always thought of my family back in the Philippines whom I wish were all here with me having a good life too. I know many of us here in America work hard to be able to support our families back home. Some of us even work double jobs to have extra money to send to them. But what about those who don’t have relatives here is America; those people who are not only poor but also sick. That’s when I thought of starting the Toy Drive project in 2002 mainly to cheer the sick and poor children in the charity wards of the Philippine General Hospital. I wrote to Dr. Johnny Nanagas, the then Director of PGH and he referred me to Dr. Philip Cruz, the then Chief Resident of the Department of Pediatrics. He took care of distributing the three boxes of toys that I sent for the first time. In 2003, the Press Club under the presidency of Dave Casuco adopted the project and we were able to send from 3 boxes in 2002 to 6 boxes in 2003. This time, I personally went back home with my first volunteer, my daughter Marisse, to see to it that the toys are actually reaching the hands of the sick and poor children in the Philippines. In 2004, with the supportive team efforts of the press club members, we were able to double the balikbayan boxes of toys from 6 to 13 boxes. In 2005, we were able to send 12 boxes during the Summer Toy Driveand 18 boxes during the Christmas Toy Drive. Evidently, we all know that when sick children are happy, they heal faster. However, when they don’t have the medication they need, they don’t heal at all. That’s when I thought that giving them toys is not enough. Whenever I give toys to the kids, the parents turn around to me and give me their prescriptions and results of their medical tests. I feel awful that I am unable to help personally. So, I thought that it’s time to register a non-profit organization to enable us to seek financial help from Filipino-American residents in America and Filipino-American businesses. In 2006, the Guardian Angels of America Foundation (GAAF) was born. It’s time for us to do something bigger and make a difference in the lives of the poor. I would like to appeal to all of you to take part in this endeavor. I believe that angels exist only sometimes they don’t have wings. We call them friends or partners like you. Ms. Loi Herrera - Founder Guardian Angels of America Foundation-GAAF
