African-Centered College Preparatory Academy is not just a school, but the result of 24 years of hard work and dedication by the Kansas City, Mo., community. The school offers innovative, college prep instruction to students in pre-kindergarten through 7th grade according to the principles of Ma'at and the Nguzo Saba. However, the story began much earlier. African-centered education in the Kansas City Public Schools began in 1988 with the J.S. Chick African Shule, providing a unique cultural education to nearly 350 students. Since then the program has evolved into a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade program servicing more than 920 students. The latest evolution of the program, African-Centered Prep, continues the strong cultural aspects of the existing program with a revamped curriculum and the support services offered to all KCPS students. The school is led by a principal and advised by a Council of Elders (Wazuri) that offers input and guidance on every aspect of school operations.

Giving Grove

As of this past spring, the Giving Grove has supported the installation of 40 edible tree gardens. These 40 sites include 595 fruit trees, 20 nut trees, 447 berries (blackberry, raspberry and/or blueberries), and 848 strawberries. Of the 40 projects, 25 are in Missouri and 15 are in Kansas. While many of the Giving Grove tree varieties will mature at different rates, once all trees, berries and nuts reach maturity, the Missouri Extension data for average yield indicates that the current installations’ annual fruit, berry and nut production will be in the range of 179,000 lbs annually. Using 1/3 lb as a measure for servings - the average annual yield represents approximately 537,000 servings. Lots of healthy food! This spring, we were at Center Elementary in Kansas City Missouri planting fruits, figs and some berries. A large group of kindergartners gathered around me with their curious sparkling eyes. We had just finished eating some pears that we had brought along to the project. Not knowing exactly how to engage the 5 year olds into the planting process I decided to have everyone sit on the grass while I shared the concept of the Giving Grove. After having determined that most of the children live nearby, one boy politely raised his hand and asked, "...so my mom has to pay for this at the grocery store, and you are saying I'll be able to walk over here and pick the fruit off the tree.......for free?" The expression on his face and the wonderment of the group was priceless.
