DDC has two primary programs from which we organize activities for nearly 1,000 students in grades 7 through 12, and support high school and/or college reentry students up to age 27. Upward Bound (UB) A year-round academic program that provides the supplemental schooling and support needed to prepare nearly 200 first-generation college-bound students for success. Students enroll in the 9th or 10th grade for tutoring, workshops and Saturday classes and continue attending throughout high school. UB students are eligible for the Upward Bound Summer Academy, a residential intensive academic and enrichment program. Talent Search (TS) An early academic awareness, planning and youth development program, that seeks to encourage high school enrollment, completion and post-secondary matriculation, by providing a broad array of services for more than 750 students. TS improves the quality of college advising that first-generation and low-income students receive by providing one-on-one advising sessions, workshops, tutoring, academic classes, SAT preparation, internships, field trips and special events that include career days, science labs, and work site visits. Upward Bound and Talent Search are two programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education. Columbia’s Upward Bound Program was among the first seventeen projects piloted across the country in the summer of 1965. TRIO Programs Year-Round Core Services: Tutoring: One-on-one and small group in all academic subjects Classes/Labs: Small group classes, mini-courses and science lab exposure Test Prep: Small group and individual standardized test prep, including the SAT and Regents exams Workshops: Small and large group activities to develop college, career, leadership, and life skills awareness Counseling: Academic, college, career, financial aid and youth development College trips, and daily access to the college prep library, internet-capable computers, and the Center’s professional staff Students participating in Columbia campus activities have at least one required DDC activity each term, such as tutoring, workshops, exam prep, or academic enrichment classes.

We cordially invite you to join the Society for the Oral Reading of Greek and Latin Literature and to share our experience in hearing and reproducing the true sounds of Homer, Vergil, and the other Classical authors. It is generally acknowledged that the literature of the Greeks and Romans is among the most beautiful and powerful expressions of the human mind. It is also generally known that this body of literature was created with the intention of being orally performed and aurally experienced by a group of listeners, large or small, and was not intended to be read silently with the eyes alone. The element of sound is therefore fundamental to a full esthetic experience and understanding of Greek and Latin literature. And yet, the traditional method of teaching Greek and Latin ignores or neglects the sounds of these languages, as if they were of little or no importance, thus depriving students of the basic literary reward of hearing and reproducing beautiful poetry. It is as if students were to study Mozart solely from musical scores and not be given the opportunity of hearing his music.
