The Gem Theatre in Detroit houses a two level theatre with traditional row and aisle seating and intimate stage-level seating at cabaret tables. It shares a lobby with the cabaret style Century Theatre . The theatre has stylings of Spanish Revival architecture. The structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.HistoryIn 1902, the Twentieth Century Club, a group of cultural, socially prominent women, built a Mission-style building to house their club. The building, now the Century Theatre, is built of red brick trimmed with white sandstone. The first floor originally housed a dining room, while the second floor housed a 400-seat auditorium. In 1928, the member of the Century club contracted George D. Mason to design a theater addition to the Century Club building. The resulting Spanish Revival-style building was leased to the Little Theatre chain, which showed foreign films, and the building was known as the Little Theatre. In 1933, due to the Depression, the Twentieth Century Club disbanded. The Little Theatre, however, continued, suffering through several name changes, becoming The Rivoli in 1932, Drury Lane (and then the Europa in 1935, the Cinema in 1936, and the Vanguard Playhouse in 1960. The Vanguard offered live theater rather than movies. Finally, in 1967, the theatre was named the Gem. The building was used as an adult movie house until it closed in 1978. Soon afterward, developer Charles Forbes purchased the combined Gem/Century building, and began a complete restoration of the Gem Theatre in 1990. The refurbished Gem opened in 1991.

Colors Detroit Restaurant is a fully-functioning, revenue generating restaurant that specializes in “farm to table” cuisine and operating the Colors Hospitality Opportunities for Workers Institute (CHOW Institute) - a non-profit front of the house training center for low to moderate income Detroit area residents. Colors Detroit is managed by Restaurant Opportunities Center of Michigan – which is an affiliate of Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, a 501(C) 3 federally tax exempt organization with a 7.5 million dollar budget. Colors Detroit has been the recipient of funding support from entities such as the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Kresge Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the Comerica Foundation. Our restaurant partners include Russell Street Deli and Rose’s Fine Dining in Detroit, Levy’s Restaurants at Ford Field, and .Zingerman’s of Ann Arbor. Since opening in 2012, Colors Detroit has trained nearly 300 Detroit area residents for entry level front of the house positions (e.g. servers, bar backs, food runners) and placed nearly 70% of those trainees in local restaurants (including Colors) within 90 days. These low to moderate income residents have been mostly women and people of color. It is important to note that “returning citizens” and people receiving public assistance have been significantly represented in these training numbers. The community at large benefits from our job creation and job placement efforts as these dollars add to the city’s tax base. Colors Detroit has been the recipient of several local and national awards for its workforce development efforts and was the only restaurant nominated for the Detroit Metro Convention Bureau’s 2015 William H. McLaughlin Hospitality Award for Service Excellence. Food bloggers have identified Colors Detroit as one of the Top Ten Restaurants to Visit in Detroit and we were recently featured in the Metro Times and in an article appearing on the Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers website. We are proud to be a part of Restaurant Opportunities Centers United’s Diners Guide App and the newly developed TopServer Game App. Colors Detroit employs three full time staff members, two part-time staff, and 20 on call front -of-the house staff.

Howard Crane was one of the most prolific and imaginative theatre architects of the early 20th century. He designed over 250 theatres nationwide, 50 of which were originally located in Detroit. Crane brought unequivocal style and richness to his eclectic portfolio of showplace designs that brought Detroit some of the nation’s most inspiring and indispensable architecture. When Bedrock Real Estate acquired m@dison, designed by Crane and originally the Madison Theatre, we were adamant about preserving its historical character. Teaming up with Eurest Culinary, our partnership created Crane’s on Broadway Café located on the building’s first floor. An ode to the late architect, the café is an au courant boutique coffee bar that fuses tradition and accessibility with re-imagined style and warmth. The café is accessible to both tenants and passersby, and features a wide selection of rich, flavorfully brewed coffee and espresso drinks, teas, smoothies and specialty drinks. The café also offers daily selections of artisan wraps, sandwiches and baked goods, as well as other unexpected, mouth-watering treats.
