Steak ‘n Shake was founded in February, 1934 in Normal, Illinois. Gus Belt, Steak ‘n Shake’s founder, pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milk shakes. The Steak 'n Shake name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word “steak” stood for STEAKBURGER. The term “shake” stood for hand-dipped MILK SHAKES. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. To prove his point that his burgers were exceptionally prime, he would wheel in a barrel of steaks (including round, sirloin, and T-bones) and grind the meat into burgers right in front of the guests. Hence arose the origin of our famous slogan, “In Sight It Must Be Right.” After 79 years, we are continuing Steak n Shake’s tradition of serving the country’s best, freshest, and tastiest burgers and shakes.

Welcome to the Treasure Cove Rum Experience – a celebration and exploration of the flavors of rum! We’ve combined our passions for baking and infusing liquors to create Treasure Cove Rum Balls, featuring unique, decadent and fun flavor combinations typically not tasted in your grandma’s rum balls. All of our products will soon be available for purchase through our website and our flavors are constantly changing to take advantage of seasonal ingredients so please make sure to check back often. But if you’d like to taste and experience our collection of rum treasures for yourself, come by and visit us on Saturday mornings at the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market beginning April 18th! Sweet goodness and rum rolled into a ball...is there a better way to kick off a weekend?

Some visitors have commented that our hours seem a bit odd and that sometimes we are closed when they arrive. I'd like to explain so that our visitors understand why that sometimes occurs. Mama Josephine's is all about my mom. The restaurant is a tribute to her; a way of showing my love for her and sharing her wonderful recipes. It is a small place where hospitality is one of the spices we use in every dish. It is a small place though; too small to sustain a decent income for my staff if I were to draw any type of income from it. Because I am a research scientist and have other obligations at times, and occasionally my staff has to be out for some reason, the restaurant is closed during what for us would be normal business hours. We always put a message on the phone, post to FB, and on Nextdoor so that our visitors can be made aware when this occurs. I know it's a pain, but please understand. I want to share my mom's wonderful food and we make every effort to be there if at all possible, but sometimes it just can't happen.
