Washington University Infant Sibling Autism Imaging Study
Distance: 0.1 mi Competitive Analysis

Study Overview This study is a part of Autism Centers of Excellence Network and is a collaborative effort by investigators at Washington University-St. Louis, University of North Carolina, University of Washington, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We are conducting a longitudinal study of infants at high risk for autism (i.e., siblings of those with autism) by studying MRI images of their brain and through behavioral assessments, beginning at 3 months of age. The goal of the study is to increase the understanding of how the brain develops and to look for abnormal patterns of brain growth. We have actually been studying brain development in autism for the past 5 years, and have been awarded funding to continue for 5 more. Why? During the first five years we have learned that abnormal brain and behavior can now be observed at 6 months of age. Some of these changes included differences in attention and motor behavior and abnormal white matter tracts in brain development. These tracts are bundles of neurons or “cables” forming direct, high-speed connections between distant regions of the brain. These findings helped us determine that abnormal brain and behavior patterns clearly show when infants are 6 months of age. Therefore, to understand the developmental emergence of autism, we will now be looking at infants beginning at 3 months of age to understand the course of early development more in depth. Questions? The normal human skull consists of several plates of bone that are separated by sutures. The sutures (fibrous joints) are found between the bony plates in the head. As the infant grows and develops, the sutures close and the bones fuse together, forming a solid piece of bone, called the skull. Craniosynostosis is a condition in which the sutures close too early, causing problems with normal brain and skull growth. Premature closure of the sutures may also cause the pressure inside of the head to increase and the skull or facial bones to change from a normal, symmetrical appearance. St. Louis Children's Hospital is the only children's hospital in the metropolitan area to offer both open and endoscopic correction of craniosynostosis. We have performed the endoscopic approach since 2006 and have done over 150 cases since that time. Craniosynostosis is a condition that is co-treated by plastic surgery (Dr. Albert Woo or Dr. Kamlesh Patel) and neurosurgery (Dr. Matthew Smyth). The Teen Pregnancy Center cares for pregnant and parenting teens, their families, and their babies in a safe and respectful environment. We use groups to support teens and their families during their pregnancy and once they become parents. Our team of health care providers, nurses, social workers, and other staff, as well as parenting teens, helps moms and dads become the best parents they can be to their babies. We have prenatal care and education groups every week, and we offer a Teen Dads support group. We also hold monthly New Moms support groups for families who have had a baby in the past year. Our teens are supported by our staff and Peer Assistants, graduates of the program who come back to group to provide support and "real" advice from a teen mom' s point of view. We talk about everything in group - how mom's body is changing, how to make healthy choices during pregnancy, setting goals for after the baby comes, figuring out how to deal with all the advice people want to give - and so much more! Moms and dads can earn "Baby Bucks" to shop for baby items, and books to begin to read to their babies.

Dr. Williams, having initially moved from Texas to St.Louis to partner with an older physician, had a different vision for providing innovative healthcare. She wanted to be able to integrate the rapidly changing world of technology into her practice to make sure that the young people that she provided healthcare felt connected to their health information in a way that felt meaningful and useful for them. The timing is right for starting this new venture. Working people are choosing their healthcare providers, not simply based on the fact that their parents used them for their care, but because they want someone will provide them with excellent care and improve their quality of life. Delmar Primary Care Associates is a primary care clinic located in the heart of the city on Delmar Blvd. We were opened in the wake of the closing of Connect Care, a multi-specialty hospital and urgent care center. We felt that we could fill the gap for the loss of services felt by the immediate surrounding community and residents when this facility closed. We also are closely located to the Peoples' Clinic, which is less than three blocks away. For those people who want fresh, individual care that do not feel they are getting the care they deserve. Delmar Primary Care Associates is committed to providing efficient, quality care for our patients. For busy, mobile people whose time is already at a premium, but desire a refreshing, high quality service, we will meet their healthcare needs. Whether it is providing annual exams or walk-in visits for the urgently sick and their families. For the elderly client who requires more care, we are thorough, patient and caring. We strive to meet the unique individual needs of all our patients with compassion. We want to be known as the Family Medicine office in town that can get patients in at a moment's notice and always makes sure all our patients needs are being addressed. We want patients to walk away feeling as if other friends and family members should also receive the level of care that they receive at Delmar Primary Care Associates.
