Washington University School of Medicine, located in St. Louis, Missouri, is the medical school of Washington University in St. Louis on the eastern border of Forest Park in St. Louis. Founded in 1891, the School of Medicine has 1,260 students, 604 of which are pursuing a medical degree with or without a combined Doctor of Philosophy or other advanced degree. It also offers doctorate degrees in biomedical research through the Division of Biology and Biological Sciences. The School has developed large physical therapy and occupational therapy programs, as well as the Program in Audiology and Communication Sciences which includes a Doctor of Audiology degree and a Master of Science in Deaf Education degree. There are 1,772 faculty, 1,022 residents, and 765 fellows.The clinical service is provided by Washington University Physicians, a comprehensive medical and surgical practice providing treatment in more than 75 medical specialties. Washington University Physicians are the medical staffs of the two teaching hospitals - Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children's Hospital. Study Overview This study is a part of Autism Centers of Excellence Network and is a collaborative effort by investigators at Washington University-St. Louis, University of North Carolina, University of Washington, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We are conducting a longitudinal study of infants at high risk for autism (i.e., siblings of those with autism) by studying MRI images of their brain and through behavioral assessments, beginning at 3 months of age. The goal of the study is to increase the understanding of how the brain develops and to look for abnormal patterns of brain growth. We have actually been studying brain development in autism for the past 5 years, and have been awarded funding to continue for 5 more. Why? During the first five years we have learned that abnormal brain and behavior can now be observed at 6 months of age. Some of these changes included differences in attention and motor behavior and abnormal white matter tracts in brain development. These tracts are bundles of neurons or “cables” forming direct, high-speed connections between distant regions of the brain. These findings helped us determine that abnormal brain and behavior patterns clearly show when infants are 6 months of age. Therefore, to understand the developmental emergence of autism, we will now be looking at infants beginning at 3 months of age to understand the course of early development more in depth. Questions? The normal human skull consists of several plates of bone that are separated by sutures. The sutures (fibrous joints) are found between the bony plates in the head. As the infant grows and develops, the sutures close and the bones fuse together, forming a solid piece of bone, called the skull. Craniosynostosis is a condition in which the sutures close too early, causing problems with normal brain and skull growth. Premature closure of the sutures may also cause the pressure inside of the head to increase and the skull or facial bones to change from a normal, symmetrical appearance. St. Louis Children's Hospital is the only children's hospital in the metropolitan area to offer both open and endoscopic correction of craniosynostosis. We have performed the endoscopic approach since 2006 and have done over 150 cases since that time. Craniosynostosis is a condition that is co-treated by plastic surgery (Dr. Albert Woo or Dr. Kamlesh Patel) and neurosurgery (Dr. Matthew Smyth). The Teen Pregnancy Center cares for pregnant and parenting teens, their families, and their babies in a safe and respectful environment. We use groups to support teens and their families during their pregnancy and once they become parents. Our team of health care providers, nurses, social workers, and other staff, as well as parenting teens, helps moms and dads become the best parents they can be to their babies. We have prenatal care and education groups every week, and we offer a Teen Dads support group. We also hold monthly New Moms support groups for families who have had a baby in the past year. Our teens are supported by our staff and Peer Assistants, graduates of the program who come back to group to provide support and "real" advice from a teen mom' s point of view. We talk about everything in group - how mom's body is changing, how to make healthy choices during pregnancy, setting goals for after the baby comes, figuring out how to deal with all the advice people want to give - and so much more!
