Pier 70 in San Francisco, California, is a historic pier in San Francisco's Potrero Point neighborhood, home to the Union Iron Works and later to Bethlehem Shipbuilding. It was one of the largest industrial sites in San Francisco during the two World Wars. Today, it is regarded as the best preserved 19th century industrial complex west of the Mississippi.Physical plantThe pier is 65acre in size.HistoryThe area around Pier 70 has been used for shipbuilding since the Gold Rush. Since becoming home to the Union Iron Works in 1883, Pier 70 has been occupied by a variety of industrial concerns, including the Pacific Rolling Mills, Risdon Iron & Locomotive, Kneass Boat Works, Union Iron Works, Bethlehem Shipbuilding, and BAE Systems.After Bethlehem acquired Union Iron Works in 1905, the pier also housed Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation's administrative offices in Building 101.Bethlehem Steel sold their holdings in the area to the Port of SF in 1980.Current state and developmentMost of the pier's buildings have been unoccupied since the decline of shipbuilding in the area. However, some of the pier's historic buildings are currently occupied by BAE Systems Ship Repair and by a number of artist studios. Two dry docks are operated by BAE Systems San Francisco Ship Repair, employing approximately 200 people.The Port of San Francisco currently plans to redevelop the pier for mixed commercial and residential use in partnership with Orton Development, Inc. and Forest City Development. The redevelopment was expected to include roughly a thousand housing units and two million square feet of office space. In 2013, plans included a "Crane Cove Park" that would feature the historic cranes in the northern part of the pier complex.

The Noonan Building Artists is the group of artists currently working at the Noonan Building on Pier 70, in San Francisco. Built in 1941, the Building was originally used for field offices during WW2. It is the only surviving wooden structure remaining in the Pier 70 complex today. For over 40 years, the Noonan Building has served San Francisco as an active artist community. Generations of artists have gathered and worked within these walls, which are currently home to a diverse and vibrant group of artists, designers, and makers of all distinctions.

Scrawl Center for Drawing is about exploration: of the idea of drawing, its immediacy, its accessibility and its tangential meanings outside of itself. It is an exploration of representation; of hybridity and ephemera as well as permanence and solidity. Drawing is not only pencil to paper; it can be as simple as walking across a room. It does however require a sense of embodiment for it is about moving bodies through space or moving bodies in order to define space. Scrawl will be composed as a series of monthly pop-up events that will be held at Giggling Lotus Yoga in the emerging Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco.
ABOUT 2291 3rd St. 2291 3rd St. is an exhibition space presented by Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco. Romer Young Gallery is pleased to present Silent Servant, its third solo exhibition with German painter Christoph Roßner. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Friday September 16th, 6-9pm. "To me, the process of painting is not to be understood as a simple visualization of ideas but as the discovery of the idea itself… Searching for ambiguity is a pivotal concern of mine." - Roßner Roßner's paintings exist in a dreamlike state, in the borderland between abstraction and representation. The arrangement of things, interiors and surrounding environments in his paintings are mostly commonplace, almost banal. The title of the exhibition, Stummer Diener (translates to Silent Servant) comes from the German name for the furniture type that became popular in homes of the expanding middle class during the Biedermeier period. The Stummer Diener - the valet stand - generally sits in the entrance and is used as a repository for personal items: keys, wallets, glasses, papers and the like. Roßner uses our familiarity with these items and spaces as an opportunity to re-frame and re-introduce as strange. In their transformed shape they are newly worthy of depiction. In the process of removing them from their task and function, and abstracting, they become pure painting. Formally, Roßner begins with a basic idea and repeatedly alters an image in a meticulous process of visual discovery, working until he considers it completely finished. Traces of the developmental process – such as overpainting, the insertion of drawings and the smearing of colors – remain deliberately conspicuous, conveying the production process to the viewer. These traces are essential to the work's impact. The process is slow and the paintings reveal their full effect when approached at the same speed, slowly. "My effort is using the means of painting in such a way that I can create an atmosphere of concentrated tranquility, otherworldliness and melancholia." CHRISTOPH ROßNER was born in Zwickau, Germany and currently lives and works in Leipzig. Roßner recently had his first solo museum exhibition at the Leonhardi Museum, Dresden. His work has been exhibited at Halsey McKay Gallery, New York; Galerie Axel Obiger and Kunstraum Bethanien in Berlin, Germany; Galerie Baer, Galerie Zanderkasten and Galerie Treibhaus in Dresden, Germany; Förderverein Aktuelle Kunst and dst.galerie Munster, Germany; Museumstraat 25, Antwerp, Belgium. Bass & Reiner is an exhibition space dedicated to facilitating collaboration between emerging artists and curators. It’s collaboratively directed by Mariel Bayona, Chris Grunder, Cléa Massiani, and Emily Reynolds. Bass & Reiner’s mission is to foster dynamic dialogues between the Bay Area community and create access to other emergent art worlds in order to promote, stimulate and encourage a communal exchange. Our goal is to introduce local artists to a broader audience and bring artwork from elsewhere to The Bay to expand traditional regional boundaries.

PayPal also works! a few of the basics included: a kitchen sink, a full sized fridge with freezer & ice, coffee maker, french press, a single shot espresso maker, electric tea kettle, convection oven, rice cooker, crock pots, juicer, Ninja, glasses, plates, utensils, all the usual stuff and more….see something not listed that you need? ask us if we have it just or bring your own! we provide beverages at our donation based bar, however, we require advance notice to prepare for each occasion, especially if you have particular requests. we host various unique events including but not limited to: dance, performance art, contortion butoh, puppet salons, burlesque acts, shibari suspension workshops, photo group shoots with multiple photographers & models, body paint parties, music videos, indie films, live figure modeling drawing sessions, movie night and so on. we do have a variety of friends in the bay area community of creatives, so inquire if you have interests to outsource a particular type of performance and we will do our best to provide the top quality! we have a handful of paper and fabric backdrops in various colors including but not limited to: white, black, studio gray, green screen, orange, blue, and large multi-toned painterly fabric backdrops. our west facing wall of windows provides days of natural light, especially in the afternoons & perfect for sunset silhouette shots. we have some reflectors to bounce light around as well as blue & red rolls of cellophane to add some bursts of color to the picture. we have a few strobes with small soft boxes, backdrop stands, tripods and a few other light sources around. however, feel free to bring your own photo gear that you are familiar with or would like to test in our space. we plan to have more selection of lighting equipment, including but not limited to: a boom, a large umbrella, a ring light, & a couple of hair lights. our studio is equipped with amenities such as a utility sink in the in-studio bathroom & a vintage (yet fully operational) claw foot bath tub with an over-head shower attachment. we understand people get dirty during many shoots, with paint & powder, mud….ok, well at least we do. we attempt to keep clean towels on hand, though, we cannot completely guarantee it; please do bring your own towels if you think it may be necessary for your shoot. unfortunately, at this time we do not have an in studio washing machine or dryer.
