Stepping onto the Double Decker Bus has a very distinct effect on people. For children, it makes them feel like grown- ups. They get to be the captain of a vessel that only encourages their imagination. For people who are already grown up, it makes them feel like kids. However, regardless of age, the bus ignites something special in every customer who walks through those red doors and the result is always positive. A cozy red bus nestled into a cozy quaint town makes everyone feel at home. The vintage surroundings paired with organic Notorious Coffee Roasting Co’s coffees from all over the world and local desserts made with love is the recipe for one of Asheville’s most beloved staples. This particular 1963 Lodekka model Double Decker bus came from Bristol, England where it performed its intended job as a public transportation vehicle in the 1960’s and 70’s. It wound up in Atlanta, Georgia in the 1970’s, where it not only took its passengers from point A to point B, but also claimed the reputation of a party bus. It finally landed in Asheville at 41 Biltmore Avenue in 1999 and has been a coffee shop ever since. With the Double Decker’s old age, a modest corner in an unparalleled town has become home. With every season, the carefully manicured patio brings an important personality to downtown Asheville. The décor is aged and refined on both decks. Upstairs seating is comfortable and will accommodate at least 25 people. It’s a great place to people watch and take in the view. A beautiful maple tree rooted in the center of the Double Decker’s courtyard blushes orange and red in the fall and allows our soft fluffy snow to rest gently upon its limbs in the winter. As weather permits, we have occasional live performances by local and out of state musicians held in our courtyard or even upstairs in the bus. Sitting at a stone table, enjoying the notably eclectic music buzzing from one of many surround sound speakers is, to locals and tourists alike, a perfect way to spend an afternoon. Top that off with the peaceful sounds of water flowing from our three lovely fountains and your day is complete.

Kathmandu Cafe, named after the capitol city of Nepal, serves traditional Himalayan cuisine with flavors from Nepal, India and Tibet. You will not find a more unique restaurant or cuisine in Ashville. Kathmandu, Nepal is known as “The Wooden City” due to the prevalence of wooden crafts. We have brought much of this character into the restaurant, creating a beautifully warm environment. Using the high altitude herbs and spices, our curries are not only rich in flavor but equally rich in nutrition. We source many of our ingredients directly from the Himalayas for authenticity, but also enjoy using local organic ingredients in our dishes. Some of our most popular dishes include goat or bison curry, navratan korma, vegetable tandoori and tikka sag. Enjoy a full bar with organic wines, beer and specialty cocktails. Join us for our popular lunch buffet or call ahead for takeout. We can cater all size events at affordable prices too! You should not have to sacrifice quality and flavor in order to eat right. This is the motto that we live by here at Laughing Seed. It was the foundation the original menu that Joan and Joe Eckert offered their guests in 1993, and it continues to guide our kitchen today. At Laughing Seed, we believe people should have the freedom to enjoy delicious meals with their family and friends, regardless of their individual dietary preferences or restrictions. For this reason, we indicate right on our menu which of our mouthwatering vegetarian dishes are made with vegan and/or gluten-free ingredients. Our skilled chefs and helpful service team are also always more than happy to do their best to accommodate any other dietary concerns that you may have. Additionally, we know that food choices are much more complicated than they used to be. Issues like GMOs, organic- and locally-grown food, and sustainable agriculture are important to us and to many of our guests. This is why we use only non-GMO oil in our fryers, we incorporate numerous organic ingredients into all of our menu items, and we support local farmers like Roberta and Sacha at Three Graces Dairy and the great folks at Rise Up Rooted Farm. In terms of flavor, the sky's the limit! Global fusion is very much alive at the Laughing Seed. Dine with us, and you can experience the fresh, complex tastes of Thailand, the simple, but intensely satisfying, flavors of the Mediterranean, as well as the vibrant cuisine of South and Central America. Sunflower seed pesto and cashew ricotta form a deliciously satisfying filling for our raw Spinach Pesto Manicotti. Nothing comforts like our classic Harmony Bowl, Tempeh Reuben, or Tico Burrito. With a full bar featuring organic and sustainable wines, locally-brewed beers, and unique, from-scratch cocktails, as well as WNC's "Most Unique Non-Alcoholic" beverage selection, Laughing Seed is a place where anyone and everyone can find a dish or a drink to make their evening. For warm-weather diners, we also offer beautiful, pet-friendly outdoor dining on historic Wall St. Please visit www.laughingseed.com for our full menu.
