The University of North Carolina at Asheville is a co-educational, four year, public liberal arts university. The university is also known as UNC Asheville. Located in Asheville, Buncombe County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina, UNC Asheville is the only designated liberal arts institution in the University of North Carolina system. UNC Asheville is member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. In 2016, The Princeton Review ranked the university number one in its listing of "Best Schools for Making an Impact".HistoryUNC Asheville was founded in 1927 as Buncombe County Junior College, part of the Buncombe County public school system. In 1930 the school merged with the College of the City of Asheville (founded in 1928) to form Biltmore Junior College. In 1934 the college was renamed Biltmore College and placed in the control of a board of trustees. 1936 brought both a further change of name to Asheville-Biltmore College, and control was transferred to the Asheville City Schools.The 20,000-square foot Overlook, or "Seely's Castle", home of Fred Loring Seely, who designed Grove Park Inn, described as "one of Asheville’s most pretentious private residences", became part of Asheville-Biltmore College in 1949. The house, no longer part of the college, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

WHAT DO WE DO? The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville (formerly the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement) is an award-winning, internationally-acclaimed learning community dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, leadership, community service, and research. We opened our doors in 1988 as a department of the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Our goal is to enable our members to “thrive” in life’s second half. OLLI at UNC Asheville(OLLI) embraces an unusually comprehensive array of programs in the arts and humanities, the natural world, civic engagement, wellness, life transition and retirement relocation planning, intergenerational co-learning, and research on trends in the reinvention of retirement. HOW DO WE OPERATE? OLLI is housed in our own building, Reuter Center, on the UNC Asheville campus. Our collaborative member-staff led organization operates as a public-private entity, with two-thirds of our budget derived from endowment income and fees; and one-third from state funding. Approximately 450 members volunteer each year to do everything from teach, serve on committees, run research projects, mentor undergraduates, and provide consulting to other UNC Asheville departments. WHO'S TAKING NOTICE? OLLI's uniqueness has earned it frequent mention in publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, SmartMoney, Business Week, Kiplinger’s, and The Christian Science Monitor, TV's CBS Sunday Morning, and websites such as CNN.com, AOL.com and many others. WHO PARTICIPATES? How large is OLLI’s Boomer population? If we stretch a couple of years beyond the current age threshold of 62, we find that 43% of our more than 1800 annual members are age 64 and under. So we’re nearing half who can claim to have experienced Woodstock or seen Elvis on the Ed Sullivan Show. Balancing out the upstart Boomer generation, we have members of the “greatest” generation represented by 17% age 75 and above. WHAT DO WE STAND FOR? A solid foundation in reading Classical Latin and Greek provides a means of understanding the past and the intellectual roots of the present while formal coursework provides students the opportunity to develop abiding skills of critical thinking, engaged inquiry and reflective expression. As Classics also transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries, this course of study cultivates students who think broadly, synthetically and are able to view issues from a variety of perspectives.

Asheville’s first school for self-directed learners is launching in Fall 2016! Students at Agile Learning Centers individualize their learning within the context of a supportive, enriched environment. We focus on freedom, community, and play, with the guidance of natural rhythms for flowing through our day, as well as agile tools to practice individual intention setting and collaboration. The culture of ZigZag ALC is empowering and dynamic, where kids are trusted to pursue their passions, take risks, and creatively respond to challenges. Our school model grew out of questions like this: - If we want children to grow up independent, why not give them practice in self-direction? If we want them to be motivated, why not let them pursue what interests them? - If we want them to be passionate, why not let them engage in and explore what they love? If we want them to be creative, why not give them the opportunity to design their own education? - If we want them to create a better world, why not let them get started now? Children need a setting to develop their social, cultural and emotional intelligence, motivation, self-knowledge, and sense of purpose. Here’s how this looks like at our school: Self-Direction: Humans are natural learners. When children get to play and follow their passions, they engage deeply, learning more quickly and thoroughly – covering years of content in weeks at the time they choose to learn it. Intentional Culture: At ZigZag ALC, children feel they are heard, they belong, and they make a difference. As social creatures, we thrive in this kind of vibrant community which builds our confidence, heightens our communication skills, and calls forth our best selves. Some campuses have received designation from their state legislatures or public university systems as the state's public liberal arts college or the public honors college for the liberal arts. Others have carved out a less formal but no less visible role as such in their states or province. COPLAC serves both external and internal constituencies. It communicates to state and federal policy makers the vital importance and benefits of providing students with comprehensive public higher education in the liberal arts and sciences. It collaborates with major national higher education organizations like the Association of American Colleges and Universities to advance the aims of liberal learning in a global society. And it partners with the Council on Undergraduate Research to advance student learning through a recognized high impact practice. COPLAC enjoys an organizational and administrative structure that facilitates member collaborations, including multi-campus faculty and student research projects, professional development opportunities for faculty and professional staff, and enhanced information sharing through its interactive web portal. COPLAC has developed regional undergraduate research conferences and a web-based platform for outstanding scholarship at the undergraduate level. Students who enroll at a COPLAC institution are now directly engaged in the wider mission of public liberal arts education, the best preparation for a meaningful life and professional career. The Governing Board of COPLAC consists of the 28 Presidents/Chancellors or their designees. The Board elects a president of the organization for a two-year term and the full board meets on a semi-annual basis. The Board also elects a five-person Executive Committee whose members oversee the administrative work of the Director of COPLAC.
