Avenues: The World School Reviews

259 10th Ave
New York, NY 10001

(212) 524-9000

A New School of Thought Avenues' projected 20 campuses will be a highly-integrated “global learning community,” connected and supported by a common vision, a shared curriculum, collective professional development of faculty, the wonders of modern technology and a talented headquarters team based in New York. If “local” schools are the first step in the evolution of schooling and “national” schools are the second step, the decades ahead are likely to bring the third step: global schools. Thirty years from now there will likely be a number of such organizations. Avenues plans to be the best of this new breed of educational institution—hence its subtitle: The World School.

After working for more than fifteen years as a private tutor, I formed IBID Prep in order to better meet the needs of my students and reach a wider base. Despite the expansion of my services, I continue to form the same highly personalized relationships with students and parents I always have. A number of years ago I was profiled in The New York Times because of the unique way I relate to my students. I try to see them both for the adults they are becoming and the children they sometimes still are. While all my students get the scores they need and want on their SATs, beyond that I am often able to turn my charges into better and more disciplined thinkers. I take very good students and help make them great ones, and I take students who face learning disabilities, attention disorders, test anxieties and chronic underachieving and turn them into confident, motivated and successful students.

Prepare offers comprehensive violence prevention training and personal safety programs. In all our programs, we situate violence in the social and cultural context within which it exists. Along with the broad spectrum of curriculum we offer, we support the work of others in the anti-violence community. Our primary prevention programs work to change beliefs and behaviors before they lead to violence: health and life skills education, anti-bias and anti-bullying programs, and social and emotional learning fundamentals. We are best known for our secondary prevention self-defense and personal safety courses which feature the suited instructor: IMPACT Basics and Prepare classes for kids and teens. Our classes empower individuals to lead their lives fully, with the confidence that they have the tools to better manage what life brings their way.
